After losing the guitarist "Olli-Pekka Törrö", Eternal Tears Of Sorrow started conceiving its third album, Chaotic Beauty, the first great album in a series of three (the other two are "A Virgin And A Whore" and "Before The Bleeding Sun"). It took ETOS two previous albums to find the perfect mix of death metal sounds, power metal riffs and the great sound of keyboards.

In comparison to "Vilda Mannu", Chaotic Beauty brings out more energic songs like "Tar of Chaos", "Bhean Sidhe" and a very good Edge Of Sanity cover "Black Tears" but also dark, slightly gothic songs like "Autumn's Grief", "Bride Of The Crimson Sea" and "Nocturnal Strains".

The decision to bring Pasi Hiltula in the band has proven to be a major benefit for the team and for the improvement of ETOS's new sound as the keyboards not only became nondisposable but also became responsible for the success the band would gain...
A representative song for the album is "Blood Of My Faith Stains My Hands", a complex masterpiece standing somewhere between the two categories of songs mentioned above with a lot of changes in rhythm, well inserted guitar and keyboard solos and the introduction of the chorus.

The lyrics, conceived mostly by ETOS's frontman, bassist and vocalist, Altti Veteläinen with scarce help from the crew, make us think more about the name of the band in the first place as every song is shrouded in gloomy feelings of desolation, loneliness and melancholy. I sometimes skip reading the lyrics because they are really depressive: "The dance of two free souls... No more masquerades of mortals. Just you and me as nightly guests at the dance hall of our last Autumn" (extract from "Autumn's Grief").

Despite the growing success of Eternal Tears Of Sorrow, no one bothered at all conceiving any video and as a fan I was disappointed to find almost no live videos on Youtube which means they don't tour (mainly because each band member plays in more than one band). This is sad and I will soon burst into eternal tears of sorrow...

I bought this album on a recommendation from the clerk in the CD store I used to go to. The first thing I started to notice was the instruments and the combination thereof. I must admit at first I thought it was a little bit saturated. I guess listening to blastbeats, dominant keyboard melodies, and fast guitar riffs while Altti Veteläinenit was growling was too much to process. Once you manage to identify what's going on, and how well they manage to put it all together, you'll love it.

Yeah, A Virgin and a Whore is the best.
