Interesting opinion, can't say I'm in accordance with you, but I do agree that it's a very cool album. The only word that I can use to describe 'Dark Throne & Black Flags' is FUN. It is so bouncy and rollicking and generally enjoyable that you can't help but headbang along. Some riffs really get stuck in your head too. I also loved the comment in the booklet: "As far as we know, no modern metallers were harmed in the making of this album. BUT, we can always hope..."

Might give Dark Thrones... a whirl seeing as everyone's bollocking on about it. Haven't listen to them since The Cult Is Alive which I gave one listen and promptly abandoned. That was two years ago so who knows, might appeal to me now.

Really? :
I think FOAD and Dark Thrones and Black Flags were fucking awesome, easy songs to get into = no boring bullshit.
The last two albums pretty much carry punk aesthetics like The Cult Is Alive..did you like that one?

It's the ease of getting into it that put me off, personally. I tend to enjoy an album more if it's hard to get your head round. I listened to The Cult... and decided that I couldn't really derive anything from it that would take more than one or two listens. That's why I prefer the early stuff; the harsh production and razor sharp guitar tone was most pleasant =] Yeah I'm not overly keen on punk as a main feature. As a smaller aspect of the music I can appreciate it however.

That's an interesting take on it.
I like the mix of black metal and crust punk. I think I would have gotten bored of any new darkthrone releases that sounded like a mere repetition of past work.

O well, I agree with you... SJ is really enjoyable at it's more death than black. The riffs are catchy as hell. And I liked his growls..

soulside journey is pure death metal, there's nothing black metal in it. it's quite melodic too. and really nice tbh.

O well, that's true the black metal thing that would come later is not there at all.
But when I hear SJ I understand that it was obvious that Darkthrone would turn to black metal.

lol. that's strange, because only after releasing Soulside Journey they decided to change styles. that's why Goatlord sounds the way it does.

I don't remember which album was first, Soulside or Goatlord? Because as far as I know they couldn't realise Goatlord for a reason that I don't know ... And Goatlord is not Black metal.

When I listen to SJ I get the same fealing that the time I was hearing the debut of Tiamat, their debut was old school death metal but at some times they played with alittle gothic/melodic vibe that turned to their main genre after a few albums...

I disagree, while Goatlord was indeed kinda boring... SJ was a really good old-school Death Metal. Quite underrated by the death metal fans IMO.

That is funny you got it at hot topic. which begs the question, wtf where you doing in a hot topic to begin with?

I went to Hot Topic to get the brand new Fallout Boy album!!!!

Nah - it's the closest CD store to my house. Besides the trendy bullshit, they have some good stuff like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Bad Brains, Circle Jerks, Bison B.C., Slayer, Exodus, etc etc and just a bunch of thrash in general. Well, not a lot of thrash per se, but more than you would think lol. Plus, it's right next to a really good cookie store

You said Hot Topic and per se in the same post... have you seen the new south park episode by chance?

anyways, new Darkthrone blows, may as well just be called satanic punk

Goatlord is definitely black metal, although it has a fair share of death metal in it too. Goatlord is the turning point of the band, that is why they released it only in .. 96 i think. it was recorded right after Soulside Journey, but because they wanted to try something different, they went on and recorded and released A Blaze.. instead.

eh, but enough with the old Darkthrone. everything starting with The Cult is Alive is more or less fantastic. all hail new Darkthrone!

the new Darkthrone is awesome. frankly, i think the band has only gotten stronger from "Hate Them" onwards. you can call it "satanic punk" if you want, but the fact is black metal has always had a massive punk influence. to quote none other than Quorthon:

"Around the time I formed BATHORY, I was listening a lot to an album by early GBH I believe was called "City baby in attack of the rats*". We based half of BATHORY's initial sound and style on that GBH album. I may have listened to some Discharge, but I don't remember any of their songs or any of their titles anymore. The "Ace of Spades" and "Iron Fist" Motörhead albums also meant very much when we formed BATHORY. So did the first handful of Black Sabbath albums.

kudos to Fenriz and Nocturno for breaking ranks from the purists and doing whatever the fuck they want. so long as what they record is honest to themselves, i'm sure i'll find it worth spinning.

* actually titled "City Baby Attacked by Rats" but close enough - i owned the cassette back in the day.

Goatlord boring?

Thats my favourit album by darkthrone. I for long considered DT's black trinity+Panzerfaust to be the only dt albums that really matthered (back in the days) and bought Goatloard just for fun at the side of some other albums. It tottaly blew me away.

I find it quit epic in someway and really like the experimental feeling in it. Their not rushing anywhere just floating forward with creepy riff after riff . The harsh soundscape and varying really unpredictable vocals gives it such an insane athmosphere. Really the best DT IMO.

The lyrics are pure crystal too...

Lyrics to Green Cave Float :
I am the thousand storms of the black heart
I am the desert of redemption
I soar on dead wings of sin

I am freedom with cracked virginity
arrows of my erection, fade to hear me
but the ones who came with fear and hate

Kiss me!
Deep, long and hard

those who summon

be the scheme at the jinx of jewish fairy tales
is salt upon every soul held by your life

And I wonder
who seeks desolation
to my eyes, holds a vision
embrace last away

Well... It's hard to be sure about it. For example if a band like Paradise Lost were doing the same stuff from the debut. I would love it, but I'm not sure if I would love it all the time and then get tired of it.

Are we aware that this review turned like a big topic that we should post in Darkthrone's thread instead of here? I feel kinda weird now since I'm not willing to talk about this review/album now LOL.

You don't need to be in the right mood to enjoy "Transylvanian Hunger". Anyone with superior intelligence is supposed to enjoy it anytime, since it's pure art. If you don't enjoy it anytime, it's because your IQ is low.

Looks like your 'logic' applies only to other people and not to yourself.
