Thumbs up: +81
Best (and worst) of 2011 (thus far).
Partially ordered (thus far).
Subject to change, as I see fit.

What a wonderful year, I have to say! This year has seen me expand my tastes like never before. Discovered so many great new acts, while many metal stalwarts delivered the goods as expected. A truly memorable year, and one that I will forever cherish, as far as me being an avid music enthusiast is concerned.

Disclaimer: This list is not exclusively about metal releases. It also has a handful of worthy releases from other genres which I felt must be highlighted.

Also; a special thanks to everyone who contributed to the list. Also have to give due credit to people who had their own (wonderful) lists, where I scavenged stuff from time to time. Thank you.

Note: The Top 86 are ordered as of now. The rest exist in no particular order. The genres are labelled as I see them, and may/may not be similar to the one(s) in MS (eg.: Melodeath contains all variants including Gothenborg, Modern Melodeath, etc.)

1. Septicflesh - The Great Mass
Symphonic Death // Masterpiece. Expectations were MASSIVE for this one. It's not often that an album lives up to its immense expectations and delivers in spades.
2. Omnium Gatherum - New World Shadows
Melodeath // Totally caught me offguard. A well-rounded album from start to finish. A resolute, polished effort. Greatest surprise of the year thus far.
3. Sylosis - Edge Of The Earth
Thrash-influenced Melodeath // Amazing riffs... songwriting that captivates you... contagious catchiness... what more could I ask for? Exceptional album.
4. Heavenwood - Abyss Masterpiece
Symphonic Gothic // Another pleasant surprise. Dark, atmospheric gothic, just the way I like it. The symphonic parts are to die for.
5. Insomnium - One For Sorrow
Melodeath // WOW. Finally, Insomnium's got back their consistency after "Since the Day...". To say that this album is awesome is a gross understatement.
6. Fleshgod Apocalypse - Agony
Symphonic/Technical/Brutal Death // With near-perfect balance between brutality and symphony to add to its glittering resume, THIS is the soundtrack for doomsday, and the clock's ticking...
7. Ouroboros - Glorification Of A Myth
Technical Deathrash // No (metal) circle is ever complete without an amazing display of high-octane deathrash proficiency.
8. Neurotech - Antagonist
Electro/Industrial // Addictively catchy with a very high replay value, this one's a debut worth remembering. Simplicity is the key to success, sometimes.
9. Fallujah - The Harvest Wombs
Technical/Progressive Death // This year's celestial dark horse. A colossal effort that's sure to pay dividends. Is this is a sign of things to come, I wonder...
10. Obscura - Omnivium
Technical/Progressive Death // Seamless, and tastefully complex, this is Obscura at the top of their game.
11. Wolverine - Communication Lost
Progressive // A really beautiful album, make no mistakes about it. The charismatic vocals and the emotions put into the songs are worth mentioning. One of the prog standouts in a year over-saturated with quality prog releases.
12. Torchbearer - Death Meditations
Melodeath-influenced Black // One word: Awesome. Definitely has a Dissection vibe to their music, and that's all I need to place them high here.
13. Unexpect - Fables Of The Sleepless Empire
Avantgarde // Do I honestly need to explain this one? Then again, where do I even begin to explain this tinderbox of madness? I'll keep it plain and simple; this album ROCKS! That is all.
14. Vader - Welcome To The Morbid Reich
Death // The mighty heavyweights have at last arrived with their follow-up to Necropolis. Relentless and without a shred of mercy; this one's sure to please fans and newcomers alike. The word "solid" just went to a whole new level.
15. Anomalous - Ohmnivalent
Technical/Progressive Death // A high quality techdeth album with a unique flare; the eerie, almost dissonant "atmospheric" passages are a stellar highlight, among other things.
16. Lantlôs - Agape
Post-Rock Influenced Black // Absolute gem of an album. From the stifling ambience, to the grandiose songwriting, everything is on an exceptional level. Stunning.
