And there I was, driving up to Englewood, CO (which is just a suburb of Denver, btw) and the closer I got to the Gothic Theater the more the weather turned to shits. Holy crap it was cold that day.
But this didn't deter me and about 900 plus metal heads to show our support for one of Finland's finest metal bands on their 15 year anniversary tour. Yap, ladies and gents: Children Of Bodom was in town.
For one reason or another I haven't seen Alexi and the gang in years, so I was really looking forward to this gig. Direct support was provided by Eluveitie, while Revocation and Threat Signal were rounding out the touring ensemble.
Needless to say, by the time Children Of Bodom took the stage, the audience was well warmed up and ready, as well as eager to rage to some fine Finnish tunes.
The band started their set with "Sixpounder" from their highly acclaimed 2003 album Hate Crew Deathroll and took no prisoners from that point forward. Right from the get go, the audience went nuts and the crowd surfers came over the barriers. I was wondering if the security dudes would send us out of the photo pit, but luckily all press folks were able to stay for our allotted time.
Next up was "Are You Dead Yet?" (from the 2005 album of the same name) and this was when shit really hit the fan; holy crap! I had to step to the side to avoid being hit by legs as well as arms with fists pounding in the air. Well, to be honest no big deal, since yours truly was also singing and head-banging to the tune.
Dat, dadada, dat dadada, dat (no clue how to write this riff here?lol). I wish they would have played "Trashed, Lost and Strungout" from the album, but hey beggars can't be choosers I guess.
Anyway, I was so in the zone that I really don't remember what they played next, but I do remember the following. Alexi addressing the crowd with the usual, hey what's up and stuff like this, and also complimenting them on the awesome moshing which was going on. Then he said, while pointing into the audience: "Hey you, girl in the Slayer shirt, I want you to start an even bigger mosh pit".
Children Of Bodom really kicked things into high gear with "Living Dead Beat" once again from their 2005 Are You Dead Yet? album. This was the moment for Janne on keyboards to shine and he delivered flawlessly. As a matter of fact, since every CoB song is heavy on keys and not just an afterthought like in so many other bands, the man really knows how to totally rock out on his instrument. And on a side note, I did not see that bra strapped in front of his board until I uploaded the pictures, hilarious.
Alexi was, well Alexi! Kick ass shredder, that's all that has to be said about this one. Positioned center stage with one foot on the monitor, he mainly had his v-neck guitars propped up on his leg, but every now and then he took a step back and just let loose. No wonder Guitar World magazine ranked him as one of the 50 fastest shredder's in today's industry.
Their live sound was really good that night as well; the bass was extremely heavy in the mix which made for a superb listening experience. But the highlight for me that night, well other than watching Alexi play, was definitely seeing Roope in action. I had an interview with him earlier that day and we talked a bit about his prior band Stone and that I was eager to watch him play live. Holy crap, to call him just the rhythm guitarist is not doing him any justice since he also played his fair share of leads throughout the entire set.
Children Of Bodom did a fairly good job on selecting the set list for their anniversary tour with songs like "Blooddrunk" and "Hate Crew Deathroll" being the clear crowd favorites. But make no mistake, the tracks from their 2011 album Relentless, Reckless, Forever made a huge impact as well. "Not My Funeral" and "Shovel Knockout" brought almost everybody into the mosh pit. Don't really remember the entire set-list, but I am pretty sure if you utilize your favorite internet search engine it's all right there.
All in all, this was a very good concert and I can't wait for them to return, even though the chances of Children Of Bodom coming back this year are rather slim.

Nice one, sounds if you were really impressed! As I saw them last time here, the crowd was lame because Ensiferum had played before and no one (including me) had saved breath during their show lol.

Since I do stuff for different sites the other bands were covered for a different publication; that's why. It's all good, and I do have to agree with the set-list. IMO when something is dubbed the 15 years Anniversary tour there should be a good mix of ALL albums.
