Old thread reached the max, so a new one is on it's way!

@Dream Of Hate: Awh thanks man for letting me open this thread.

I am going to see them live on the 8th of April in Belgium, Antwerp together with Obituary, Napalm Death, Anaal Nathrakh and some others.

I can't wait, hope to hear some Apostasy stuff.

Besides that, I say: Discuss!

You think Nergal took his band, Behemoth, basically his whole life and focus, in a more Death Metal direction so could sell more albums? Have you read anything about the band, or the man? Ever think that maybe his music just evolved naturally, and isn't a product of money? I still believe some musicians out there make the music they want because that's what they like best.

maybe yes, maybe no, everyone has his own opinion, I'm just saying mine here. but please, can you compare songs like Decade of Therion with Prometherion for example and tell me your opinion ? I like the first one more in any way...

Yes, I can enjoy all aspects of Behemoth's career. I love 'Sventevith' and 'Demigod' both! I enjoy all eras of their career for different reasons. I find their early Black Metal very emotional (in the cliche, sappy way) especially with the use of synths and acoustics. PI was really their transition album, where I think they made their "leap." Their next albums, including 'Satanica' were just progressions to where they are now. Yes, 'Satanica' is very catchy, and fun, and I enjoy it, but at times it can be a little stale in the songwriting department. (My personal favorite from the album was "Chant for Echaton 2000.")

As for comparing songs, they're two different eras, and I feel, two very different bands. I believe the Behemoth of today is much more inspired, proficient, and talented, both musically and mentally. I wouldn't really say any aspect of Behemoth's career is more accessible than anything else, not counting their shit production demos. I can see your opinion in liking their earlier Behemoth better, but to say they've become "shit" because they're selling out and changing for the "masses" is just ridiculous.

My favourite album is Satanica and Decade of Therion is my favourite song. I love their black/death metal stuff but now they are playing bullshit, trying to reach the mainstream sound in my opinion. too bad because Nergal was a smart guy. and too much paganism and magic shit are making us tired...

yeah, because "The Apostasy" is such a mainstream and accessible album.

maybe their evolution is a natural one and their rising popularity amongst metalheads, and rising accolades amongst the metal press is due to the fact they have toured like hell and make sure to hit the studio more than once every five years to cut an album...

I never understood the concept of shitting on a band that amazes popularity. I guess some metalheads feel the need to justify why they don't like certain music based on who is listening to it, instead of focusing on the music itself. It's pathetic. I know I sure as hell ain't a metal fan because pop is "accesible crap". I am a metal fan because it's my favorite music.

perhaps you dont know me very well. I dont listen only metal, I also like ebm and trance and guess what, even RAP! its not about the genre. now let me tell you another thing, I am not shitting the band because it amazes populatirity or turned mainstream or whatever, I just find them shit because they are not good enough compared to the old black/death metal stuff that I loved.

Ok. Those are legitimate reasons for disliking them if indeed you don't enjoy their stuff anymore.

ridiculous or not this is my opinion. you can see two different bands but I can see only one, the same one trying to have more fans maybe, their sound evolved indeed but I just don't like them anymore because it's simply death metal. and about mentality, what's the point of searching ancient stuff religions myths or legends etc ? why don't they try to have something that fits in 2008, let's go back to Satanism for example like their old days. and there are more bands than Behemoth you know, I just like their Satanica, Thelema.6 and Zos Kia Cultus albums, nothing more nothing less. end of discussion!

I didn't think their lyrical symbolism had anything to do with it. So, I understand you not liking their later material, I understand that, I could care less. Indeed that is your opinion. But you're trying to say that Nergal and Behemoth are selling out, which is a completely different discussion. I'd like to discuss this with you, if you will. By the way, how do you see that the Behemoth of 'From the Pagan Vastlands' is the Behemoth of 'Demigod?' I can tell a huge difference.

After not listening to Behemoth for a looong time, I recently got back to their older stuff. Sventevith, in particular. And while I fully realize it is but one of the many underground Black Metal albums, I just love it. It is just soo.. bloodchilling, with so much passion and charming lack of skills..

Brilliant album.

I'd say it's because there is a consistency of spirit/attitude that is untouched by stylistic evolution.

I love all Behemoth actually, from "Sventiveth" to "Satanica", to "The Apostasy". Well, love is a strong word, but these albums are highly influential. The Apostasy was a great album and in no way is it just for gaining new fans. The questionable thing is some of the bands they played with like "Job For A Cowboy" and "Beneath the Massacre".

The band has remained great musicians and Nergal, a great lyricist. The only song that was a bit off for me was "Inner Sanctum". Its good, but...ehh, not a song I expected from Behemoth. Just go to darklyrics.com and look the lyrics up, Nergal has still got it. There is a lot of confusion with the ideas of "Satan" these days though. I think Behemoth represents a bit more than any of that, it's chained around their necks (literally).

Besides, even if they do want to make money, what's wrong with getting some well deserved attention and a little more pay after 20 years?!

If they want money, they need to do more than just go from Black Metal to Death Metal, and make an occasional appearance in Kerrang. (or any "mainstream" metal mag, not sure where I saw them in)

WOWWW!!!!! I haven't listened to them in the longest time!
I deserve a kick in the nuts for overlooking the fact that they are the most unique and arguably the best Death Metal band!
I'm killing a few beers right now as I listen, very effective
"The Apostasy" wasn't as good as "Demigod" though.......

but then again,

asking for Behemoth to record something better than "Zos Kia Cultus..." or "Demigod" is asking a HELL OF ALOT!!

These guys got me into Death Metal. I have Demonica, which is good, but not good enough to listen to just anytime. I haven't listened to much else by them, and haven't heard The Apostasy (yet), but I like them. I'll be back once I get Zos Kia Cultus and Demigod.

Anyone like the video for 'At the Left Hand ov God'? Thats pretty kick-ass! One of the best music videos I've seen actually, granted I don't see TOO many, but this one is very cool.

And Behemoth has a HUGE tattoo section on their myspace! Lot of cool ones and some downright crazy crap-autographs?! First, I'm not big on autographs anyways and secondly a tattoo OF an autograph?

About that, I once met a guy at a festival that had a tattoo of a Nattefrost autograph on his wrist. Definitely not my thing, but it was cool in a sense of "hey yea, that's metal, but i'll never do it". He told me he visited a Carpathian Forest show, got Nattefrost to sign his wrist and immediately ran down to a tattoo-shop and got it burnt in forever.

He had a good idea. An autograph collection that never goes out.

About Behemoth - yeah, I like them too. Original, powerful and kinda catchy.
They have many cool songs, but my favorite always has been 23 (The Youth Manifesto). 23 is my number.

Yes (Chant for Ezkaton, Qadosh, Jama Pekel, I'm Not Jesus). I find the songs (save Qadosh) a lot more straight-forward and thrashy than The Apostasy.

It's not so special and in October there's another full length, so I 'd better downloaded it.

Behemoth is one of my favorite bands; they may be an "accessible" band, but their stuff is of high-quality regardless.

I prefer their DM era (Zos Kia Cultus, and moreso Demigod being my favorites), but I enjoy their BM stuff quite a bit as well. Really solid stuff either way.

I haven't kept up with them though lately, sadly; I still need to get the live album and the Ezkaton EP.
