A metal band who doesn't take themselves seriously can be a refreshing thing, but a joke that goes stale can be even more off-putting. Apparently a concept album about a goat dumped by his girlfriend turning to his deadly sour milk to reap his revenge. Back From The Goats is original in concept, but not in music.
The album soaked in goat references is a straight grindcore release but not in the normal sense of a fast and aggressive massacre. Milking The Goatmachine however take a more methodical approach, the music is somewhat slow and thick. There is some groove, but not enough to get excited about. Plenty of bass finds itself making an assault on your ears, but it is not overpowering. The production of the album, although crushingly heavy with bass is superb in that the guitars, both guttural and harsh vocals and blastbeasts can all be heard very clearly.
Goat references get old. The band do have fun with Sacred Reich parody "Surf Goataragua", but generally the whole goat thing needs to be ignored in order to enjoy Back From The Goats as a piece of music. Taking it as that, it is a good album but absolutely nothing to write home about. The band sound solid together, but sound best when the morbidly-paced blastbeats come in and force their way inside your head. Milking The Goatmachine could be good, the band has talent, the vocals and blastbeats sound great but there are no songs that even resemble anything catchy.
Fun for one spin, but Back From The Goats unfortunately gets old in all ways. There may be situations where you find yourself craving some goat-related metal, then Milking The Goatmachine will be in their element. We have here perhaps the greatest goatgrind album of all time, but until you feel those urges, we are left with a sub-par grindcore album.

| The concept sounds amusing, but unfortunately you're right with the music being nothing special at all. The goat sounds on their myspace are rather annoying too. |

| Not truely grind but still fun-grind is self expression -heavy and happy when it needs to be-to be negetive to music of this sort is to be mainstream in thought-open your mind the world is not that small |

| I actually enjoyed this album very much. If you listen to grindcore to hear completely crushing ear tearing brutality, then this is probably not your cup of tea. Nonetheless, if you want some grindcore with a sort of mellow backbone and subtle musicality to complement the blastbeats, this is a pretty good choice. I agree that the goat theme in the music is poorly done. It is more annoying than it is funny, but the actual music is solid enough to hold up anyways. |
