I have enjoyed Landmine Marathon for a long time now, pretty much since I started listening to the heavier side of metal, starting with Wounded I progressed throughout their discography. I reached Gallows and I knew after three solid releases they would not let me down.

The album enters with a strong presence, the shrieking guitar leads into the amazing voice of Grace Perry. Grace Perry, ah? the highlight of this album; her voice is raw, powerful and mind-boggling. In songs like "Three Snake Leaves" and "Cloaked In Red" I was astounded by such a voice, I'm not saying this just because she is a woman either - her voice has a power the blasts most others out of the water.

Let's not leave the other instruments out of the picture, Grace Perry's voice is amazing, but so are the instruments. The guitar has a heavy distortion, which adds nicely to the atmosphere this album creates, one that involves heavy moshing and headbanging. The drums add a nice rhythm to the mix, they keep everything inline, they aren't anything special but they get the job done. The bass on this album follows along the lines of the guitar, raw and heavy, however I feel that as with the drums there is nothing special involved, sure it's far from bad, but there isn't really a "wow" factor. One small dislike I have is directed toward Matt Martinez: Matt's vocals are average and are almost a hindrance to Grace's, they simply do not have the power that she has. I'm glad they do not appear too often. This is only a small negative to my overall rating of this album.

Overall this is a very solid release, apart from a few small negatives. I recommend it to everybody!

Highlights- "Cloaked In Red" and "Three Snake Leaves"

In Leviathan, the book, not the band, Hobbes, the philosopher, not the stuffed tiger, described life in the state of every man's war against every man as "...nasty, brutish, and short."

The same could be said for Landmine Marathon's Gallows.

Their latest features just seven tracks and just under 30 minutes of visceral, raw(r!) grinding death punishment. Nasty. Brutish. Short.
