This album smells like disappointment. #makeopethgrowlagain

Judging by SOME performances available on Youtube, Mikael's growls are pretty much awful and weak now. I wonder if anyone can confirm this who has seen Opeth live in recent years.

I've seen them two years ago and I'll see them again this year. They were alright, but definitely not that great.

Saw them two weeks ago. General performance of the band was decent, however, regarding the Mikael's growls...not awful, weakened yes (more or less).

I'm pretty sure there will be no growls on the new album.

Me too. I was just wondering if - to a degree - it is a question of they can't rather than they won't.

I'm pretty sure Akerfeldt could growl as well as he used to if he decided to use some growls on the new album. It's just a matter of practice.

My problem is with the new sound.. When they play the prog rock songs with the classic opeth metal tone in lives it sounds amazing. I have no issue with the style, just make the production more metal. They do it anyways in their live shows

One of the songs has "Slut" in its title. Does Opeth is sexist??

I like the fact that they're doing a Swedish version. Hopefully there will be at least one song on the album good enough to revisit both versions a couple of times.

"allting tar slut" = "everything ends" "Slut" means finished or over, etc.

"Ölen är slut" for comparison means "We're out of beer"

If you grab King Diamond's Abigail and Them album covers and put them into a mixer, you almost received the same result that you can see on the new Opeth's album cover

I saw that, too. Åkerfeldt did say that King Diamond's Them was a huge influence on him and one of his favorite metal albums. Seems like there may be a narrative to the songs as well. Could be they are doing another concept album, but letting it come out more weird.

I was hugely disappointed with Heritage, PC didn't made much for me but Sorceress was pretty good in its style if you ask me. I don't have any problem with them playing prog (though still much prefer their more metal side), my problem has more to do with the inspiration and the feeling the songs transmit to me.

That said, not sure what to expect, regarding both to quality and to musical style. Still have some hopes it could be good.

That's the source of the metaphor. In Cauda Venenum is a poetic technique in which the final lines of a work destroy the expectations set up by the earlier ones. The term comes from the Roman poet, Martial.

Yeah, but poison in the tail is subverting expectations at the very end, not constant disappointment for three seasons.

I'd say that seasons 6 and 7 were not that terrible. Not too good, but not terrible either.

Well compared to the trainwreck of season 8, sure, not terrible. But remembering everything Dorne or Braavos related... ugh

Season 8 is like: "fuck off show"

Since Opeth's discography is partitioned in cycles, after three releases in their Deep Purple cycle, this should be the transitional record towards the next one. It has to fill the shoes of Still Life and Watershed. I still have all my money on the next cycle being more interesting than the current one. Otherwise there's not much here for me anymore.

I don't necessarily agree with you on the cycles thing, but other than that you're spot on. In my opinion the first truly great Opeth album was Still life, number 4. So, now it's time for another great number 4.
On second thought, Pale Communion is excellent, and it was only numer 2... Go figure

Classic examples of In Cauda Venenum in the Opeth discography - the abrupt ending of Closure; the detuned guitar at the end of Burden.

I am a bit concerned this will be the Game of Thrones Season 8 for Opeth where every bit leaves you longing for something more and a bit. That feeling started with Swedish songs, which makes me wonder if the whole album will be in Swedish. Ends with how the music feels, so I'll come back to this lol..
