Kylesa - Ultraviolet
|
Totally Groovy maaaaaaaaan.
That pretty much sums up Kylesa's Ultraviolet. In a world of generic and boring sludge bands that rely on the same rolling and rolling riffs that are overused again and again, Kylesa manages to do something totally off the beaten path. Be (somewhat) original.
This is good. Take your standard Savannah sludge release, and add a nice dose of acid. Boom, you've got Ultraviolet. The standard heavy-hitting, downtuned riffs that everyone loves are still as present as ever, the "air-drum on your van's steering wheel" drum fills and punk influenced beats are still in the mix. The "pleasantly" gruff female voice of Laura Pleasants* is still a charging force in the sound. So, by now you're probably wondering where the "(somewhat) original" comes in.

Desperado
|
Unreleased 1990 studio album by this hard rock/metal supergroup featuring Dee Snider (Twisted Sister), Clive Burr (Iron Maiden), Bernie Torme (Gillan/Ozzy Osbourne) and Marc Russell. This band was poised for success until the grunge scene came along and their label decided not to release it due to the changing musical climate. 11 tracks including "Hang 'Em High", "Calling For You" and "Emaheevull".
Of all the projects Dee Snider has been involved in over the years, the one shrouded in the most mystery was undoubtedly Desperado. First mentioned in heavy metal magazines circa the late '80s, the group appeared to be a promising proposition, as it saw Snider team up with a pair of gentlemen renowned in the metal community - ex-Gillan and Ozzy Osbourne guitarist Bernie Tormé and ex-Iron Maiden drummer Clive Burr - with bassist Marc Russell rounding out the quartet.

Fozzy
|
No matter what people say, bigger is always better - especially when we're talking heavy metal. And heavy metal doesn't get much bigger than Fozzy.
The band is the brainchild of Rich Ward and Chris Jericho, two larger-than-life, trailblazing personalities that have spent the past decade shaping their own brand of sonic splendor, Ward's incendiary guitars forging a path for Jericho's inimitable vocals atop a rhythmic foundation of earth-rattling proportions.
Not that anybody should be surprised. Ward is one of metal's pioneers - the mastermind of Stuck Mojo, he soldered metal with rhythmic rap vocals long before it became fashionable, touring the world with some of metal's biggest bands and being hailed as one of both Pantera legend Dimebag Darrell and Black Label Society/Ozzy Osbourne axeman Zakk Wylde's favorite guitarists. And frontmen don't come more dynamic than Chris Jericho, one of pro wrestling's biggest superstars, the embodiment of charisma, and the byproduct of a lifetime spent immersed in heavy metal.
