A Prelude to PopStorm '08 meeting @hellfest

Okay! Well, last month I sent a message to our fellow MSer, Nervel, asking if I could add a bit more pop to this website He seemed quite enthused, so here is my own entry into the fray of pop music, and hopefully I won't get too much backlash from it.... or maybe I am just looking for it?

So... here is the album and artist I really enjoyed from her 2007 release:

Róisín Murphy - "Overpowered"

and her myspace link is here

Okay, so this music is some sort of pop and disco fusion, with a whole dose of weirdness thrown in at times. Róisín has only recently begun her solo career, and this is by far her most pop album - though it's still slightly offbeat from the normal pop I come across here in the US in particular. She's not much into arrogance or self-advertisement, and isn't self-indulgent in her production or songwriting style. I'd say there is a level of artistic intelligent floating around, but not necessarily in every song - this is pop

One thing that I feelt that in pop is necessary over other genres is the artist's style or appearance. I'd certainly love the music irregardless, but I think that pop demands something to focus on or talk about - because as has been mentioned in Nervel's blogs and some of your posts, even good pop wears a bit thin over time unlike an intensely intricate metal song. So, I would say that Róisín has succeeded in creating an image that sets her apart, and does it with a combination of artistic flair and cheesiness because of its over-the-top nature.

I'd recommend watching the videos for her songs while listening to them - it makes the experience much more interesting! Róisín is a fashion expert - extreme, innovative, ridiculous - all of it. From outfits that make me laugh and dance moves that even the worst dancer could pull off while intoxicated. She's downright weird at times, my perfect style of woman . But many people have said the same thing I do: she's weird, she plays pop, but I just keep coming back for more and I don't understand why?

What I would say attracts me most to her lyrics and voice is a sense of isolation, or loneliness. Not in a depressing sort of way - but in a individual, empowering way. There is a slight hint of somberness in her voice, but not much. She's not really down about anything, yet feels happiest when she's in control of herself with the "opportunity" for romance or lust just around the corner.

And hey, if anything, one great thing about liking a classy pop artist is that it confuses everyone around you who of course endlessly stereotypes me I actually go out of my way to play this cd to friends while in my car to set the mood for the night

Video links: "Overpowered" and "Let Me Know"

The first is my personal pick - more somber with great loops. The second is as dance/pop as she gets. Okay, now where will the PopStorm meeting be @Hellfest? Perhaps we can see t-shirts? I need to recoup all the money I spent on the trip somehow haha.

My flatmate blasts her stuff every now and again on her sound system and I could never stand it.

I've heard some of her new stuff...not really my thing. Some of it was ok, but not something I would play myself

Eh, not really my thing. I have more of a preference for pop singers singing in one of the Slavic languages. I listened to Kalina Jedrusik's "Bo We Mnie Jest Sex" and I liked it. If you have knowledge of stuff like that, let me know.
