Post-rock is probably the classical music of our times. i never thought music can be this visual and megalomaniac at the same time. in a good way, lol. So, this thread is to ask and recommend. Next to the big names like GSYBE! and Explosions in the Sky i'd like to mention some not so known, but imo much better bands.

For start, the finnish Magyar Posse. Imagine GSYBE and 70s prog rock combined. then add some humor and some optimism. and you still have no idea about what they sound like. Their best album is Kings of Time, so that should be the first to check out.

Another good band is Boris. i bet they're not unknown in the metal world, but their post-rock side pretty much is. Flood is so good it sometimes makes the guys from GSYBE run for their money.

The 3rd amazing band is MONO. another japanese act, with a more sweeter sound. they have only one album out.

Mono from japan... i've seen them live and they were really a cool band
Meanwhile, Back In The Communist Russia and A Silver Mt.Zion are good bands too
while i would like to recommend Ghaust from my own country (actually their style is closer to Post-Metal i think)

For whatever reason, Spotify only has the Gifts From Enola side of the Well Worn split with Caravels. The Gifts side sounds good, though:

Not a new discovery, and probably not new to many of you either, but I'm just rediscovering how good Planning for Burial can feel on a summer night. Kind of lo-fi/drone/post-rock act. They have a new 2012 EP out, but this is from their LP.

Recently discovered a Portuguese post-rock band, didn't know any other before. They are called Katabatic and their latest "Heavy Water" is quite intense.

Oh man, Silent Whale Becomes A Dream are really cool. Beautiful stuff that gives me faith in post-rock yet. Their album is from last year.

The Pirate Ship Quintet were pretty hyped when they released their EP in 2007, and now they finally put out a full-length. It's probably my favorite post-rock album of 2012.

Thought I saw it is only 4 songs long, sure it's not an EP?

Isn't that in line with all their albums? F#A#Infinity is two tracks, the two-disc Lift Yr is four tracks, Yanqui is five tracks. Anyway, there are two 20-minute post-rock pieces and two 6:25 and 8:28 minute drony tracks, so it's plenty of material. Sounds pretty good, though I was never in the camp that considered them the best post-rock band ever.

That said, the distinction of EP and LP is arbitrary and kind of moot in the CD age, with 70-minute EPs (Reverend Bizarre) and plenty of 30-minute LPs.

Basically: It's the band who decides what the release is.

I admit I have never heard of these two before, but then again there are probably 1,000 instrumental post rock bands in the world and I've probably listened to 500 of em
This sounds like textbook post rock to me, SSDB as Craig says, so I will give you a few bands worth checking out. Also check out the post/sludge/atmo thread, you will find something you like!

Not my favorite post-rock band, but yeah: their long line of mediocre albums easily makes you forget how good some of their early stuff is. Namely, Young Team, CODY, Happy Songs for Happy People, and EP+6.

It also occurs to me that if you like the creeping, methodical style of CODY, you should check out Bark Psychosis' Hex and Slint's Spiderland. Especially the former is one of the best post-rock albums of the 90s, or ever.

For the most part I love post-rock, I love ambient/atmospheric rock in general, though sometimes it can be boring if it's just a long droning instrumental piece without much variation.
