Dysrhythmia
01. Earthquake

Rothko
02. Tell Your Story To The Winds
03. Torch

I can see what the fuzz is all about; a major name in the industry re-released one of their most famous songs in a very innovative version and tossed it to a split CD with a minor league name from the post-rock scene? So it's a matter of basic logistics, we have the big seller (Dysrhythmia in this case) and the band taking advantage of the situation (name? Rothko), it's obvious marketing, but does this lives up to the hype? Does the situation is actually worthwhile?

As a matter of fact it is, the whole split is worthwhile for the Dysrhythmia side itself, this new and extended version of "Earthquake" is like nothing you've heard before, it's a totally different earthquake and I'm willing to pay the full load for this song only. We all know how this band works, how brilliant their music is, so the people behind this project chose the "big name" correctly, the loyal fans of Dysrhythmia have no extra pocket money today because they already bought this Split the very day it came out? but what about the Rothko segment? You might wonder?

Well Rothko actually differs from the first band in the Split; this band plays a post-rock driven music, their structures are 3 times more ambiguous than Dysrhythmia's but their scheme is just not as spastic and heavy, on the contrary Rothko is incessantly atmospheric and really melodic, their songs tend to be "builders", the kind of songs that start slowly and begin to build up into a wall of thick yet crazy atmospheres and when the music (environment) hits its climax they again gradually dim things to total silence.

In general words Rothko seems a little small compared to Dysrhythmia to be perfectly honest, but that doesn't necessarily means they're a bad outfit, it's just that after hearing a twisted and brilliant "Earthquake" things become less intense and much more lethargic. But it is a great band and they're amazing musicians with the most adequate ideas to bring fresh things into the genre, with a little more speed and dynamism they'll be right in the peak of the mountain I'm sure.

This album is recommended for fans of the Avant-Garde, and specially for fans of Dysrhythmia, you'll be missing one of the best songs in their roster if you skip this release!
