Seeing as 10,000 Days was just released (and I'm a new tool fan, myself) it would be interesting to see what people think. Myself? I think it's a masterpiece. I don't think any of their albums are weak anywhere and this one carries on an already impressive discography. But otherwise, the band itself? Interesting music, unique, and the music videos are fascinating.

I am not really into Tool, but they are touring and coming here to SF, so I decided to buy a ticket and check the band out. Tickets went on Sale last Sunday for $60 at 10:00AM, I went to find tickets 10:03 and it was sold out! and the worst part is they went re-selling them on ebay for prices that reached $500! and people were actually paying this price! I think it's ridiculous!

Well, some people would give anything to see Tool live... Although I'd never pay 500 fr a 60 USD ticket, but tgere are some pople who would, It's Tool after all, they worth every penny, 'cause no badn sounds like 'em.

I paid 40? to see them live in December 2006, and I can tell I won't ever pay any price to see them again. That must have been the most boring show I've ever attended. I mean, ok it's Tool, they have a special sound, but what's the point if there's nothing going on on stage? I don't pay to see a band bored to death and not giving an actual tiny shit about the current concert. Or the audience. Or anything worth it except Keenan's outfit.
I mean, come on, I know fans are blind, but there are so many bands that are much better live than Tool. Tool is definitely not worth so much money.

Well, I've seen some live videos and they don't seem all that special live, just the four of them playing on teh stage, and Maynard with his weird clothing/body painting. But there are sicks fans dude, really sick... 500 USD... pfft.

Yeah, that's far too much. I mean, come on, I wouldn't even pay that kind of money if Kurt Cobain was resurrected and Nirvana gave one last show, or if John Lennon came back to life and played with the Beatles again, or if Johnny Cash stopped being dead

Plus, two of my friends are real die-hard fans of Tool - damn, they're almost groupies - and they told me the band sucked live every time they saw them (and that must be six or seven times each).

Well, I'm a die-hard fan as well, but I live in a shitty cou try where bands don't come. But, listening to their albums, I wouldn't imagine like a big super show with fireworks or studff like that, seriously. just by listening to the music one can say that they must be kinda boring live, except for the ilumination and the set art, for what I've seen on videos and pics.

Tool live is a very anticlimactic experience. You get sucked into the depths of their albums and hear that they are coming around so you decide to buy tickets (if you can) Months before the show you prepare yourself spiritually to experience those other-dimensional beings who have created these dark, divine works of art.
Then you get to the parking lot. Douchebags. Everywhere. More Greek letters than an original copy of the Iliad. Finally after you crawl your way through the booze-breath gauntlet and get settled for the show, you keep telling yourself it will all be worth it. Then the band appears. Screams of teenage girls echo "Maaynard! Oh my gawd its him!" You start to recognize the sounds of "Jambi" and before you know it you are waist-deep in Tool. But it may be hard to forget that you are also waist-deep in tools. "Swing on the spiral, man! Yeah! F'in Tooooool Dude!"

I saw them twice and enjoyed the shows, but I had much higher expectations than what was delivered.
Not to mention that they played almost identical setlists.

How much did you pay for your ticket? We were having a little friendly discussion about the prize of the tickets for Tool, and how "poor" it was teh show visually. Could you tell us about it?

I saw them on the roskilde festival, so there we pay 1500 norwegian kroners , or ca. 230 dollars for the festival ticket. and then you can see all the conserts for free the whole week, so i can't answer your question, but in norway if tool would play it never cost more then 500 norwegian kroners for a consert thats ca 70 dollars! i guess 60-65 dollars would be the prise for a tool consert!
And their show i on the roskilde festival i saw was amaizing musicaly and visualy!

I dunno, people are crazy. Over here, in order to get a Tool ticket, you have to wake up at 6 AM on the day tickets are sold, stand in line for about an hour at some random ass store that you would never expect to sell tickets, and then, if you're lucky, half of the people in line will get a ticket for less than $100. I've never heard of a band that sells tickets faster than Tool, over here in Seattle at least.

Spite their "weirdness", Tool is a comercial success.
But still, it's less than $100.
Have you ever seen Tool live, pyro?

Oddly enough, they're big, but not popular to the masses. My friends a big fan, and I've heard many times they're great live, I'll see them one day. But ticket prices sometimes get too ridiculous.

Funny... I don't know how it was in Paris, but here in Lyon I had no problem buying my ticket for 40? one week before the show. And the venue was about 3/4 full, not more. But anyway, I wouldn't have expected them to have that kind of fame everywhere else, since they really do suck live
18 months later, I'm still traumatized by the level of intense boredom I reached during their show.

i'd have a hard time swallowing a $70-100 hit for a show.

i spent $70 to catch High on Fire earlier this year - but for that $70, I got to stand close enough that Matt Pike nearly clubbed me with the stock of his guitar, scored three cd's, a High on Fire t-shirt, and about, oh 5-6 or more beers (plus tip).

maybe it's the old punk rock fan in me, but $70 to see a band is way steep. never mind arena rock prices for merchandise.

(although I would pay $70 to see zombie Johnny Cash perform a set from beyond the grave.)

$30 USD, Idaho Center, Mid-Sized Venue, Arena Seats...probably row 17 or 18, but pretty much right above the stage. Nice side view of the band.

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. Because they were phenominal live. They had these huge screens on both sides of the stage showing all kinds of trippy images depending on the song, similar to a Primus concert. They also had a lot of lights in weird, dim colors going back in forth over the crowd.

Pretty unique experiance for me. Of course this was on their Lateralus tour. Maybe they've scaled the live show back a bit since then.
