Personal text: I'm pretty open about my kind of heavy metal there is. As long as it's heavy and has some riffs which catch my attention. Guitar solos are always enjoyed, they're not always required but I tend to look down on bands that don't use them as they are a defining characteristic of metal. I'll give anything a listen, be it mainstream, underground or anywhere in-between. My favourite styles tend to be classic and/or power, I just love a good combination of heaviness and melody and that good "old school" feel. Extreme metal is always great and you can't go wrong with it, but I do prefer the more melodic stuff (ie: melodic death metal, not so much into the metalcore). Also, I love weird experimental stuff. Just odd sounds along with heavy metal riffs sounds awesome to me.
