The idea is simple... Talk about the languages you speak, and the ones you would like to learn. What are they? Why do you like them? What is that you don't like about them? How and where did you learn them? What is your mother language?

Personally...

- (As you *might* have noticed) I speak English. Not really well, but I think I can say I know the basis. But it is not my first language: French is. I don't want to sound pretentious or anything, but I speak French really well. Yet, it is the third language I learnt.
- My mother language is Arabic, it was the first one I learnt as I am Moroccan and was born in Morocco. But my parents speak French more than Arabic, and I started going to a French school when I was 5, thus, I started forgetting Arabic. I was still as able to understand it as before, but I couldn't speak it anymore, past my 8th birthday. (Some other important factors were involded, but it is not necessary to mention them.)
- The second language I learnt was Spanish, because of/thanks to Spanish TV channels and my grandmother, who only spoke Spanish and Arabic. But when we left the city where we were living (Tanger, just in front of Spain), I stopped watching Spanish channels, and left my grandmother as well, and then, forgot Spanish too .
- That's when French comes. It became my first language around 8. As the French school system wants it, I started learning English at 11. And I unexpectedly didn't have any difficulty with it. I have always had the best mark in that subject, without making any effort for that. Unfortunately it is still not enough. I realised my level was not as good as I thought it was.
- The next year, (I was 12) I chose Latin, but I had to stop after a few months, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to start Spanish the following year. I started re-learning Spanish at 13.
- But since I took Spanish at 13, I couldn't take German at 15. I had too many subjects and the teachers wouldn't let me add German. Yet it is the language I really want to learn. I like the sonority of it, and I watch German TV channels just to hear it, even if I don't get a word of it .
- As a consequence, the two languages I can speak the best are French, and English.

As you see the topic is vast, there is a lot to say...

You forget that Singapore also uses Latin alphabet

But then again that is cheating since the official language of Singapore is first English, then Bahasa Malay anf then whatever

from Singapore every once in a while at the airport but so far all of them have been Han Chinese. I'v heard there's a significant community of Han Chinese not only there but also in Malaysia.

The Han Chinese, could be Englishly called Sino are majority ethnic in China, other's significant is Manchu whose last feudalistic ruling ending in 20th century. They now dwelling in the north china. It definitely Han Chinese nowadays everywhere when China has grown more. I just not quite sure if the official main language of China called: either Mandarin Chinese or some I heard "Beijing Chinese". If Mandarin Chinese belonged to people from Canto region of China then official language spoken is some accent in Beijing. Due to it having different accent though writing same. Other West side of China having more ethnics and yes Tibet, but I guess not quite considered much "Chinesely" that related to China, you know China is still authoritarian dictator, only some considered important to the country, not all. It really interesting if I were Chinese, because I really would want to feel how China having dominated culture from Beijing in mainland to share the same blood racial with people down in south, southeast asia Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia... Those oversea countries, it's Chinese people having lived for up to 2 centuries or more mixing with Indian race and native...

only now do I see this question.

It is clear that you don't know what the official/local language of SIngapore is, or else you wouldn't have asked this. Since we write on MS foprums in the official/local language of Singapore.

I believe you...

Yep, it's not hard to understand if you listen closely... just like you can understand Spanish when you already know some other Romance language...
Recently met a Swiss girl whose first language is Romansh... it's completely possible to dig what she's saying by paying a bit more attention... it's a cool language... sounds like Portuguese/Romanian... then again, any Romance language that isn't Spanish/French/Italian sounds like Portuguese/Romanian to me...

The bloke in the video you posted is actually speaking Scots... technically, it's not Scottish English... It has developed from English with some regional influences but nowadays it's already a language of it's own... As is Italian which is not the same as Latin although it developed from it...

I wanna learn Tagalog but haven't had much time to get really into it. Thus far, I've only looked at a few online resources which seem to be directed at tourists who just wanna learn basic phrases or English speaking guys who wanna impress Filipinas with their limited knowledge of the language. I'll get more serious with it over summer. I might actually be going to the Philippines in a few months :O

One of my good friends is a French speaking Belgian. She seconds this notion that the Flemings speak French as a second language, yet the Walloons speak only French (and English when they must). I don't really know why that is.

My native language is English, as I was born in the United States to English-speaking parents. I've been speaking/reading/writing German intermediately since I was in high school.

A teacher from Belgium once paid a visit at our university and spoke about the language issue in the country. What I understood was that the two main communities, the Walloons and the Flemish are pretty different in the fact that the Walloons have mostly given up on their original language and completely embrace the French media and French standard language while the Flemish still prefer their own language to the Dutch. Therefore, when the Flemish learn French to communicate with the Walloons they do not like the latter speak Dutch to them and will subsequently go over to French. That leaves Flemish in a poorer position between the two hard rocks of Dutch and French which are both the official languages of instruction. The French-speakers don't really get to use Dutch at all... plus... it's the sad truth that the ones with a back-up from a bigger nation speaking their language won't be very likely to use a language with a lesser number of speakers.

Many Russian-speakers in Estonia don't know any Estonian at all... I believe it's the same for Latvia where around 50% of the population speak Russian. Those who are a tad bit more open-minded and more educated surely know both local languages plus one or two international languages... but you always meet those who can't utter a word in any language other than their mother tongue to save their life... and they tend to act all arrogant when you speak to them in any language that isn't their native tongue... I've understood that some of them may know something... they just like to act like douches by refusing to speak in other languages because their own is "SO AWESOME"...

Go for it. Italian is fairly easy... majority of words are the same as in English and the pronunciation and spelling are so easy that it makes English seem like Chinese... That's probably why Italians are so bad at learning foreign languages... nearly every language is harder than theirs...
