Buying by faith or by listening to the album first?

I wanted to know if people also buy, like me, albums by trusting a band. There are some bands of whom I have more than trust of the high quality of their works as to go to the store and buy their albums right away. As a matter of fact, I am thinking of going to the store and picking Slayer's new album (after their EP of course) without any hesitation. Not only for a new release of Slayer I would do that, but for several other bands which I perceived as if they have a "winning formula" that does not allow them to put a record that can be considered less than good.

Also, at times I go with the opinions of other Metalheads and I venture myself into buying albums of genres that I like very much. Of course, I need to see that this band is praised a lot by the people liking them and that they give reasons for liking them so much. Then I try to listen to some songs from the band and if they are good I decide to buy the album. Up until now this strategy hasn't failed me.

Then, there are those who have to listen to the whole album before deciding to spend any money in them.

I would say that I do a little of all the strategies I mentioned above. It all depends of the circumstances. None, of them has failed me yet, except for one time in which I bought this crappy album for this crappy band but let us forget that now. lol

Now, how do you decide to buy albums? Do you go blindly to the store to buy them or are you really cautious in what you spend your money?

I like to buy it without hearing any reviews so I can make my own opinion. Its also more exciting.

Well, that's a way you could do it if you don't mind spending a bunch of money on an album that wight as well suck major donkey anus. Unfortunately, I don't have the amount of money necessary to ppay full price for an album that I haven't at least heard before.

I do make some blind purchases, but in these cases I nearly always buy the album used or otherwise very cheap.

But then again, I personally tend to not want to buy albums at full price at all (too expensive for my tastes). Most of my albums have been bought second hand or very cheap for some other reason.

If I want something new and I come across a band I don't recognize in a store, first I'll look at what label they are on and if its a label i like, say nuclear blast, I'll trust that enough to buy.

Very rarely, I buy albums out of faith, but almost all the time, I listen to albums before buying. And I don't own CDs, I upload them on my iPod.

I used to buy albums from my favourite bands as soon as they came out but after getting burned with St Anger (Metallica) I now tend to listen to the album before purchasing, although having said that I did still go out and buy Death Magnetic before listening... will not be making the same mistake with Lulu if the snippets heard so far are anything to go by!
I think it's expected now for people to listen to the album or at least a selection of tracks first evidenced by the amount of bands that stream music from the albums before the release date including videos on you tube. Personally I think this is the best way to go as it means being able to experiment a bit more and explore both lesser known bands or just bands you haven't listened to before without having to fork out hard earned cash on every new release

I always download first, and buy the albums that i realy love, usualy the one i give from 8 to 10 in ratings. I bought one album by faith as you call it, Runemagic's Resurrection In Blood, and that was a huge dissapointment.

Yeah it all depends for me, some bands I'll trust to put out an interesting album but for shaky bands (perfect example these days: Metallica) I'll check reviews, listen to snippets, etc.

I'm always buying an album that I have already listened. I only made the mistake of buying by faith once, and it was Tristania Ashes. I waited for that album untill I got my own copy and didn't listen to anything, except for two songs I knew from the live show they did before Ashes came out. It turned out to be a not such a great idea, since the album wasn't as nearly as good as I hoped. I learned my lesson so I listen to an album before I buy it. Then I buy those I really really like and maybe some of those I don't really love to the max, but are from my fave bands.
