Yes indeed, The Sword is great straight-forward bluesy Doom, they're actually playing near where I live this Wednesday, I might go. Another favorite of the "Stoner" or "Desert" genre of mine is the Argentinian band Dragonauta. With a name like that (pulled from Sleep) you know they got to kill. Check out there wicked video for their song "Tomegapentagram."

Yeah, i saw the sword supporting clutch in glasgow...just caught the end of thier set. they're alright but nothing special.

Does anyone miss the old orange goblin shit? i've heard the last few albums and they just aint anything compared to "frequencies..." and "Time travelling".

urrent favourite album - Busse Woods by Acid King. I had been delaying checking them out for quite a bit, but man, they're frigging top notch! Those female vocals are just too trippy...

@Kharn: Yeah, I kinda get what you mean about Orange Goblin. I like their old era, but the newer era stuff is just different. It's dirtier and more motorhead oriented heavy/rock tinged stoner more than any of the older stuff. But having to pick, definitely older era, hands down.

When it comes to stoner/doom, nothing can beat Spirit Caravan - Wino has probably one of the best voice in this genre. Also Cathedral - the live show was probably the best one for me so far. There has been many good stoner (metal) bands that have releases very good albums this year - like Alabama Thunderpussy, Sheavy, Black Betty, Beyond the Sixth Seal (I find it has very distinctive stoner influence).

I never thought about ATP being heavy metal. When Kyle Thomas joined ATP the sound definitely changed, but I thought it was going towards southern metal, being more groovier than their previous releases.

Well, then you have to decide the difference between southern, stoner, psychedelic, and so many other genre's that use blues as a foundation. It's really hard to decide what one band is, but I don't care much for genre's. One thing I do know though is that I love the shit.

In concurrence! But you can actually make out the difference between those bands. That's just one of the many reasons I love Doom (which I feel encompasses all these genres) Metal.

Anybody like The Atomic Bitchwax? I've heard only their self-titled and it's pretty damn nifty. It's basically some very groovy, bluesy stoner rock. I'm in the process of checking out other albums of theirs...

To me, I like alternative forms of Metal as opposed to Stoner Metal when I am stoned. Puzzling.

Anybody heard of this Swedish band called The Quill? I haven't seen their name drop in too many places, but I randomly obtained two of their albums and they kick mighty ass. It's like Soundgarden meet older era Sleep or something like that. They have a predominant alternative rock/grunge influence but they're definitely an out and out stoner rock band. Very, very good, all in all. Any takers?

Thanks for the recommendation! Acid King is pretty fucking good; almost hypnotizing. The California stoner scene seems pretty strong...

It's weird, I rarely smoke weed, and yet stoner metal/doom/sludge/whatever is becoming my favorite genre.

^^Stoner metal was a favourite genre even before I started smoking weed (which was quite a long time ago nonetheless )!

This is like I said before, it can get confusing to some people. BLS have a very heavy blues influence, just like Stoner Metal, so a lot of those genres share characteristics.

Blues are beggining of all metal remeber it and stoner still are heavy blues influenced, only black man can play real blues and white can play stoner

Stoner has references to psychedlic rock and I think is often laid-back, a good example being post-1992 Cathedral - listen to "Earth Messiah" on this Myspace if you can, or watch their video for "Midnight Mountain" in Metal Storm's youtube video section

Sludge usually actually sounds dirty, and can have a hardcore influence in terms of intensity in the performance. See Neurosis, Cult Of Luna or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQkTQIN_5Fk

Drone I think is quite minimalistic in both the instruments it uses and the melodic/harmonic ideas it develops, and could have electronic ties and usually sound slow but don't quote me on that. I don't think I've heard any for myself

In www.doom-metal.com are a lot of songs for listening try tham and about Cathedral try also Electric Wizard boath are werry good stoner bands

Stoner and sludge often overlap. Bands like Down fall into both categories (well, more stoner to me, but some call them sludge). The area of sludge where bands like Neurosis reside tends towards post-metal and is more experimental and atmospheric.

And the debate about stoner being stoner metal or stoner rock, well, many stoner bands dislike the word "metal" in classifying themselves. Once again, there's a lot of gray area between clearly stoner rock bands like Kyuss, and heavier stoner bands like the aforementioned Down. Personally, I'd say stoner tends more towards rock and sludge more towards metal, and there are a multitude of bands that lie in between.
