"New Dawn" is the last EP of Abigail, a formation from Romania. Composed of five really good musicians and a female singer, Corina, the band uses to play some kind of Gothic Metal with Progressive influences. This EP is only composed of four songs but despite a production which is a bit weak, it's obvious that the band has the potential to do something good in the naughty Metal world. Who know, maybe that Abigail's music will cross the Romanian border soon…
In the past, Abigail seemed to be a bit darker and Doom but now their music is more Gothic and is flavoured by some really nice progressive influences (produced by the keyboards in general). The four songs which composed the release are really varied; some have powerful Gothenburg rhythm and riffs, some other have dark and sad atmospheres, when we can finally hear some electronic sounds and soli played by the keyboard (a bit like on Ayreon). The four songs are really well done, original and catchy. The voice of Corina is not really high which is a good thing, she gives a lot of Power to the music of Abigail and finally I've never had the feeling that I was listening to a new boring Gothic band with a female singer. At the opposite, the combo is a lot more influenced by bands like Paradise Lost, Evergrey or Katatonia even if for sure Abigail is also more Heavy and Power in the spirit.
Of course, "New Dawn" is an EP and with four songs only, this is a bit short but the songs sound good and the production even if it can be a bit weak and average some time is correct. I consider that "New Dawn" is like a real rebirth for the band and I hope that they will be able to develop the music that they have done through this album. If the band can still play Gothic music and add some other and bigger Progressive touches, I'm sure that they will be able to become unique. They can do it in my opinion.
"New Dawn" is a good release. Let's see if Abigail will be able to confirm my hopes when they will release their first album but I'm sure that they are able to do some great things. If you like bands with female singer, I recommend you "New Dawn", this is different than a lot of releases that we can listen to nowadays. Abigail is a good and surprising talented band.
