I know they're not typical BM band, there's a lot of avantgarde and death elements to it.
I'd argue Antichrist is pretty much entirely prog-death. Whatever though.

When I first saw this name, I thought someone is doing a tribute to Akerfeldt's cock. And then I laughed more than I should have.

To be honest I was listening to their first couple of albums today and even they're more death than black, despite the prevailing perception of them. It's just production, image and a few shrieks here and there which give the black part some credence.
Ok, just realised that was a hella old comment.

So Akercocke are labeled as "split-up" in metal-archives. It was explained in the forums here that David Gray said the band was essentially dead, but there's no official announcement from Mendonça or the band itself stating that.

And then I discovered how awesome Akercocke are, a bit too late I guess.
I listened to Words ... a long time ago but for some reason it didn't click, now I'm listening to Antichrist and enjoying the shit out of it, I'm sure that if I go back to Words ... it's going to be great.

Can anyone recommend me what they think the best album to start off with is for this band? They seem like they might be right down my alley

"Words That Go Unspoken, Deeds That Go Undone" definitely.... Most think it's their best (I'm among them) but it's also because it's very easy to get into but still display everything they have to offer. They don't have a band album tbh so after that one you can go randomly... You might like to check out Antichrist after "Words..." since it expands on that sound.
Just keep in mind that the debut is quite muddy and probably the hardest to get into but not that much.

Will keep all of that in mind, and give 'WTGUDTGU' a few listens. Thanks!

Words that go unspoken... Deeds that go Undone and Antichrist are the bands two best IMO, If you like what you hear with those records get Choronzon because its also very good, just not as good as those two.
Akercocke are a great band Indeed but does anyone know what the situation is with them? they are listed as split up on the metal archives but there has been nothing from the band confirming this, It would be real shame if they have.

One of the metal archive mods contacted David and he said the band was pretty much done for.
