When I put a black metal album on, I'll want it to do at least one of two things: A) make me feel the need to commit arson, or B) make me want to crawl around in a muddy forest, licking roots and shrieking about anomie.

Well, Decease makes me want to go with route B. So mission accomplished Dhishti; you've made my last couple bedtimes a whole lot weirder...

The biggest difference between Dhishti's sound and the work of other black metal acts is that Dhishti use a bunch of folk instruments you've likely never heard of. The Dawul and the Thammattam, for example. And yeah, their use does seem gimmicky at first. But after the atmospherics have had time to be soaked up properly, they add a tribal element to the album that's, at times, nothing short of chilling.

Problem is, the chills come too infrequently. Although Decease is an atmospheric album, large portions of it are coarse and jarring. As fuck. And while I enjoyed said portions at first, they become tiresome after a while. Frustrating even. The songs are of typical atmospheric black length, so the abrasiveness does begin to grind and rub a bit too much for comfort. Yeah, I know black metal ain't about comfort, and I'll gladly fuck off if asked, but ultimately it's hard to overlook the fact that much of Decease is lacking in the transcendental and ethereal departments; it gets its ugly on more than it probably should. For an atmospheric black metal release, that is.

But here's my biggest gripe: that fucking cymbal. Sounds like one of those wind-up toy monkeys. It's relentless. Through each song excluding the intro. I... hate it. Yeah, its overuse might well have been calculated, but that doesn't make me enjoy it any more. It drove me, more than once, to turn the album off before it had ended. So that's a problem.

In any case. I kinda enjoy Decease. But it does have more than its fair share of flaws. So you've been warned.
