I can't believe nobody has started a Megadeth thread yet. Not only are they a well-known thrash band, but there's always been so much controversy around them because of the Mustaine-haters.

Have fun discussing.

Listened to Rust in Peace Live + Skin O' my Teeth and In my Darkest Hour in some crappy quality, and I was impressed by Dave Mustaine's singing; great performance. Also another good thing is that bass in audible in the mix. Chris Broderick didn't sound that good though.

On CD and especially on DVD I am pretty sure the whole thing will sound pretty sweet.

It's likely been posted somewhere previously in the thread, and one way or another, I don't care, but it seems a tad odd having Megadeth in the extreme forum. It's thrash and all and thrash is extreme, but more in the way that Demolition Hammer or Sodom do it. Coroner too, even though they certainly didn't opt to go the aggressive route, and instead got more "progressive" with each release. Seems to me that I personally base the extremity of thrash based upon the vocals, and the vocals to a certain extent can dictate what the music will be like in thrash, cause obviously the music of Megadeth and Coroner isn't that far apart, the vocals are different, and Coroner write better songs and didn't become shit like Megadeth (Grin is an awesome album).

Thrash is classed as an extreme genre. And seeing as Megadeth are a thrash band, that's why they are in the extreme metal section. Any band that predeominantly plays (or played) thrash, are placed in the extreme metal section.

Anyone heard the remastered/remixed versions of the old albums?

I heard the remastered/remixed version of "So Far..." today.
What the fuck is this shit, really? No distortion, no edge, no sharpness, nothing.
What's the deal? Polishing the sound so much the cute little family will be able to all sit quietly in their living room and enjoy it? Have we reached the point at which we have nice couples with 5-10 year-old offspring in mind when producing a metal album?
Jesus Christ! Even vocals have been pussified to the point they sound pathetic. Sorry for the rant but what I heard fucking sucks with capital letters. It is so toned down and pussified compared to the original that if someone never heard the original, he/she will have a completely false idea of the album.

I know we still can find good metal bands today but it is an emergency for many old bands to pack their things and leave before they destroy everything they built long ago. They're only doing shit after shit after shit... after shit. And I really start to hate them for that. Learn to leave when it is time and you still have some dignity left, for Christ's sake.

Will all metal albums suffer this dreadful fate in the future? My god, if it continues like that, we won't be able to find any good metal a few years from now. Not even old ones.
Change the package, add crappy bonuses, a new cover or whatever, I don't mind. But don't desecrate the sound, fucking morons. If people can't enjoy the album with its real sound, they just have to look elsewhere. There is more than enough metal for pussies nowadays without having to destroy and desecrate old albums that were good in their original version.

I have the remasters... And they sound fine... Then again I haven't heard the originals.

Megadeth and Overkill are constantly changing as to which one is my favorite band. Symphony of Destruction was the first metal song I heard where I though "Whoa, this is awesome", although now I find the song to be overrated.

Megadeth's an amazing band. Strongest in the Big Four, in my opinion. But I haven't been as impressed with their newer stuff as I was with their old stuff, like SFSGSW, or Rust In Peace. Granted, it's better than Risk, but not amazing.

Just thought of something. Was Megadeth so named because it would be ahead of Metallica alphabetically ,and thus ahead in the music shops?

Trust me, I own the remaster and the original of Rust in Peace, and the original is FAR superior. And I mean, BEYOND superior. They fucked up really hard with the remaster. I didn't think it was a big deal either until I did some research and found this video:

Now, if you think that volume means clarity, there's a problem there. Turn the volume up for the originals, and back down for the remasters, and you'll hear the difference. Even without turning up the volume, you can hear how shitty they made the vocal sections. It's especially noticeable with the comparison of the vocals for "He who lives by the sword (he who lives by the sword) - Will surely also die (will surely also die)". Pay extra attention to the background voice that says the parts in parentheses.

Now, as for that other guy's rant on all old bands' stuff being destroyed, you CAN remaster stuff without ruining it. Take Morbid Angel's Altars of Madness, for example. I've seen comparisons of the original's and remaster's soundwaves, and there seems to be very minimal limiting or clipping. The sound is just made slightly clearly and louder without messing with the original too much. I've even asked people who own the original and the remaster, and I've been told that it sounds pretty much the same. It is possible to not fuck something up, you just gotta have people who know what they're doing and aren't just trying to make something as loud as possible with all edges polished off. Sadly, this wasn't the case with the Megadeth remasters.