17. I Chaos - The Human Repellent
Brutal Death // A relatively obscure find, but mark my words people; this is some seriously well-executed brutal death. Songwriting is top notch and fresh, and there's a fair bit of technicality thrown around to spice up the (already) delectable concoction. Do NOT miss out.
18. Scar Symmetry - The Unseen Empire
Melodeath // In a span of only 1.5 years, Scar Symmetry pull themselves up from utter mediocrity to produce yet another blistering record. Washed up without Christian? Far from it.
19. Exhumed - All Guts, No Glory
Grindcore/Death // Good grief! The sheer force on this record is truly astounding! Now I know why Dexter loves to hack n' slash.
20. Fair To Midland - Arrows & Anchors
Progressive/Alternative // A quirky blend of prog and alternative to grace your ears with; brilliantly unique and a great addition to the prog dominance this year.
21. Textures - Dualism
Technical Progressive // Seamless and transcending various genres, yet honing them successfully in their own mold, Textures have put together another gem of an album. Highly recommended.
22. Animals As Leaders - Weightless
Progressive Instrumental // AAL and Weightless? An oxymoron at hand here. This one's heavier than a ten ton hammer approaching full force towards your face! Yes, it's THAT heavy. AND great. AND heavy. A... meh, you got my point already.
23. Symphony X - Iconoclast
Progressive // Iconoclast marks the return of the ever-consistent Symphony X, with an aggressive nature that has eluded us up until now, but with virtuosity and quality songwriting oozing everywhere, who can complain?
24. Xerath - II
Symphonic Progessive // Another one of those surprise packages; twisted, contorted, Devin-esque ebb and flow; a lot of positives going for it.
25. Ixion - To The Void
Atmospheric Doom // In a sea of chaos, this album stands as one of those rare, tranquil gems that totally puts you in the mood to relax. Beautiful melodies, as well as hauntingly "void" atmosphere, are just some of its trademarks.
26. Maybeshewill - I Was Here For A Moment, Then I Was Gone
Instrumental Post-Rock // Truly a great find. Has a lighthearted, jovial feel to it that just uplifts you, however much you're down. Need more music like theirs, that's for certain.
27. Ulver - Wars Of The Roses
Electronic Avantgarde // Slightly underwhelming than its predecessor, but Ulver are in a league of their own, as they can only be compared to themselves. Very good album and one of those "relaxing" ones that may be best enjoyed in solitude.
28. Lunatic Soul - Impressions
Instrumental Ambient/Progressive // As the name suggests, this album is all about leaving a lasting impression upon the listener. Great for relaxation purposes.
29. Mercenary - Metamorphosis
Melodeath // My first Mercenary album, and I must say I'm very impressed. The vocals, in particular, are powerful and are quite an asset to have on live shows. Add that with good songwriting, and you've got yourself a highly enjoyable album.
30. Anubis Gate - Anubis Gate
Progressive Power // Europe's answer to Kamelot? I think so! At the same time, however, their uniqueness cannot be disputed. Powerful album.
31. Seecrees - Genesis
Electro/Industrial Melodeath // Young band with a lot of potential. Above-average debut which boasts a lot of good songwrting, although the vocals leave something to be desired. Not one to miss out on, though, if you are into cyber/electro-based music. A special thanks to Starchild for the rec!
32. Vale Of Pnath - The Prodigal Empire
Technical Death // It's albums like this that break the stereotypical, "wankery" image of techdeth. Purposefully driven with stellar technicality. Awesome.
33. Vomitory - Opus Mortis VIII
Death // Sickening. And by that, I obviously mean sickeningly grandiose. Duh.
34. Anaal Nathrakh - Passion
Blackened Grindcore // The psycho Brits are back with their latest offering, injecting more melodies into their "music" while retaining all the madness that has been part of their definition. "Passion" WILL drive you mad, in a sadistically pleasurable way.
35. Gigan - Quasi-Hallucinogenic Sonic Landscapes
Technical Death/Grindcore // Wtf is this I am listening to?! Absolute madness! That is not to say, though, that it's all over the place. Incredibly sophisticated if you put in a good listen.
