I was not sure whether to put this thread in the Melodic Metal or in the General Music thread. I decided to put it there since the band is on Metal Storm. Feel free to move it if need be.

I personally love that band and wanted to see what people thought of them. In my opinion, Steve Wilson is a genius. As of right now, I particularely love Shesmovedon, Lazarus and The Sound of Muzak.

What is the best Porcupine Tree album, in all of your opinions? I was going to make a thread in the arena, but I figured asking the question here would give me more responses. Right now (and it could change), my opinion is:

1. Deadwing
2. Lightbulb Sun
3. Fear of a Blank Planet
4. In Absentia
the others are so close I can't rate them atm

If I were to actually sit down and try and rate bands to make a list of my top 5 or top 10. Porcupine Tree would definitely make the cut. From their early days, when it was a one man band with just the genius, Steven Wilson, to what it has become now. Going from being almost like a copy-cat Pink Floyd, with some definite differences, which made them almost a copy-cat, to their evolution into their own band. I can safely say, they are a band full of musicians with very little outside influence, giving them an amazing and unique sound.

I was introduced to Porcupine Tree in 2005. Since then, I have spent a lot of time tracking down all of their albums. Some of their early stuff was quite a challenge. But, now that I have listened to all of their studio albums and their E.P.'s I can safely say they are one of the most impressive groups I've ever come across.

And I agree with the comment I read earlier saying they are the forefront of Progressive Rock. But, what sets them apart from most progressive rock or metal bands, is that I have yet to meet anyone part of my generation who cannot get into at least one of their albums.

Only my opinion, of course. I am a big fan, though, to say the least.

And my top 5 albums by Porcupine Tree are:

1) Fear of a Blank Planet
2) Lightbulb Sun
3) Deadwing
4) The Sky Moves Sideways
5) Coma Divine (A live album, but I think it should count. It's amazing!)

I thought that when I first listened to it, but tbh it grows on you, and it grew more when I saw them live playing the first part of The Incident. Maybe it isn't as good as FOABP(which I think it's one of their best albums ever), but I find it enjoyable.

That's the main problem, it's just enjoyable, nothing else, nothing less. I also don't think Fear Of A Blank Planet it's one of their best. To be honest, those two after many listens have never grown on me and I don't think they will.

Well, Porcupine Tree has many good albums, and there are 3 or 4 than can be easily picked by anyone as their favorite without generate responses. In my opinion:

1) Fear Of A Blank Planet (By Far)
2) Deadwing
3) In Absentia
4) Lightbulb Sun
5) Stupid Dream (i enjoy this album a lot, songs like Don't Hate Me, Pure Narcotic and Stop Swimming makes me put it ahead of:)
6) Signify
The Other are so close i cannot decide, and, by the way, i also think The Incident didn't fulfill my expectatives

Their early albums tend to be more focused on ambient and psychedelic elements. By the time they got around to their 4th album 'Signify' they had started to incorporate 'heavier' metal elements into their music, though that one is still very ambient oriented.

I would suggest the best place for any metal fan to start is probably after this psychedelic/ambient oriented era, the first major departure from this is 'Stupid Dream'.
Although if you like prog rock more than metal, probably best to start with albums like 'Up The Downstair'.

No worries, personally I enjoyed all PT's albums to some degree, so to me at least you couldn't go wrong with any album. While not my favourite their first album has alot of quirky yet catchy tracks.

I started with the Deadwing album when it came out. Loved it, particularly some killer songs on it, like "Shallow." But after that I really got into "The Sky Moves Sideways" (the expanded version of it), the tripping "Voyage 34 - The Complete Trip" and "Transmission IV" which is basically a 40 minute improvisation. But, I'd say all the rest is equally awesome stuff.

I.

Interesting. "Deadwing" was also my first PT record I think. Then it was "In Absentia" and "Lightbulb Sun" and "Stupid Dream". It was only after that I started to go back, especially with "Signify" and "On The Sunday Of Life". Then "Fear Of A Blank Planet" came out and I went to the present again. Then I came back to all of their past albums. From that era, I especially love "Up The Downstair" and "The Sky Moves Sideways". Then they released "The Incident" and I've been going back and forth ever since. But no matter what album you listen to, there are still traits that you find in all of them. But "Signify" and "In Absentia" were some of the turning points. From IA to FOABP they were getting increasingly heavier. And "The Incident" is a bit of a mix between their different facets if you will. That's how I see it anyway.

Took me a while to buy all of these but eventually I did. Also, Steven said in a recent interview that we can expect another album in 2012.
