How I love it when great releases arrive so unexpectedly.

It is rare that you get two top debut albums by different bands after the split of one that largely went under the radar while it was active. From the ashes of the talented heavy / speed metallers Spellcaster, we got two awesome bands and none of them have adopted the style of the old one. The first to arise was Idle Hands (now known as Unto Others), who released Mana, one of the greatest gothic heavy metal albums of the past decade. And now, in 2021, we have one of the best heavy / US power / progressive / thrash metal albums of the year in our hands by Silver Talon.

To return to the opening line of this review, Silver Talon produce pure heavy metal of the Sanctuary / Nevermore kind, with some Crimson Glory, King Diamond, and Judas Priest thrown in for good measure. Hell, I can even hear some Protest The Hero in their compositions too. The songwriting is fantastic and I cannot find one song on here that is skippable.

The start-stop riffing of the opener, "Deceiver, I Am" will surely pique your interest. The astonishing lead guitar work on "Resistance 2029", with Andy LaRocque as guest, will get you hooked. The flamenco-style guitar on "Next To The Sun" will have you turn your head. The blackened, melodeath, neoclassical, and extremely technical "Divine Fury" will make your jaw drop, while the ballistic pace of "Kill All Kings" - which starts with a solo and ends with six of them - will have you sold for good. There is even a gothic-tinged, power ballad here in the form of "What Will Be" for the more sensitive metalheads.

The performances on Decadence And Decay are phenomenal. The band has three guitarists and it well bloody shows; the amount of shredding in this album is ridiculous, the constant pummelling of muscular riffing and electrifying soloing does not let up at all. Here's the structure of "As The World Burns", for example, to have an idea: verse / chorus / solo: Miller / solo: VanHoosen / verse / chorus / solo: VanHoosen / solo: Silva / solo: Miller / solo: Silva / chorus. Yes, you read right; in five and a half minutes they have squeezed six (!) solos. Not of the half-assed kind but of the 'what-the-fuck-is-this-guy-doing-he-is-having-sex-with-the-guitar' kind. And I am not even going to try dissecting the pounding riffs for you, by now you should already be playing the album before reading any further.

But Decadence And Decay is not just about guitars. The rhythm section is highly technical and overstated by the mix, and, even though the three guitars are fighting for centre stage here, the bass has a very strong presence and it is quite audible too. I am normally not a fan of polished production but in this case it hits the nail on the head. And, as if all those were not enough, the vocals are also magnificent and oh-so-versatile.

During most of the album the vocalist, Wyatt Howell, brings Warrel Dane to mind and he even resorts to an atonal-like delivery which is extremely difficult to pull off as successfully as he does. At times, he belts out these amazing falsettos a la King Diamond / Rob Halford / Midnight. Truly great stuff. The choruses are all very memorable and admirably performed but what really surprised me (in a good way) was how Howell sounded like Layne Staley in some of the more brooding moments of the album, particularly in the epic, ominous, and progressive closer - and my personal favourite - "Touch The Void".

I miss Nevermore and admittedly Witherfall have been doing a good job to scratch that itch. With Decadence And Decay, Silver Talon are doing an even better job at that, in my opinion, and they prove that when 'true' heavy metal is good, it is so damn satisfying.

"There's nothing sacred,
We all won't survive,
As the world's burning,
I feel just fine."

Just checked out Divine Fury and DAMN. From that song alone I've got to agree with you 100000%. Also I hear a bit of Jag Panzer in there as well.

You really sold it with this review so I had to check them out. I am not disappointed but to be honest you already had me when you compared them to Sanctuary / Nevermore and your despriction of As the World Burns. And that album cover is awesome. Cheers!

I had never heard of him but it seems he has made som really famous video game covers like Doom II, Diablo II and WoW just to mention a few of his works so I was certainly familiar with him without knowing it. Just by googling his artwork he clearly is inspired by the legend Frank Frazetta and that's not a bad thing.

Now you made me curious. I have a few guesses but I'll let it be a surprise

Definitely an intriguing review. Naming Sanctuary, Nevermore, and Crimson Glory in one paragraph raises my expectations sky high though. Not to mention your words on the vocals. I will return with many complaints if this isn't at least good...

You will also return to confirm the review's accuracy though, won't you?

I'm surprised at how much I like this, given how I usually don't enjoy bands inspired by (or merely copying) Nevermore. There was only one Nevermore and I'm going to despise you if you're not at least half as good, deal with it. This is a bit more than half as good though. I like how the production gives a lot of room to the bass, makes it all the more heavy and pummeling. Kind of reminds me of Communic's first albums in this regard. And these vocals, one hell of a tribute to Warrel Dane.

I like this way more than Idle Hands/Unto Others, never quite understood the hype around that one

I try to be more positive on the internet these days so I am here to do just that! Your review definitely nails it when it comes to giving an idea of what this album sounds like.
First impressions:
I was reminded of Helstar at times with those neoclassical touches in the solos, and the vocals give off some Helstar vibes at times as well. I was expecting more Sanctuary style power metal from your review, but there is a fair amount of more modern-sounding Nevermore-style riffage too.
The musicians are all incredible, no doubt about it. It's definitely one of the finer recent examples of this kind of metal, but I don't know if I'll revisit it often as I'm just not as into this type of thing as I used to be.
Production-wise, it's well made, but I'm not a huge fan. The arrangements are packed so naturally it's going to be a wall of sound type thing, that's expected from this genre, but I think a different approach in mixing/mastering could have helped give this band just a tad more of a unique edge (it could have also ruined the entire album, so good on them for going with this, they can develop a little more uniqueness in future albums).
That said, this is head and shoulders above bands like Communic, Desultor, and similar recent bands that attempt this heavy, aggressive, modernized speed metal*. And that's considering those bands all released music in a time when I was craving this type of metal.

*let's face it, they're usually ripping off Nevermore...

I'm the same, but I think in this instance it helps a ton that there is more Sanctuary/Helstar influence than Nevermore. At least to my ears.

I'm not familiar enough with Helstar to be able to tell, but I do think the cavalcading riffs and the mixing of genres are closer to Nevermore than Sanctuary. Not that it really matters, it's a pretty cool album in its own right