36. Vektor - Outer Isolation
Technical Thrash // No shortage of ammunition; super-technical riffs along with the frenzied yet precise drumming makes Outer Isolation THE thrash album of the year as far as I am concerned.
37. Polkadot Cadaver - Sex Offender
Alternative // Now this is what I'm talking about! Gelling catchiness with a totally unorthodox approach properly is always a sure shot recipe to success. If you're in need of some crrraaaaiiizzzaaayyyy in your life, go for this one at once.
38. Beyond Creation - The Aura
Technical/Progressive Death // Oh, Canada, how do you do it? Really. How? This album just oozes brilliance, from the fine bass work to the smooth-as-silk approach of the music itself. Exceptional.
39. Wolves In The Throne Room - Celestial Lineage
Atmospheric Black // For someone who's notoriously indifferent to any form of black metal, Celestial Linage came as an "eye-opener" of sorts. Simply majestic.
40. Mournful Congregation - The Book Of Kings
Funeral Doom // It's albums like this that make sure you never run out of anti-depressants. Absolutely soul-crushing.
41. SubRosa - No Help For The Mighty Ones
Sludge/Doom // Just a bowl of thick, delectable sludge to be had here. Exceptionally catchy yet brooding, this album is more than enough to tingle your taste buds favorably.
42. Havok - Time Is Up
Thrash // Straight up, in-your-face thrash to uppercut your face and then stomp you into submission.
43. Nervecell - Psychogenocide
Deathrash // These desert scorpions have a lot of potency in their music. What?! Don't believe me?! Check out this one and make it out alive!
44. Hate Eternal - Phoenix Amongst The Ashes
Brutal Death // As aptly described by a friend, "absolutely crushing!" Violent, angry, volatile; this is brutal death at its archetypical best. A special thanks to Krieg for the tip!
45. Symbolic - Scarvest
Melodeath // Pretty gutsy effort, I have to say. One of the finer melodeath albums this year. Standouts are above-average technical writing and some throughly enjoyable catchiness.
46. Protest The Hero - Scurrilous
Progressive Metalcore // With a band name like that, one cannot help but be optimistic, but it's another thing altogether to live up to it. This one did, thankfully. Great album.
47. Black Sun Aeon - Blacklight Deliverance
Melodic Death-Doom // My first contact with Saukkonen's one-man project, and I like what I hear; aims right at the heart, where solitude dwells.
48. Three - The Ghost You Gave To Me
Progressive Rock // Delicious, like chocolate sundae. If in mood of some unique prog rock with edgy vocals, this is the album to explore.
49. Amorphis - The Beginning Of Times
Folk-influenced Heavy // The new Amorphis is the musical equivalent of Kinder Surprise. Sugarcoated with catchiness and melodies, the new record is downright addictive, much like its chocolate counterpart. The female vocals are seductive to the ears.
50. Memories Of Machines - Warm Winter
Progressive/Art Rock // Found this one completely by accident, but boy o' boy was this one a surprise! Elegant and mezmerizing; if you're a fan of prog rock, get this one as if your life depends on it.
51. Paul Wardingham - Assimilate Regenerate
Electro/Industrial Progressive Instrumental // How come I never heard of this guy before? A really high-quality instrumental album, this, mostly centred around futuristic themes...reminds me distantly of Scar Symmetry without the voice input, but oh well, this one is truly a great surprise.
52. Decapitated - Carnival Is Forever
Technical Death // A new Decapitated, with a revamped line-up, but that doesn't mean they don't kick ass anymore! Riffs after pummeling riffs supported by the bludgeoning behind the drum kit, this album is worthy of bearing the Decapitated name. Relieved, and at the same time, satisfied at the outcome.
53. Deafheaven - Roads To Judah
Shoegaze Black // Let's just say that even in purgatory, you won't be cleansed off it's listening experience. Most punishing, but one for masochists to delight on.
54. Revocation - Chaos Of Forms
Technical Deathrash // Some ballsy, uncompromising techdethrash to cleanse your ears off with, mufuhz.
