Progressive Power outfit Pagan's Mind continues to release great albums with their trademark sound. Their fourth opus, God's Equation, is the logical follow-up to 2005's Enigmatic Calling. With the same stable line-up, and the same approach, the Norwegian band might just be on everybody's mind once again this year.
As expected, out-worldly guitar solos dominate the record, along with neck-breaking rhythm changes and inspiring melodies. The atmospheric passages provided by the keys of Ronny Tegner keep the songs together once more. This time around, the musicians of Pagan's Mind seem to be reaching further into their abilities than ever before. Most songs are more creative than usual. But what makes this band so special is their heavy metal vibe all the way throughout, courtesy of the guitar sound of Jörn Viggo Löfstad. Who can resist so much heaviness as displayed on 'United Alliance'? Above all though, their memorable melodies are the reason why these guys are truly mesmerizing.
Another force of Pagan's Mind is that their progressive approach is unlike any other band. The versatility showcased on the David Bowie cover 'Hallo Spaceboy' is a nice twist in the album's structure. This tune is one hell of a ride, with singer Nils K. Rue really having fun.
Do not pass on God's Equation. This is one of 2007's must buys. The title track alone is worth the money. Everything Pagan's Mind tried to achieve on this album came through splendidly. It is diversified, catchy, heavy and progressive.

Very encouraging review to actually purchase the CD. They've played several tracks from this album in PPUSA, if i am not mistaken they were Atomic Firelight, United Alliance and Hello Spaceboy.
This is one of the CDs that I must purchase before retuning to Kuwait, otherwise I'll doubt it'll ever reach me by mail. Too bad it won't be released here until '08, |

| At least someone who doesn't flame this album just because it's a bit heavier. I think this is an improvement from their previous albums, in a quite different way though. Catchier but still progressive, I agree with your review. |

although i like the feel of celestial entrance and enigmatic: calling better, this is still a very strong release. it's also great driving music for when you feel like stepping on it.  |

same here man. enigmatic is just a more epic album as a whole. thus it's better. |

| Also, I have to add, being a designer myself, I do not like that the woman on the cover is showing her breasts, there is plenty of "art" or media that already does that; I don't think this cover needs that to get it's message through... |

I have to say I agree with you on this one  I don't think it's a particularly well done cover to begin with - it's too fake looking to me. And the nudity is rather pointless here. I think the music could have been expressed in many other ways - and this type of cover is already cliche to begin with.... |

I don't like this album very much. I love their previous albums, but this one is too much of a mixed bag for me. The tracks sound like the band had fun playing them, but they are too experimental for me and seem to lack a general red line melody-wise. The only track I really like is the last one, "Osiris' Triumphant Return". "Hello Spaceboy" is also pretty cool.
I guess if you are a real Prog-Fan, you will love it, but for me, the prog/power mix on the previous PM albums is working better. |
