Maudlin of the Well, aka Kayo Dot, is a curious band: it is very difficult (and takes some effort) to really understand the music they write, but once you do, it is almost guaranteed you will enjoy it. Bath is yet more proof of that, with all its little pieces of perfection that put together form the musical mosaic of this album.

Each band is a gold mine: there are good riffs and "earth" to hold it together, and some mines have more gold than other mines. This album is full of gold, and it amused me that the more you listen to this album the more gold you dig. This music is so powerful it can make you feel whatever it wants you to. Take "They Aren't All Beautiful", for instance: the song gives you an annoying feeling of discomfort that grows stronger and stronger, until you get to the other piece of gold they buried there. This is a great example of avant-garde metal, going from black/death metal grinds to a somewhat scary jazz/funky guitar sequence.

As many good bands do (Opeth, The Faceless, etc.), the album features both clean voice and guttural screams, and it surprised me to listen to a female voice, which I personally wasn't expecting. To have an idea of the reach of the album, there are two songs you MUST listen to: "They Aren't All Beautiful", as said before, and "The Blue Ghost/Shedding Qliphoth", and even then you may not understand the album as a whole, but I can assure you, if you do like any kind of metal, that at some point listening to the album you will stop to admire a riff, solo or clean sequence.

There is not much left to say about the album itself without going in a song-by-song detailed review, which I am not going to write. My suggestion is to simply play the album while you're bored using your computer (or reading album reviews) and listen to it without really forcing yourself into the music, because at some point you will feel that you need to hear that one riff over and over again, and the curiosity will lead you to loving the album, as it happened to me. The album deserves a 10 because the music is very different from what is usually produced in the metal industry and there are no flaws to point out when it comes to the music itself (the production not included).

Rating breakdown
Performance: 10
Songwriting: 10
Originality: 10
Production: 9

I think it's a bit inconsistent to be worth a perfect score but it's a very good album indeed.

Well I've just begun writing reviews for metalstorm, so I'm open for suggestions/opinions/critics, if you have something that could help me for future reviews =)

Err no criticisms as such apart from maybe understanding the true meaning of what a perfect score of 10 is. Of course that's up to you but a lot of people would argue whether or not any album really deserves a 10.

What JOOE said, nothing you give a 10 will ever be worth it to everyone else, because music is subjective and so is the number attached to every review (re: the jupitreas rule).

What matters is the content of your review; if you think it's a 10, tell me why. You did a good enough job for me to understand that I probably wouldn't care for this, so at least your description is good. The only thing I'd recommend is avoiding that final statement where you say "this album deserves a 10 because", as that "because" should be what your review is all about.

I still don't really get why Metalstorm didn't create a separate page for the two bands..

For the record, I merged the profiles due to a news update posted on the band's official website...last year or so.

The mini-article mentioned the band members continuing with Kayo Dot, as motw had runs its course. Not in the same way that ...and Oceans turned to Havoc Unit, but in the way that Amon turned to Deicide.

Im still pissed off that maudlin of the well is listed under kayo dot. THEY ARE TWO COMPLETELY DIFFERENT FUCKING BANDS! For starters, kayo dot shares only 2 members of Motw, and secondly, Maudlin of the well dissipated and formed kayo dot so they could drop their metal label and be whatever they wanted to be.

I think it's moot, the reasons have been given, it's really not that big of a deal (besides fucking up my list by having to add [maudlin of the Well] to Kayo Dot - part the Second xD )

But since this debate has hijacked this album's thread I have been listening to it a lot more, and I love it more than ever!
