Derek Sherinian, I guess most of you know who he is, but for you that don't I'll tell you. He was the keyboarder in Dream Theater between '95 and '99, but he has also played in large acts like Kiss, Alice Cooper and Yngwie Malmsteen.
And this album, "Mythology" is his fourth solo album, fourth instrumental solo album.

But it's not only because Derek's skills his solo albums gets attention, it's also because of all his guitar-guests, on this album famous names like Zakk Wylde (Ozzy), Steve Stevens (Billy Idol), John Sykes (Thin Lizzy) and Steve Lukather (Toto, ex-Whitesnake and Blue Murder) guests.
With such names there is a chance that the music and Derek himself will be "hidden" behind.

Personally I don't like Instrumental album, don't know why, but I guess the fact that there are no singer and that the man behind the album just "show off" too much. And that's also the case with Derek, there are too much of everything, fast playing and as many turns as possible.
No one can say that he isn't talented, but I still would want to hear him on a solo album with a singer, and see what kind of songs he could write that way, the last at least give a taste of what it could be like.

But (and that's a big But), there are somethings here that even I can't get enough of, the very last song, "The River Song", where Zakk is playing, and actually singing. That song reminds me so much of Black Sabbath, and believe me, it's hard to miss. The doomy kind of riffing together with Zakk's "Ozzy-way" of singing, its just brilliant, just so Black Sabbath.
It's just Derek's keyboard that doesn't fit in, the song would, seriously, be better without his keyboards, but it's still a very good song.

Overall this album is most meant for fans of Instrumental music, but if you liked Derek's way of playing it Dream Theater and the rest, you might as well like this, and I think it's worth a shoot.
Otherwise, for the rest of us, "The River Song" is worth checking out, a brilliant song, but the rest of the album feel's pretty repetitive and not very original, but the good production and Zakk's performance in "The River Song" gives this album a pretty decent score.

Check Out: "The River Song".
