Dream Theater - To Work On New Album In 2018

After recently completing their European Images And Words 25th anniversary tour, prog giants Dream Theater are already thinking about their next album. In fact, vocalist James LaBrie revealed in a recent interview that they will work on their next album in 2018 to follow The Astonishing. James LaBrie is also preparing a new solo album that should be ready in late 2017.

When asked about the writing process for the new Dream Theater album, James said: "We're just planting seeds for now. We're just putting some stuff together but it's pretty cool what's happening. The real nuts and bolts aren't gonna happen until we're done touring. Then we will go to a studio and be together every day just to write songs. But we have a lot of ideas already."

"But for now, we do this tour for the rest of 2017 and in 2018 we're gonna make a new album. And we're pretty psyched because we're already know what we're gonna do. But I'm not gonna tell you. (laughs) It's really important for us that the new album will be our best effort. It should be who we are at that particular moment. We still want to create something that's better than what we did before. That's what keeps you interested in what you do. But if along the way we feel that there is another album we should recognize once again, then we'll do it."

I sure hope it won't be as needlessly stretch out as The Astonishing was.

Yeah I agree, concept albums can be great but The Astonishing was far too stretched out and mellow for my taste. Still excited to see what they will come up with next.

Exactly. There was some really good music on this album which would make a solid 1CD release.

If only there was someone to ground them and convince them that not all their ideas are pure gold.

I have the opposite worry, after the melodic and tasty (no top glued Rudess wankery everywhere) Astonishing, I'm worrying they'll go back to the chunky boring S/T and ADTOE sound...

This band hasn't been as good since Portnoy left. You can tell that he was a major part of their songwriting which Mangini just doesn't have.

Normally I'd be inclined to agree with these sort of sentiments, but my issue with Astonishing was that it was melodic, but not *catchy.* In other words - yes, the music was pretty melodic, but the melodies were not particularly memorable or enjoyable. I thought their previous album was much better.

Agreed with BloodTears and that Oracles guy, Mangini sucks balls when it comes to songwriting despite being a mountain of technical wizardry and skills.

How do you know he sucks balls when it comes to songwriting when he hasn't written anything for the band so far?

That's how

Ehh... No.

It's not that Mangini is a bad songwriter, it's that Petrucci and Rudess seem to refuse to let anyone else contribute to the songwriting.

They've always been cheesy. At least, during the parts that La Brie sings.

But their music on the last few albums is bland - or at the very least the albums productions have been very bland. It's all just a boring sameness. I hope for something more dynamic sounding.

Bah! I just wait they do the music they feel to do. Otherwise wouldn't be something sincere from them.

I like every release from them and I hope they won't disappoint me in the next one

Their new album is on my list but I still haven't had time to listen to it. Is it on par with their other albums? Voyager are very consistent with their sound while still being experimental.

Yes it is, you're going to love it. This album has a lot of offbeat signatures mixed in with melodic and groove metal parts.
