Kylesa is currently on an amazing US/Canada tour with Blood Ceremony, White Hills, and Lazer/Wulf. They hit San Francisco last week and I had a chance to meet with band founders Phillip Cope and Laura Pleasants to discuss the incredible new album, Ultraviolet, their processes as musicians, and what kinds of books are the best reads on tour. Interviews like this, where you can get to know the musician AND the person, are so rewarding. The night was made that much better by the kick ass show that followed. Back in April, Subrosa did a short tour of a few US cities while in the middle of recording their newest album. I had the privilege of meeting the band for a long interview and chat where we discussed their recording of and what to expect from the upcoming album, their incredible sources of lyrical inspiration, and much more. We started with what ended up being quite an in-depth retrospective on the band's history. I wanted to hear their story as well as learn about the Salt Lake City metal scene, of which I knew very little about. Power metal legends Kamelot won 2 Metal Storm Awards this year, both for Power Metal Album of the Year and Best Video. Their wins reminded us... it's been a while since we talked to these guys! Royal Thunder, the bluesy, soulful, psychedelic sludge band (or as they sometimes call their music, "post-apocalyptic blues") is currently on tour in the USA with Pallbearer and Ancient VVisdom in support of Enslaved. Monday night they stopped for an unforgettable show at The Highline in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood. I met up with guitarist/founding member Josh Weaver and new drummer Evan Diprima for an interview. We couldn't find a quiet place at the club to sit and talk so after wandering around for several minutes we just stopped and stood in the small back hallway of a neighboring business. The impromptu environment made for a very fun chat! I didn't know how much time we'd have so I got right to my most pressing question.
