So what is it about deathcore that repulses so many people? Aside from the fact that anything with the suffix -core attached to it will result in groans and eye-rolling. Listening to The.Daisy.Anthesis is really a revelation when it comes to this mystery. It's the fact that the majority of deathcore involves polishing a genre which, in it's purest form, should never be polished.

Then there's bands like this, who leave the brutality and rough edges of death metal in, but are closer to the metalcore side of things when it comes to rhythmic patterns and a good portion of the harsh vocals. The more death metal tendencies in the music is definitely the strongest aspect. Instead of the tight playing usually found in typical deathcore, it's a rough-edged, verge-of-falling-apart type sound which really does justice to the brutality, along with rawer, more sparse production values.

Asleep yet? Well, considering you've read this far I assume not. Boring, predictable review right? Well, unfortunately that tends to happen when the music fails to really do anything remarkably exciting. Despite the fact that Surface And The Sky is a decent response to most over-produced bands in this genre, it is merely an improvement and not much else. The unpredictable becomes predictable by the 5th song; throat-destroying shrieks (actually, very well done I must admit), jagged time changes, and tranquil riffs transferring to brutal without warning. In other words, very little you haven't heard before.

So basically what we have is yet another one of those albums that's well made, decent on pretty much every level, but fails to plant any flags in one direction or another. Worth checking out but not a must.
