I really love their music but just couldn't stop myself from laughing at Abbath's movements, for example at 0:46 or 2:28 on the video xD

Soooooo cheeeeeesy.
Immortal's image is THE most stupid looking image in black metal, hands down.

I wouldn't say stupid because I find it funny. However, no matter how much I like Immortal's music, I can't help but laugh when I watch their videos or see pictures of them. It's so cheesy, indeed.

Things like that could work in the 70s and 80s but not today.
By the way, even if Abbath's mimics can remind of Gene Simmons, you can't compare KISS to Immortal in terms of music (Immortal is immensely superior).

Oh no I definitely wasn't comparing the two. I just found it funny that someone said music is more important than image. KISS obviously disproved that notion; although, for the most part, you're right that mere image doesn't work in this generation.

I knew it wasn't a comparison.
Music is definitely more important than image, if we're talking in terms of quality. However, if we're talking of success, well... It's a different story.

And yes, a significant part of the success KISS achieved is due to image, their extravagant shows, etc. Their music was rather basic. A band like that today would never get a comparable success.

I never really liked the music nor the image of Immortal and after seeing them at the Kings of BM last year, I can't understand why they are treated as such a big thing. I'd admit that they have some good songs, but that can be said about a lot of other bannds as well.

I think they are treated as such a big thing for the same reason most of 2nd wave black metal bands are.
It's bands like Immortal that gave BM the image and all the "grim, cold, dark" sound it has (I mean, going further into what 1rst wave started).

And mostly, coz their music is

Its a joke... The image at least, the music is the best here is in black metal. Pure fucking Holocaust!!!

One thing I like about them is that they aren't afraid to incorporate thrash elements into their music, resulting in masterpieces such as In The Heart Of Winter. Besides, how can you not love Abbath?

I'd still disagree with that. Practically all radio hip-hop is only popular because of the "badass gangsta" image associated with it. Unless we're talking strictly about rock/metal, in which case, yes, image doesn't work nearly as well for the most part.

Which band, in black metal, has the best face corpse?

For me, I think Averse Sefira has great face paintings. Not saying that Immortal's are bad.

Not forgetting Behexen, Emperor, Enthroned, Geist, Gorgoroth, Koldbrann, Maniac Butcher, Mgla, Ragnarok, Sturmkaiser, Satanic Warmaster, Sarkom, Uruk-Hai. They all have impressive face painting (or we call 'image')

Ya I was aiming for metal specifically. Not starting an argument as to whether or not fans of metal are "more intelligent" in any way than "those other people", but when you listen to genres that aren't promoted on the radio or TV, it means you have to work for your listen - meaning the average listener wants the catch to equal the chase. Nice face paintings and fancy leather boots won't do much for a metal band if the music they play is shit.

If metal were more like pop, in that it was popular, fans wouldn't be so critical of its musicianship, as it's presented to them, which limits the workload of "digging" for that music. And this of course is saying a lot, as Immortal is one of the most accessible and popular black metal bands in the history of the genre.

Just a little disclaimer - this really isn't meant as a shot at pop or as a means of saying METHUL IS TEH GREATEST GENRE EVAR

Of course it does - you misunderstood my post. All genres need accessible representatives in order to help expose the listeners to what the genre has to offer, after which the listener hopefully moves on to check out what's lurking in the underground scene.

I wasn't accusing Immortal of being a bad black metal band due to their popularity or accessibility (I'd argue the opposite, in fact), I was just reflecting on how they are a popular band within the metal scene that makes use of and takes advantage of the simple marketing strategy of "image", which is also not an insult.

Ah I gotcha now . I agree though. As image-conscious as black metal is, there are bands that use their image effectively. Immortal are probably the best band to exemplify this.

I do love them. As silly as I think they can be, they do back it up with seriously good music. I can't wait to see them at Bloodstock UK this year

Sure, the genre needs more accessible bands like Immortal or some others to make people aware if its existence. What it doesn't need is bands like Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of Filth or Darkthrone's and Satyricon's recent stuff to give newcomers a false idea of what Black Metal music is.
Imo, Dimmu Borgir and later Darkthrone give a very bad image to Black Metal.
