It's a rock subgenre, not metal.

I love stoner Metal, specially some BORIS albums and also the doom/stoner material of CATHEDRAL... I like this heavy music with bass sound, crunchy slow rhythm always revolving your stomach... good shit.

Ah...Stoner Metal is a genre I really really like. I'm still exploring it, but I think the best album I have come across in this genre is the awesome Dopethrone by Electric Wizard.
Well Stoner Metal/Stoner Doom/Stoom is generally music you're supposed to listen to when you're stoned or getting stoned Actually, it's a genre which has guitars having heavy distortion (hence people refer to it as the heavy-est genre), lots of minimalistic yet innovative drumming, heavy bass and mellowed out vocals. This is how I can best describe the genre. There's something in it that I'm yet to get tired off
Other bands I enjoy: Reverend Bizarre, Sleep, Orange Goblin, High On Fire, Mindfunk, Kyuss, Bongzilla, Sheavy, Cathedral, Boris (as mentioned by Southern Wind), Spiritual Beggars (involving Carcass' Michael Amott), and Church Of Misery.

I have recently started listening to stoner metal (stoner doom to be more accurate). First of all i would mention Spirit Caravan - interesting similarity with Black Sabbaths earlier creation. Then there is also Goatsnake that I really like - its more heavier than the last one and certainly more complex in my opinion. As I only started listening to stoner metal very recently I dont know many bands. But there are bands I would recomend, besides the ones I have already mentioned - Electric Wizard, Melvins, Drunk Horse, Electric Funeral.

Why are u relationating doom and stoner? Doom has nothing to do with stoner!! Stoner comes from grunge with slow bass and guitars!! I still don't know why in this web appears Kyuss and Q.O.T.S.A as metal! Is stoner rock or even stoner hard rock but not metal for god shake!! =) Stoner IMO is the evolution of grunge

Stoner metal is definetly a sub-genre of rock...as far as stoner having nothing to do with doom, OF COURSE IT DOES! I mean, why do you think that Kyuss, one of the pioneers of stoner rock/metal, make constant nods to Black Sabbath and even covered them...

So if you cover Black Sabbath songs, your music has something to do with doom? That's a strange argument.

Stoner definately has a lot to do with Doom metal. The slow crunching riffs frombands such as EW and Bongzilla definately make them to qualify as Doom Metal let alone Metal.
Also another difference between Stoner Rock/Metal (like Bible Of The Devil) and Stoner doom (bands like EW) is the fact about the vocals. They are quite distorted in the latter but mroe upfront and clear in the former.

Look, the psychedelia in stoner rock/metal comes from the doom metal slow jams in Black Sabbath's music...the rawness and drug related musicality and asthetics of stoner metal also share something with the doominess of Black Sabbath...sludge, doom, stoner....they're all common in this way...apparently, Black Sabbath's song Sweat Leaf was a major influence on stoner metal...

Maybe this is just me, but I never really consider those last three Stoner Metal. I mean, Jesu is closer to a kind of depressive sounding Post-Rock with some droney, dreamy, industrial overtones. Isis and Cult of Luna always came across as their own genre. They are at times really chaotic and crushing and at other times really mellow. Sort of like how Post-Rock builds up to a songs climactic end, they do that, but in a much heavier way. So maybe Post-Metal? Ha. Not to get really detailed, but out of those I would only consider YOB Stoner Metal.

By the way, they say Queens of the Stone Age is partly Stoner because they are. Also, three members from "the fathers of Stoner" Kyuss were in the band at one time. It is also largely Josh Homme's band.

Yeah, Isis, COL and Jesu definitely arent stoner metal. Isis and COL have roots in noisecore, while Jesu is shoegaze/industrial...

Thanks, i realy was wrong...now, i must say that stoner metal is not so good as i thougt...and the "real" stoner metal is not stoner....maybe the name of the genre stoner metal should be changed because this music (like QOTSA) is not stoner neither for stoned people.

I'd just like to elaborate on the Black Sabbath point, that if you ask me, songs like Sweet Leaf (and many others on Master of Reality) and Hand of Doom are quite the blueprint of a lot of stoner. Also, isn't metal a subgenre of rock?

But I didn't see a mention of Acid Bath, a superb band with some really trippy shit going on and heavy Sabbath influences with some nods to the doomy side as well. Their lyrics are sheer brilliance

Stoner metal is great. Sleep is my favorite, and QOTSA. I would say doom and stoner are like distant relatives, too.

About changing the name of the genre? It was a joke (with some reason).
What i mean is that the name of the genre (stoner) is not what i thougth. I thougth that the name stoner was related to the type of music that is made by the bands of this genre.
Of corse that a genre name cannot be changed.
