Hello fellow Metal Stormers. This is probably one of the oddest requests I'll ever make on this website. I'm writing a paper on the geneology of prog metal but I was wondering if anyone knows of any books, websites, or articles that can help me with this research because I'm having one of the hardest times finding resources, so any help would be great.
Thanks very much,
-Pete

Sorry, can't help you. Must be really hard finding sources for that topic. Me myself am currently writing about Black Metal as a degree project, not that hard finding sources.

Hmm..I would suggest some of the basic books about metal like "Sound of the Beast" and "Bang Your Head." They're both pretty wide spread..but I have read both and they do talk some about progressive metal. I would definitely suggest talking about some early progressive metal bands like Jethro Tull, Rush, exc. Hmm..oh and always check out the metal family tree..I can send it to you if you don't have it. I mean you could always mention genres related to progressive metal in your piece. Anyways I hope that is helpful. It sounds like a difficult thing to write but I think you will do well! I would love to have a look when you are finished.

Im doing my senior project on metal, but I did not cover prog metal. I only did heavy, power, thrash, death, and black. What I did was go on wikipedia, read information, and put it into my own words.

Prog Metal is a genre in itself today - even Black Metal has a sub-genre called Progressive Black Metal (Arcturus, Nocturnus,...) You might find some useful info on "Lords Of Chaos".

This has a short blurb about prog. metal. Might be useful, but I dunno

http://heavymetal.about.com/od/heavymetal101/a/101_history_2.htm Another short blurb about prog metal.

http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive-rock.asp- This is about Progressive Rock, but it does have some stuff do with Prog metal. And since Prog Metal came from combining prog rock with heavy metal influences, I think this would be the most helpful out of the three. Hope these help.

You can also try "listening" to it; usually it helps to understand what you read.
A bit info here: http://www.bnrmetal.com/v2/genre.php?ID=P
And here: http://www.progarchives.com/subgenre.asp?style=19 (if you hadn't found it already)

And seriously don't forget to listen to the music itself, it is what you are writing about after all. And I'm very interested to read what you have written.
Good luck

One book that is very good it ESSENTIAL MINI-GUIDE TO PROGRESSIVE ROCK - PART I PAST & PRESENT.

Also, if you need help with anything, please feel free to ask me, I have a very large database of information on Progressive Metal on my computer.

Exactly how academic do your sources have to be for this? Because honestly, I've not come across a whole lot of academic material concerning prog metal. There's a good amount on prog rock, within which I guess you could include prog metal, but yeah. Don't cop out and use Wikipedia unless you absolutely have to.

Speak to Terrorizer magazine (UK), you can contact them through their website. They recently ran a three issue special on prog rock which would probably have some information which might be useful for you. Bands/people included in their interviews are Yes, Coven, Justin Broadrick, Lee Dorrian. I believe you can just order back issues from their site.

We are allowed to use one wikipedia source, and my professor even said that I could cite from the prog metal page on there. However, I'm going to do a good 4 pages or more on prog rock, then talk about metal and the combination of the two. Hopefully I can pull it off.

Cool. But four pages is an awful lot to be writing about something other than the core topic (prog METAL), keep that in mind.

Well I just got the word that the paper has to be between 8-10 pages, so that makes my life a whole hell of a lot easier. It's a genealogy of prog metal so I will need to spend at least 2 pages each for prog rock and heavy metal, 2 more pages for the cultural situations going on at the time, and 2 more pages to finish off the mesh between the two genres, and maybe one more for a conclusion.

Good finds...I'm looking for something similar.

"How has British Literature influenced Symphonic Metal?"

I'm trying to write a paper on this specific topic.

What I have so far is Nightwish's singer, Tuomas, has lyrics in his earliest works inspired by Tolkien. Also, he draws his titles from Edgar Allen Poe and Walt Whitman with "The Poet and the Pendulum" and "Song of Myself" respectively.

The band Kamelot derives its name from the city in King Arthur folklore, Camelot. They're albums Epica and The Black Halo draw from the English drama Faustus by Marlowe.

Other symphonic/metal bands are inspired from British works like the band Paradise Lost (from Milton's Paradise Lost).

I know there is more information here...anybody have any insight on this topic?

Just throwing out ideas would be helpful, too.

Thanks!!
