Buying by faith or by listening to the album first?

I wanted to know if people also buy, like me, albums by trusting a band. There are some bands of whom I have more than trust of the high quality of their works as to go to the store and buy their albums right away. As a matter of fact, I am thinking of going to the store and picking Slayer's new album (after their EP of course) without any hesitation. Not only for a new release of Slayer I would do that, but for several other bands which I perceived as if they have a "winning formula" that does not allow them to put a record that can be considered less than good.

Also, at times I go with the opinions of other Metalheads and I venture myself into buying albums of genres that I like very much. Of course, I need to see that this band is praised a lot by the people liking them and that they give reasons for liking them so much. Then I try to listen to some songs from the band and if they are good I decide to buy the album. Up until now this strategy hasn't failed me.

Then, there are those who have to listen to the whole album before deciding to spend any money in them.

I would say that I do a little of all the strategies I mentioned above. It all depends of the circumstances. None, of them has failed me yet, except for one time in which I bought this crappy album for this crappy band but let us forget that now. lol

Now, how do you decide to buy albums? Do you go blindly to the store to buy them or are you really cautious in what you spend your money?

When I buy an album I usually go on fiath, instinct, and advice from others. I usually do some research ask around anc try my best to obtain a sample of the music...than I use my gut instinct to determine what I'm going to and not going to buy on a bit of a trial and error process. My method works for me and hasn't failed me yet, and I've gained quite a bit of experience by it.

For someone who doesn't have an income, buying every piece of shit that comes out on the market before assuring, isn't really wise. Especially in a country where you don't afford..much.. I still have a lot of catching up to do in buying many albums i really like, and don't own as cd's.

Usually i'll listen to samples or songs the band has (if has) on the net, read rewievs and research the band a little. Sometimes ill just buy because some friend has recommended the album or band to me. One thing i use to do is going to myspace where allmoust everyband is found official or unofficial with full lenght songs to here.

But buying by faith, walking into an record shop without having the slightes clue of what your going to buy is quite fun sometimes and you sometimes manage to walk out with an real gem other times an album you'll litsten to once then put it in the shelf to gather dust. But those crappy once you can allways sell or excange forwards.

Ever since discovering uTorrent, I've gotten into the bad habit of downloading albums with no intention of buying the CD's! Most of the albums are OK,. but not good enough to make me want to go and buy it. If I like the album, I'll delete the songs and buy it, especially in the case of leaked albums

Blind faith has paid off many times.
I discovered some of my favorite bands in that way
Tystnaden, Lacuna Coil,Nightwish, Tristania, Sirenia, Midnattsol, Silent Force, Edenbridge, My Dying Bride, Funeral Mist, Exodus, Leaves Eyes. And many more i discovered through simply admiring the cover of the cd. But i have also found some real bad ones at times. 95% of cds bought on blind faith are good for me.

I recently bought a My Dying Bride album (As the Flower Withers) by faith and found it to be very good! I didn't know much about this band except that they played some kind of Doom Metal and was kinda popular, I just wanted something "doomish" and thought I'd try them out. I'll without doubt buy another album!
I gladly buy albums without knowing anything about the band, as long as they are relatively cheap. Me and my friends often do it and either it turns out to be good or even great, only ONCE have we bought a bad album by an unknown artist. And that album is so bad that we listen to it contsantly 'cuz it always gives us a good laugh... so it's good in one way!
But buying by faith is something I do, if bands I like release a new album I don't download samples of it, I buy it!

Normally what I do is either borrow an album from a friend, or try to go to a myspace/band page to get some Idea of what the album will sound like. If I like it I buy it (if I have the money, which is almost never) and if I don't I don't. I never buy albums off of faith alone, I always have to get an Idea for the sound.

Actually, I don't trust bands, since there were many times that I bought an album before I've listened to the band and it was a waste of money. So now, I never buy before I listen. So I either download the album first and If I like it, I buy i. I also go to MySpace, if the band has one of course, and then if the music is good, I went on to download more and then buy!

First i download the album and if i find it good enough i will buy it. But there are some bands from who i buy without listening, just by trusting. For example, Iced Earth or Testament. I know these kind of bands will always be worth your money.

by faith , when i like the other albumws of the band and i want to get the new one or any another, i'm 90% sure that the one i'll get, wont be like 'bad' and till this day it'd worked; when i dont know to much stuff from the band, but like their style, with listening few samples i could buy the album without thinking i'll get disappointed; when someone recommends me a 'very good' band and i have listened nothing from them, that's when i need to hear songs from their different records, it's just like to make sure i'll get some good music; although, i've bought some records wich no more than just opinions of people and some of them are ok, and the rest not really; for me is a lil' easier to listening to songs in the internet, cuz before i used to borrow my friend's tapes of cd's , so if people now start talking 'bout how good is a band, i just go to the internet, download some songs, decide if i like it, i'll buy/get it, if dont, i forget them, and keep checking the next 'good' bands till i got good stuff; however, i've got some wich i dont like but i just throw 'em in a box with some other stuff until i find someone who likes that or till i get tired of see them and then i throw them away, but i dont have much of this 'things' though, wich is great, 'cause cd's are a lil' expensive to waste money on them

btw, there's always one band from whom i'm always gonna get their albums no matter what, no matter who, no matter how... yes yes it is metallica ; everybody has their own tastes and likes, and that's what it's all about

most recently the two albums I bought by faith were Motorhead's "On Parole [EP]" which i don't like much..........but then I bought Accept's "I'm A Rebel" and it's good......so it's like gambling really, lol and Bahamians don't get to gamble cuz it's illegal if you're Bahamian, so this is kinda fun for me

I usually listen to at least a few songs before buying anything. But occasionally, if I find a good deal on CD, I'll just buy it and listen to it once I get home.

I used to buy on faith all the time, if the album looked cool, I bought it, it helped me out finding all sorts of cool bands, but lately Ive been having bad luck, so I usually check there stuff out on myspace before I buy.

i learned a long time ago NOT to rely on faith. i think every time i've bought an album before hearing it i regretted it shortly after. *cough*st. anger*cough* then again, it could just be my luck and not being able to control my impulses.

I usually just try to get albums that seem interesting to me. If it turns out to be one I don't really like it isn't a big problem for me, because I don't think that I should only have albums I like...Besides they might grow on me in the future. Occasionally I listen to some of the songs from myspace before acquiring, but sometimes I may buy something without even having heard it before. I like discovering new sounds and listening to something for the first time and not having heard something before makes it sometimes more satisfying discovering new bands.
I usually read a little bit about the band/artist though before making decisions. Album covers and names also influence me quite a bit I think... I like when something imaginative or something I can relate to is used.

9 times out of ten I will be able to get copies of new tracks off magazine CDs/MySpace anyway before the album is released so it isn't an issue - I already know what I'm getting. Otherwise it's just generally a case of seeing what I feel at the time, I still have so many albums to get, I'm not fussed if a new one slips through the net for the time being.

I buy cds out of faith sometimes and most of the time i really like the album. but i also listen to a song off the net to see if the band is any good or i read reviews and see what the album rating is.

I give it an objective view of my own rather than some groupie tells me to buy it
