Metallica - Master Of Puppets 21 February 1986
01. Battery 02. Master Of Puppets 03. The Thing That Should Not Be 04. Welcome Home (Sanitarium) 05. Disposable Heroes 06. Leper Messiah 07. Orion 08. Damage, Inc.
Master of Puppets itself is a highly influential album, being the most influential thrash album to ever have been recorded. Many a band have covered the songs on the album, as respect to it. Many a critic have called it the greatest metal record ever, and has been listed in countless lists of best albums of all time. But why is this?
Well, the most obvious thing is the song choices. The song list is comparatively longer in running time compared to their previous album, Ride the Lightning, and the songs are also comparable. You could possible compare "Orion" to "Call Of Ktulu," "For Whom the Bell Tolls" to "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)," but the fact is, the songs on Master of Puppets are better.
Questionably, the lyrics/themes of Master of Puppets are stronger than those of Ride the Lightning, with its themes being based around the conflicts of urges, authority, as well as some nods about H.P. Lovecraft novels. These are all contributing to the album's full-on music.
The songs themselves are magnificent. From the beginning of "Battery" all the way to "Damage, Inc." you feel a rush of intense fury, but at the same time feel exultant. The songs' composure feels like that of a symphony's, but made metal, strong.
Of course, the songs aren't just great because they sound great. There is a story behind each one. After listening to "Battery" you will feel enraged, perhaps losing control of your actions, which is what "Battery" is about. "Disposable Heroes" will make you think twice about the armed forces of today, and perhaps even change your opinion on it forever. You may even feel like your conscious self is not intact after listening to "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)."
Up to this day no one has come close to matching Metallica's finest work, their best masterpiece. Track after track you are mesmerized, clawing for more. It's all too bad Metallica disappointed millions of fans with the release of the black album, and every other album afterwards.

A classic between classics and the top of Metallica like a band. The album that made history, the cd of the cds, the best album of the best band. The album that any person who wants to know what is that world called Metal music needs to have, and listen to.
From the intro of "Battery" to the last guitar riff of "Damage Inc." the cd is just perfect, incredible and all the adjectives you want. In this album Metallica composed the song of songs: "Master of Puppets", astonishing. 8 minutes 38 seconds of pure Metal. The virtuosity on composing of Metallica appears clearly in that song. In Master of Puppets some songs are really dark and paranoid like "The Thing that should not Be". A ballad is also included, which is called "Welcome Home " and Metallica still includes in this album an instrumental track: "Orion"

Master of Puppets is a master class in structuring an album, The tracks and the way they're ordered is near perfection. A landmark album. Master Of Puppets is a timeless classic, A hybrid, Which features the best characteristics of many different kinds of metal. Many people consider it one of the greatest albums of all time and for good reason.

I know I am in the minority here, but I don't care. Coffee is not as bad for you as everyone says it is, ten million Coldplay fans are wrong and Master Of Puppets is not Metallica's best album. This album is considered to be a classic and it is a great effort, but it is no Ride The Lightning. Master Of Puppets may have become more popular than Metallica's first two albums and it may be every critic's darling but that alone does not make it a better album or the greatest thrash record of all time. What matters is the music itself and therein lies my problem with considering this album a mind blowing masterpiece, which it is not.

| Everyone already knows this album is incredible, kinda seems redundant to review it. xD Still, nice job! |

Where the hell did this come from?... I don't see it anywhere... except here ofc. No reviews page, not on the member's own review section.
Still, redundant as hell. |
|
|

For starters... another 9+ guest review for a classic album that already has two 9+ guest reviews.
Take a drink.
now... as for "the most influential thrash album"
hardly. it's a great album, but not close to most influential. many in extreme metal circles would point to Slayer's RIB.
and as you pointed out, it's basically a tightened up version of RTL... only with the roles of the 7 and 8 songs swapping slots in the batting order (RTL - barn burner, instrumental to close ... MOP - instrumental, barn burner to close) ... so while it might be a tad better on individual song by song basis, it's hardly more influential than it's own predecessor.
my biggest advice - next time you want to write a review, shine a light on a hidden diamond. no point in writing a glowing review of an album that already has a couple glowing reviews and that anyone vaguely into metal is probably aware of.
and don't go the straight 10 path, too. |

It was simply an attempt at writing a review, too see if i could do a good job. Also, everyone's opinion on this album differs. Ive seen some people who despise it and some people who are in love with it, its all on your choice, and as its my favourite album, i gave it 10/10. I have listened to plenty of album's, around 100, and i still prefer this to all of them. Sure, it may be redundant, but its not doing any harm is it? So i think its fine |

Straight 10s would be fine in the right circumstances. Taking almost exactly the same structure from their previous album, though should make the originality no higher than a 9
I'd also drop the score for songwriting as the longer songs can feel like they drag sometimes, moreso than on RtL - in particular track 3 which has always been their 80s song that I've hated the most. For some reason I even prefer Adema's recording, despite them not really changing anything... that's a weird one... Other songs simply own, however, so overall it gets a 9 from me
That final paragraph doesn't seem to belong... plus redundancy as others say... Why was this one even accepted? I will say nice job on most of the punctuation |

