It has now been about four months since the legendary Deathspell Omega dropped their newest full length album. Having had a good time for digesting both the album itself as well as overall reception to it, allow me to offer my thoughts.

Need me some tankie bm

I recall this from a few years back, though I don't think they're really promoting communism or anything, more so just writing about the Russian Revolution, so not sure if "tankie black metal" is a fitting label.

Oh yeah, I remember that, but im pretty sure that's not really tankie bm, the same way that an album about the holocaust is not necessarily NSBM

Great album btw

After first listen, it's decent. Production is stellar, especially the audible bass, and vocal delivery is top notch. It's not especially memorable though. Songs have interesting moments, but it still relies on that frenetic, DsO-copyrighted dissonant picking and blasting combo that isn't very song-oriented. Needs a couple more goes.

Guess they acknowledged the leak:

More or less how I'm feeling about it as well. They get bonus points for going at the Yo Mama joke angle with that 4th track title though

They want to be serious, but we all know this is really them behind the scenes.

After ending my brutish, hardhitting brand of Eurasian death metal. I will sink my teeth into this.
I'm gonna do my best to turn Splinters From Your Mother's Spine into a yo mama joke in a real life setting.

Almost finishing it and I gotta say the best things are the vocals, drums (as usual) and the fucking production, man. The last one is the icing on the cake for me.
I like that it's far less dense and gives more room to appreciate the songwriting than The Synarchy Of Molten Bones which I liked but it was far too compressed.

I dig it. Probably the best thing they've done since Paracletus, possibly the best thing they've done since Fas (not counting one-track albums.)

Giving this another play through right now and enjoying it a lot more than my first listen. It's definitely better than Synarchy, particularly in the slower moments where the bass really comes through and things get more midtempo and the composition just overall has more room to breathe. I certainly wouldn't mind if these guys ever did a full album of material more in the vein of the 8th or 11th tracks here.

Gave this album another spin today but couldnt finnish it, dont like their sound anymore and those gimmick lyrics is so bad - the idea of the palingenesis, the theme of this album, is laughable.

Okay, but just a couple of hours ago this album was still second to none in your list.

What on earth happened that you had to revise your opinion so drastically?
Did you by any chance rediscover your secret love for Swallow The Sun, Amorphis and power metal?

I can't imagine a few inaudible lyrics changing my opinion of actual music so drastically.

The lyrics are at their bc and its the first time theyve spelled them for you.

They're still basically inaudible though. Just funny that bad lyrics can modify the music from being "some of the best black metal" to "repeating themselves."

Just a change of opinion, this album didnt last long. With most albums I go back and listen again after a couple of months but probably wont happen with this, as those lyrics makes it kind of hard, they are there regardless of whatever. It will be fun to read your praises of the music only though

This is 7 album for me, so probably won't get too much more attention bar the odd listen every year or so *kiss*

Absolutely. Easily best song on the album.
Rest of the album is also quite fantastic, I think this might be one of their strongest releases.

Apart 1523, Ad Arma and You Cannot Even Find The Ruins really stand out. Wish all 3 were longer. Love the subtle use of orchestration.
I think it's time for a full slow-paced DsO album, with those wonderful melancholic melodies and top vocal performance.

This is Paracletus but better. I was afraid we were going to be greeted with another dud but they pulled through, propper DsO is unlike any other DsO-clone. Great album.

I haven't made an opinion on the album yet but duuuude, that riff at the last section of "Splinters From Your Mother's Spine". And then "1523", that's some Apokastasis Panton level shit.

I like the part on how the band operates, that collective-circles and how they may be opposed in thought but "manage a dialogue" through art.
It's always interesting to have further lyric insight, the band reaaaally goes deep in that aspect. Seems to almost precede the music, as it's all layed out and essential even if it doesn't end up in its complementary audio format.

Most of those morons would stop listening to a band just because its fanbase is "toxic", that's how ridiculous they are. The interview is great, it's cool to see they didn't discard the idea to play live at all.

If they want to stop listening, more power to them. Be picky. But the ones that go on these narcissistic word crusades deriding shit they know nothing about or they read the first paragraph of something they find objectionable and condemn it completely and have to post about it ad nauseam are the ones I despise. And it seems anything worth liking these days has a "toxic" fan base associated with it.
