Personal text:

I'm a 3rd-year Ph.D. student in Iowa State's Statistics department. I love music, literature, philosophy, and mathematics. I'm a proud (arrogant) atheist and libertarian.
My tastes: BLACK METAL. Some doom, thrash, death, prog-metal, and occasionally some mainstream metal. I also dig prog rock, jazz-fusion, underground rap, and ambient techno.
Yes, my ratings seem low. I tend to think people overrate albums, and this gets to be frustrating. So I try to be pretty harsh. I typically vote for a lower score than my initial impression suggests I should. I plotted my ratings and it looks like a nice unimodal distribution with a mean of about 5.5 and skewed slightly in favor of lower ratings. That pretty much matches up with what I look for in recommendations. A typical album is just that: typical (i.e. average). I seek out albums that are good, so a random selection of albums would result in an even lower average. That's good since most albums really aren't worth listening to.