55. Born Of Osiris - The Discovery
Progressive Deathcore // Gorgeous cover, and music almost on par to match. Forget the "core" tag, and let the music do the talking.
56. Pain - You Only Live Twice
Industrial Gothic // Yeah, yeah, you only live twice and all that, so put it into good use and listen to this album. Above expectations, and how.
57. Archspire - All Shall Align
Technical Death // Too much of no holds barred technical craziness is never enough, is it?
58. Novembers Doom - Aphotic
Melodic Death-Doom // I'd been meaning to check out Novembers Doom for a while and, with this being the introductory album, I can't say I'm disappointed. Aggression and melodic frailty entwine together to produce an album that's laden with emotions. Marvel at it, in joyous rapture.
59. Mastodon - The Hunter
Stoner // Proves that you don't need gimmicks to sustain quality. Stripped-down and simplistic, this one's a fun album for all you jolly good fellows.
60. Ghost Brigade - Until Fear No Longer Defines Us
Atmospheric Sludge // Living up to the standards of Isolation Songs was always going to be an uphill task, and so it is unsurprising to see the follow-up not quite on par with its predecessor. On its own, though, it stands its ground well and is unquestionably one of the better releases of this year.
61. Machine Head - Unto The Locust
Thrash // Machine Head are taking themselves more seriously, it seems. A solid follow-up to The Blackening, and another welcome step in the right path.
62. Devin Townsend - Deconstruction
Experimental Progressive // Another wacky concoction from the former skullet master; contains all the trademark Devin characteristics, and more; if you like your weirdness with a dash of awesome, Deconstruction is not one to miss out on. All hail cheeseburger!
63. Dream Theater - A Dramatic Turn Of Events
Progressive // Portnoy or no Portnoy, Dream Theater still have enough fuel left in the tank. Like the veterans they are, they deliver yet another proggy delight that can't be taken lightly.
64. Draconian - A Rose For The Apocalypse
Gothic // Draconian continue from where they left off last time, shedding much of their doomish sound and opting for something cleaner, more accessible. Hats off to them for successfully implementing the formula, though. Good album which is sure to keep the fans happy, while attracting newer ones.
65. Gothminister - Anima Inferna
Industrial Gothic // Lying', cheatin', stealin'; that's what the ministry of our times are all about, right? Maybe if they didn't possess the charisma and catchiness of ze Gothminister, we could've given them the boot. Not in this case, unfortunately. Shit's addictive.
66. Benighted - Asylum Cave
Grindcore-influenced Brutal Death // Hide yo wifes, hide yo kids, the French lunatics are back with their latest! This one's a ruthless assault on your brainwaves, so be warned: prepare to get mindfucked, in the best possible way.
67. Wormrot - Dirge
Grindcore // A pocket-sized explosive device, this. Ideal for "Show 'em the finger, then immediately follow that up with a polite nod" moments. Ah, fuck yes.
68. Thulcandra - Under A Frozen Sun
Melodic Black // Dissection imitations are always welcome in my book. Too close for comfort at times, but a solid effort nonetheless.
69. Origin - Entity
Technical Death // Just a solid slab of ear-bleeding techdeth that only Origin know how to deliver. Nothing more, nothing less.
70. Shining - VII - Född Förlorare
Depressive Black // Is there "light" at the end of the tunnel after all? Or is this just another dark chapter in Shining's legacy? You decide.
71. Fen - Epoch
Atmospheric Black // Even though I don't venture much into any forms of black metal, this is one of those rare exceptions that I enjoyed highly. The surreal, bleak atmosphere it invokes is truly noteworthy. Pick this one up asap.
72. Pain Of Salvation - Road Salt Two
Progressive Rock // A fine continuation of the Road Salt saga. Pain of Salvation can do no wrong, it seems. Wonderfully crafted album.
73. Before The Dawn - Deathstar Rising
Melodeath // Yet another solid effort by Before the Dawn. A largely fulfilling blend of well-focused melodeath with a touch of gothic subtlety at show here. The perfect soundtrack for winter, methinks.
