This is Sweden's Spinning Black Circle's melancholic self-titled debut album to try and grab our attention, unfortunately this may be one of the last things this album will do to people that like busy, action packed music. So half of the metal audience down, how does this album fair when it comes to people who like this sort of music?

Well, the album is like it has a dark veil covering it throughout it's duration, it stays at a steady, morbid pace which makes the album rather uneventful on the whole, but it isn't without its odd charms in a few places. A macabre voice sings a haunting melody through the opener "Faceless" and later on "Remorse" for example. The album has a good ambiance for this type of dark music. During "Prostitute" and "Dire Show" the band have quite some resemblance to Tool in the way of the atmosphere they seem to build during their songs. Other than these points I can't say I find much else that is worth bringing up on the positive side. The only times we seem to build up a bit of intensity on the album is towards the end of the aforementioned "Dire Show" track, which is probably the best track here on this CD, and again on the closing track "Muteness".

But other than that the album stays at a relatively sluggish pace, which really keeps the album from becoming interesting or even exciting. In a sense the album can be considered monotonous, if I put this album on and laid down somewhere, chances are I would fall asleep. This is not to say that this album is not mildly enjoyable, and for people who are more into sitting alone in the dark and listening to morbid music than I am, I am sure they will enjoy this album even more. The album has some alternative elements, maybe this can be categorised as gothic as well, but whatever you want to call it - it is dark and methodical music.

After listening to it a few times it does grow on you a bit, but doing this and even with a good production, you can only like it as much as the music allows you to - and here I don't hear a lot of things that will make people want to come back to this album and listen to it over and over again. If you like depressive, ambient and dark music then definitely give this album a shot, but if the sound of that doesn't appeal to you then stay well away.
