Immortal, they're awesome and have a special meaning in my life as Black metaller... one of the first bands I truly emnjoyed, and although I hadn't been listening to them so much on the last monts, I like them with passion... this is my opinion on their albums:

DIABOLICAL FULLMOON MYSTICISM: Very dark and occultist, but I still see it too much as Bathory worship... the underdeveloped atmosphere chills the blood and the vocals are an icy chainsaw, incredibly cold... as I see with their debut Imortal aren't yet unique, but is a wonderful piece of Black Metal.

PURE HOLOCAUST: An awesome progression... ore original, the sound is more defined, the rhythm is faster and the production allows ti enjoy the music a lot... I love everything in this album, every riff is exactly in its place, great drumming and the best vocal performance on their career.

BATTLES IN THE NORTH: Following the line of the previous, but weaker... maybe it's too cliché-filled and that makes Immortal to appear too much to be a selfparody, but it's still a very good Black Metal album.

BLIZZARD BEASTS: My favourite... fast, blasting, their best lyrics, great ugly production, short styraight-to-vein songs... many of my favourite Immortal songs belong to this album...

AT THE HEART OF WINTER: I had had big inner struggles about this album... it confuses me, I don't really know if I love it or hate it, sometimes amazes me with its beauty, originality and freshness and other times bores me to death and I feel some kind of lack of their intrinsic bliss... I miss the rhythm! I woudn't dare to rate this one.

DAMNED IN BLACK: Used to love it... I like the back to the straight-forward attitude, the thrasher riffs and its great catchiness... hadn't listened to i ages though (I actually don't even know if still own it).

SONS OF NORTHERN DARKNESS: Dissapointment. Sounds very unispired except by 2-3 songs, boring, I don't understand all the mess around... certainly their most overrated album...

well, that is I guess... I think Imortal chose a good time to disband, they will be remembered as Black Metal heros and I really respect their music, although I find some of their stuff certainly more worthless than others...

Battles in the North was excellent, as with all Immortal albums iv heard. My favorite has to be The Heart of Winter. Mainly because it has a very progressive sound to it, its much more tchnical than alot of Immortal songs.
Dose anyone else find Immortal's lyric to be comical most of the time. I guess when i see pictures of Abbath and Horgh in the cover of At the Heart of Winter i just piss myself laughing.

What do you guys think of the new "I" project undertaken by Abbath? Do you think it will match Immortal, or just be a continueation of Immortal under a different name... Credit to abbath, its a good way to get out of any contract holding Immortal by the balls.

I used to be a diehard fan of Immortal. Later on, I realized I dislike their newer releases, and sticked only to the first four albums. They had a really disappointing decline with the departure of Demonaz, IMO. Now, I only listen to the first two albums. Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism has a very mystical feeling to it, and Pure Holocaust has an amazingly raw sound. I'm really glad they quit. It's saddening to see how they became so famous, while their first albums are the most underated ones.

I prefer their first albums too.Well I prefer Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism, because it has a lot of feeling within, atmosphere as I said in the old thread.Pure Holocaust is amazing too, fast, etc but not as special to me,as their debut.

'I', just going by the lineup, should be bloody good, and while other 'supergroups' à la Scum didn't quite perform IMO, I think this should be an exception, because the moment Demonaz got himself involved in songwriting I knew that the old combo of Abbath and Demonaz would gel as awesomely the second time as the first.

For those that perhaps don't know, 'I' is composed of Abbath (Immortal), Armagedda (original Immortal drummer), Arve Isdal (Enslaved guitarist) and King Ov Hell (Gorgoroth bassist).

I agree with later Immortal (specially the last album) being overrated... come on, SOND doesn't have so much to give..

I really like Immortal.I liked all their periods. From the mystical and ambient Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism,to pure black metal period with excellent albums like Pure Holocaust and Battles In The North to cold atmosphere of At The of Winter until the thrash period of Damned In Black. They are the biggest loss of black metal IMO.But Abbath in a interview said that there is a chance for future reunion

As far as preferences and their body of work, I'm all over the place.

Sons of Northern Darkness is my favorite - the added space makes the sound that much more impressive and punishing.

At the Heart of Winters would be my second favorite for many of the same reasons, "Withstand the Fall of Time" is freaking awesome.

Pure Holocaust would be my third favorite.

After that, there is a decline from "A" material to "B" material, at least in my ears.

Ranking the rest - "Diabolical Full Moon Mysticism", "Battles in the North", and finally "Damned in Black" and "Blizzard Beasts" - neither of the last two really do too much for me, and I rank "DiB" ahead only because I prefer the sound/production to "BB" - which doesn't have either the full sound of their later album, nor the raw qualities of their earlier work - it sounds, well, compressed.

I hadn't seen the lineup, i only heard about the project, but the lineup definately looks solid and quality, and Demonaz writing lyrics is always good for a laugh however cheezy, and armagedda whom i havn't heard perform since i havnt had the pleasure of Diabolicle full moon yet. How do you think Armagedda compares to say Horgh or Hellhammer?

Well, Hellhammer is a one-off genius, and I don't think there are many drummers that can match him for variation in BM. I don't know much about Armagedda's recent drumming, because while the drumming on DFM is decent, it's not the most technical or demanding stuff there is. Certainly later Immortal drumming (with Horgh) was quicker and more varied, but Armagedda must have improved over time too, otherwise he wouldn't be participating in 'I'.

pardon the momentary hijack... I've always wondered about something. Scared4life - did you intend your name to mean "Scarred4life" or, as is spelled now, the equivalent of "Terrified4life"?

Apart from the hilarious image, I think that Immortal were a decent band and I've enjoyed a few of their albums over the years, but never been a dedicated or die hard fan of them. Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism and Battles In The North are my favorite albums but my opinion on their best album would be Pure Holocaust, a masterpiece.

Yes, they rule! They are pretty much the band that got me into Black Metal a few weeks ago. I listened to their later releases first because it took me some time to "accept" or "understand" the "bad" production of their earlier works. I am looking forward to whatever will happen, if Immortal reunite or if I's stuff will be good...

I'm not much of a fan. I'm not much on BM as it is. Stuff like Damned in Black was the best sounding of their career.

Their image is one thing I do like. It's ridiculous, and very amusing too. I've watched three of their music videos and each one made me laugh.

The material that I have heard from Immortal has blown me away, really great black metal, should listen to more on them me thinks. Apart from the awsome music the create.. im really confused with their music videos. Everytime i watch them i cant help but laugh, are they being serious in them or are they ment to look funny or what? Just the part where the vocalist (dont know names sorry) is running down with his guitar on a rock mountain to catch up and play with the other guitarist. Haha that part always cracks me up, I think it looks fuuny and kind of cheesie

Thats just my opinion on the videos ... and i reckon im going to get yelled at by some for saying it .. ohwell . Great music though!
