What do you think of the Norwegian band Arcturus? I'm a big fan of them. I love the black ambience they produce along with their avant-garde music. Definitely an original band by most measures. What did you think of their latest album 'Sideshow Symphonies'? I enjoyed it. Not my favourite but highly enjoyable, no doubt.

Thanks Ed Hunter, Kariasaksis7 and Rageing atheist!

But now it's for me even harder because you three all say different albums.
I will try them all, and again thanks for your help!

It depends what kind of music you like more metal or more avangard

I've only heard "La Masquerade Infernale" which was pretty good. I've heard a bit off "Sideshow Symphonies" which was quite good too and have just heard a few songs from some of their other albums. They've got a nice mixture of avant-garde, ambience and black metal. Having heard only one full album and bits and pieces from the rest of their work I guess it's not enough to make a proper judgement of Arcturus, but I can say with certainty that from what I have heard, they're a great band.

I would have loved to see them live when they came to Australia. A friend of mine went to see them here in Melbourne and told me the day after the show that they broke up, mentioning that the Melbourne show was to be their last one ever. Was quite disappointing.

I know, Arcturus would have never descended to Dimmu style mediocrity. The Sham Mirrors is such an awesome album.

Arcturus' sound wasn't going in the same direction as Dimmu's at the time of the breakup anyway, so I highly doubt that they would have suddenly become like them, despite sharing a few band members. In fact, I'd argue that the early sound of Arcturus was closer to Dimmu than the newer albums. Still, for me the first two albums are the best, with Garm on vocals. I really love Vortex's voice too, and he performed older stuff really well live, but the material was stronger earlier on IMO.

I think it may be about sex, think about it "spit white speech the voice is mine", this may refer to sperm, "The butt size head
voluptuous white cum cigarette slit the spitting line" may refer to ejaculation and so on.

Yeah, some words point in that direction, but still, its pretty much bunch of unconnected words, I dont know...

I really love this band, the break up was quite painfull but it was maybe the best thing to do, Arcturus ain't Arcturus without Garm, alltough Vortex did a quit job trying to replace him.

I was introduced to this band a long time ago through an online Black Metal radio station. (BlackMetalRadio.com)

They are a great band in my opinion. They are great musicians and write some of the most hypnotizing piano melodies I can think of in Black Metal.

I havent heard their new album yet. I'll have to give it a listen.

A band that was in my "curiosity to check" list for such a long time. Never listened to it until I saw it's ranking in the MS charts, (first..!!! no more now though) so I listened to The Sham Mirrors. A VERY interesting album it is... Really amazing.

Yes, Sham Mirrors is a very good release, you should also listen to La Masquerade Infernale, it's as avant-garde as Sham Mirrors but darker and retains some of the feeling of black metal (actually I'd even call it a black metal album, though most people would probably disagree with me here).

"La Masquerade Infernale" is way out there in comparison to "The Sham Mirrors." I don't really consider the later to be really that exploratory at all.

I prefer the "Sham Mirrors", even though it's fairly straightforward and not nearly as difficult to process and digest as "LMI."

The Sham Mirrors is good, even though I don't really like ICS Vortex's vocals. But, I don't think any of their releases comes close to the brilliance of Aspera Hiems Symfonia. Garm really has multifaceted vocals that suits their style better.

I think extreme avant-garde metal or post-black metal would sound better, the meaning of the word "gothic" has been kind of ruined by ugly chicks in velvet dresses singing about love and angels and that kind of shit. But, yes, if you mean gothic like Dead Can Dance and that kind of stuff I definetely see your point.

Yes, I didn't think that you meant those shitty "gothic" bands with Gothic... it's just that I feel somewhat uncomfortable about the term "gothic", the term has become something akin to "dirty words" in the metal scene, because of all these abominable bands that have often been described as "gothic".

Allright, La Masquerade Infernale rules as much, you were right.

I also got Ulver's Themes from William Blake's 'The Marriage of Heaven and Hell'. Heard it was similar.

all albums are great from this band, but unfortunately they disbanded. I love Vortex's vocals! I think something went wrong into Sideshow Symphonies, they didn't work as much as they can, especially in the production of this album, some tracks are clear and some other are not (at least in my version). anyways, RIP Arcturus