I am with BitterCOld and Syk as far as the redundancy... Besides that, you give all the evaluation criteria 10, and you don't talk about them... I mean you don't really talk about music, you only touch on the lyrical themes most of the time. Originality 10??? Give me a break (people have discussed this long ago). You don't talk about performance. How come?
Go review Dark Angel's Darkness Descends for a change to put my review of it to shame.
So, my biggest complaint is not actually with the fact that you reviewed a well-known album and gave it a 10, but because you didn't bring anything new to its description and didn't really describe it at all.
I am pissed, really... |

Hmmm
Quote: You could possible compare "Orion" to "Call Of Ktulu," "For Whom the Bell Tolls" to "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)," but the fact is, the songs on Master of Puppets are better.
Welcome Home is (due to song structure and the song's position on the playlist) a direct counterpart of Fade to Black.
While I agree that this is a stellar album, you can't give a 10 for originality for logical, objective reasons - it's a reworking of RTL, so it can't be so original. |

I have to agree with the comments by ktulu, bittercold, vezzy and worpex. There is really nothing you can say about this album that hasn't already been said.
Solid review nonetheless. |

| Albums can always be re-covered, but as per usual MA practice the more reviews a very popular album has, the more you want to consider saying a bit more, or finding something different to say. This suffers from brevity (MS review length restrictions notwithstanding) and a lack of original opinion. It's not the review itself that's redundant, just the angle of it. As per Infected Shadow though it's solid and well-written so perhaps you could turn your hand to some records that not so many people know about. |
|
|
|
| Who gives a shit about structures if the album's songs are clearly representing different sound, riffs etc... |
|
|
|
| Thrash metal legacy is so wealthy even without Metallica! ...and you say it's the most influential thrash album to ever have been recorded! |

His name is Finn Nahon, a boy of fifteen winters who was taught to never retreat, never surrender. With fortitude and determination, he anxiously defied the metal gods by reviewing an album, deemed the best thrash metal record of all-time. It would appear to some people a reckless move to do, yet he knew that reviewing it would be probably the only path to salvation and to understanding thrash metal as it truly lies around him. With sharp visions, nay unmatched passion and considerable knowledge he begun puppeteering hearts from Australia to The New World, awakening the attention of the most ardent fans around the globe. A decent, well-written review was delivered on November, 17th, 2010, to remind those who have forgotten that 80s thrash was the real deal. An era that saw the hell gates opening, incinerating every poser in its path. A glorious era where only the likes of Master Of Puppets, and few they were, were able to conquer the human soul. A kid of 15 people, just reminded me of an era I thought to be long gone.
Nice job kid . Let this not be your last review and remember, there is always a place for those who dare to dream... |

Disregarding any content errors, just one stylistic point:
good grammar goes far in creating a favorable reaction to your review.
if we have to decipher a bad review, we'll like it even less.
at the very least, throw it through grammar check on MS Word |

| Lol if this album was a perfect 10, then Ride the Lightning should be a 12 or a 13 xD |

Review is a bit too praising, in my opinion. Nothing but 10's? Sounds like the work of a fanboy who's still fighting in the Metallica Vs. Megadeth war.
I won't deny that MoP is a good album in Thrash standards, I just didn't think it was that good. I like the title track, Welcome Home and Damage Inc., but that's pretty much it. Rest of the songs were ungrabbing and/or rather exhausting in length, like Disposable Heroes and Orion. The Thing that should not be I did not like and don't get me started on Leper Messiah. What's a track like that doing on this album anyway?
I'm putting on my bulletproof vest now... |

Why? You are entitled to your opinion, I'm a Metallica fan and this is one of my favs album, but I see nothing wrong with your comment.
I agree mostly with what has been said before me. If this is your first review than well done, but I would rather write a review on an album I think deserves a listening, something not that well known |

Thanks to the people who said this review was okay.
And yes, this is my first review, and i have never done any reviewing in my whole entire life.
Next time i write a review, it will definitely be on a lesser known album.
I also intend to increase my grammar skill.
Everyone's opinion is different, some hate this album, some love it. It all depends on the person.
Thanks in general to everyone.
I also changed originality to 9, as i do agree with your comments on this. |

I think this is a nice, opinionated piece. I don't think it will change anyone's opinions of the album, but only because it's been out for almost 3 decades, and you'd be hard-pressed to find a self-respecting metalhead who hasn't heard this album. It's almost required listening.
Since this is your first review, I can understand taking this album. It's a comfortable choice and you really can't go wrong with it, so long as you don't unjustly pummel it into the ground (since the time for that was over 20 years ago), or totally fluff it by posting a picture of yourself blowing James Hetfield with "I RATED THIS A 10 ON METALSTORM" painted on your naked chest.
The only thing that's REALLY out of place in this review is this:
Quote: It's all too bad Metallica disappointed millions of fans with the release of the black album, and every other album afterwards.
Maybe that statement is true to you. Maybe it's true to everyone but the band and a few nu-metal fans who got Metallica tattooed on their taint after the release of that steaming Dump-On-A-Disc we know as St. Anger. Regardless of how true that statement is.. it ends up looking catty, elitist, and, quite frankly, forced. Really out-of-place. It sort of sticks out like toilet paper stuck to your shoe.
Other than that.. I think it's pretty good for a first review. Maybe, as has already been stated a million times, brush up on the grammar aspect. Looks like, and I could be wrong, that you've done quite a bit of reading the seasoned reviewers, here. Keep it up. It's certainly not an easy task and one that will take much practice, young Skywalker. |
