Black Metal needs at least a handful of accessible bands though surely? How else will it's fanbase grow without bands like Immortal or Absu to get the listeners to acclimatize themselves to this type of music?

Sure, the genre needs more accessible bands like Immortal or some others to make people aware if its existence. What it doesn't need is bands like Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of Filth or Darkthrone's and Satyricon's recent stuff to give newcomers a false idea of what Black Metal music is.
Imo, Dimmu Borgir and later Darkthrone give a very bad image to Black Metal.

I like Dimmu Borgir, but I don't rate them as a black metal band as such. But yes, these bands aren't a true reflection of what black metal has to offer, whereas Immortal at least are.
I will also say that NSBM bands aren't much better for giving black metal, or indeed metal as a whole a very positive image either.

NSBM provides black metal with a lot in terms of image. Definitely not positive, but if Grand Belial's Key, Satanic Warmaster, Temnozor et al are publicly banned and denied access to various venues, after which they speak out against said venues and their supporters and everyone involved with banning them in the first place, black metal conversation makes its way around the world.

Just look at what Varg alone did for black metal. He almost single-handedly fed an entire musical genre practically nobody on this side of the world had ever heard until his sentencing, and now it's one of the most practiced metal sub-genres.

I think it is stupid to use music as a vessel to promote specific political ideologies. That's a thing I really hate. Especially as some ideas promoted by those bands are obsolete and retarded.
I don't think I happen to listen to any NSBM band, in fact. Not because of the lyrics but simply because it seems no NSBM band is playing a kind of Black Metal I like.

But racist lyrics is a thing I deeply despise for sure.

Music should not alienate people like that. It should not be exclusive to those of a particular ethnicity or religious belief.
Having said that, I may be contradicting myself as a lot of Black metal bands such as Immortal or certainly Behemoth are overly anti-Christian. It's a double standard, but probably because it's either an easy target or it's done somewhat more damage than good.
I don't know, it's a murky topic, and I perhaps shouldn't get too much off topic from the thread. I'll just leave it with "Immortal are awesome"

Didn't Immortal admit to their lyrical content being overtly fantasy-inspired because they're Jewish? I might be mixing that statement up with another black metal band, but I know it was in the news in the last year and it was one of the "bigger" black metal bands. Almost positive it was Immortal.

Didn't Immortal abandon Satanic themes after their debut? @ To Troy, I doubt that anybody in Immortal is Jewish, seeing as they have an album called Pure Holocaust.

I don't think Immortal were ever really 'Satanic', even on the debut. Inspired by dark stuff, certainly, but not involved with the church burning and such, like some other Norwegian bands of the time, and not explicitly writing about Satan.

Never heard anything about them being Jewish before, if someone's read that somewhere then it was probably about a different band, or just some stupid Internet rumour. (Not that it would really matter anyway).

Pretty sure it's another band. And, whether or not this seems odd to anyone, there's a chance I was dreaming that I read a news article posted on this site about Immortal being Jewish.

Y'know, 'cause I dream of MS when I sleep.

Haha, well, you originally said you were "almost positive it was Immortal" and now you're "pretty sure it's another band", so that's quite a change.

Still, after being on MS for a while, I'm sure many of us have had MS related dreams that perhaps we've got confused with reality..! If anyone ever says that Marcel sold all his Doom Metal albums to fund his secret love for modern Power Metal, or Bad English has become an English teacher at Oxford university, or Dane Train is actually the leader of a Devil worshipping cult, then that must be the result of someone's twisted dream/nightmare!

I was so positive at first but then I typed "Jew" and "Jewish" in the forum search and nothing came up. Then I searched for Immortal in the news section and still no dice.

I mean he is (musically) similar to me and a lot of self thought guitar players, and he is not some pompous dick like the vocalist from Mayhem(I dont remember names that good ) and Kronos from Venom....

yes,it is him alright...

I don't think I agree with that. While Abbath seems more down-to-earth and generally separates himself from the "tr00" black metal crowd, Necrobutcher's a typical businessman. He understands Mayhem's cult following and current popularity, and his lack of interest in the media and in pop culture and in America might be misconstrued as arrogance. Personally I don't think he's any less down-to-earth than Abbath; in fact, he may be more so in that Abbath almost seems out of touch with the Norwegian scene, as if Immortal are something else, something "above that".

Again, I can't say with confidence about either musician. I haven't met them, I don't chill with them on the weekend...so at the end of the say you and I can speculate as much as we want from the Youtube clips and scattered interviews, but in my opinion, from the presented information, I'd argue that both are equally assholes/cool dudes.

well I generally agree with you on this and since you are good with words (and I am not,I prefer an AK-47 ) I will leave it a rest....
But as a musician myself i found that Abbath is not that different than me (again as a musician),and people like me (self thought guitar players)...
I meant on his guitar lesions ....I mean he forgot how to play riffs that he wrote (ok maybe it was intentional but than again,it was awesome... )

As far as I know, Abbath doesn't consider Immortal as Black Metal. At least not in terms of ideology.
And I think Abbath doesn't give a fuck at the Norwegian BM scene. I'm not sure if he ever cared, honestly.
