A progressive overdose from England

I received this Cd almost 2 months ago, and until now I'm not sure what to think about it (or write), I mean, to anyone who is planning to buy the Cd after reading this review, the one thing you'll need to know is: several listens are required in order to assimilate the music of Linear Sphere, to say it in other words, their music is pretty freakin' me out.

This is a band with musicians highly trained in the arts of music, they mix several styles like Jazz, Funk among others with Progressive Metal. If you're thinking Dream Theater, you're quite wrong, while you can hear clear influences from DT, this band certainly know how to stay aside from the clichés of Prog music. As a matter of fact, this might be one of the bands that surpass Dream Theater in terms of instrumentation.

Complex song structures, unorthodox arrangements, an oddly syncopated drum pattern, tempo changes, varied vocals, jazzy interludes, instrumental sections, you name it, is all here. From the first song you'll see that this is not an ordinary album, maybe this guys overreact their progressiveness, but is quite fun to listen how the compositions take u-turns at every corner.

Vocals. Jos Géron is a gifted vocalist, he can mold his voice to clean singing, shrieks with harsh overtones, screaming etc. sadly, is plain annoying, I just can't stand this guy in front of the microphone, because musically speaking this album is top-notch, but in my opinion they took experimentation with vocals a little too far, it costs me a lot hearing a whole song with Jos handling the vox. And I've tried, but I just can't. maybe is me, maybe is him, my advice, take a look at yourself.

Despite that, the album is a monument to songwriting, all Progressive fans will enjoy this for sure, no doubts about it, Linear Sphere pushed the envelop a little further in terms of Progressive music, and I'm sure is going to be a new starting point for other bands.