74. The Human Abstract - Digital Veil
Progressive Metalcore // Metalcore, of the better kind. Radiates ridiculously complex structures and a sophistication that has eluded others from the aforementioned genre. Highly recommended.
75. Detonation - Reprisal
Thrash-influenced Melodeath // An angry Detonation is an awesome Detonation. No need to delve further.
76. Uneven Structure - Februus
Ambient Progressive // The word that best fits its description is "Djentle". Mathy passages enshrouded by a cloud of serene ambience that grips our attention from start to finish. Very nice.
77. Tesseract - One
Progressive // A band that is starting to turn heads with their brand of music, and deservedly so. Ethereal, soothing, relaxing; this one's perfect for calming your jittery nerves.
78. Primordial - Redemption At The Puritan's Hand
Black Folk // Witness the uprise, as Primordial return, hoarser, angrier and, most importantly, a shade blacker than ever before...
79. Suidakra - Book Of Dowth
Folk-influenced Melodeath // Eluveitie? Who needs 'em? Suidakra is the name you're looking for when in need of some balanced, well-blended melodeath/folk combo. Furor Celtica!
80. Neuraxis - Asylon
Technical Death // Assembled in Canada, so you know what to expect; lots of kickass techdeth with a lifespan that's going to outlast yours. Guaran-damn-teed.
81. Noctem - Oblivion
Blackened Death // These brutes are hellbent on making your ears suffer with their overpowering brand of filth-laden blackened death, which is not necessarily a bad thing, mind you.
82. Cipher System - Communicate The Storms
Melodeath // Catchy, contagious guitarworks in the vein of Soilwork has my heart leaping in joy. Modern melodeath done right.
83. Myrath - Tales Of The Sands
Progressive // Yet another prog special, embodying the heart of Sahara. The oriental parts give this one a unique identity that is sure to please hearts along the way.
84. Desolate - The Invisible Insurrection
Ambient Dub // Yes. Dub. In Metalstorm. Bite me.
85. KMFDM - WTF?!
Industrial // Put on your dancing pajamas coz here comes KMFDM with some new tunes to dance yourself silly with! Seriously people, WTF?! Get this one. NOW.
86. MyGrain - Mygrain
Melodeath // On paper, the mixture of melodeath with power influences might look like a bad idea, but these guys actually pull it off; recommended to all those who like to indulge in sugar-coated, keyboard-heavy melodic death with a modern-esque edge.

281. Spawn From Deceit - At Least We Did Care
Grindcore
282. A Million Dead Birds Laughing - Force Fed Enlightenment
Grindcore/Technical Death
283. Amon Amarth - Surtur Rising
Melodeath // The gen-amoric as hell viking troopers do what they do best, play to their strengths and keep it safe and simple. Some great tracks, some boring ones; here's hoping Amarth push some boundaries in their next one.
284. Arch Enemy - Khaos Legions
Melodeath // Some stellar guitarwork, some solid drumming...that's it, really. Meh.
285. In Flames - Sounds Of A Playground Fading
Melodeath // Too many fillers drag it down to mediocre obscurity. A classic "What could've been..." case at hand here.
286. Toxic Holocaust - Conjure And Command
Blackened Thrash // Never understood what the big hype surrounding them was about. Judging from this album, I guess it's safe to say that I never will. Insanely... underwhelming.
287. Omega Lithium - Kinetik
Industrial/Gothic // A most disappointing follow-up. Apart from the title track, nothing really stuck for me. Inconsistency-riddled album.
288. Children Of Bodom - Relentless Reckless Forever
Power-influenced Melodeath // The once mighty Bodom is going down the drain, it seems. Handful of neat riffs here and there, but nothing of substance to brag about.
289. Trivium - In Waves
Thrash-influenced Metalcore // Shogun had character. This one doesn't. Gosh, how I'm beginning to despise them with every living cell of my body...
290. Inevitable End - The Oculus
Progressive Grindcore // @ the vocalist : Would you please do the world a favor and just SHUT THE FUCK UP?! Thank you. -_-
291. Believer - Transhuman
Progressive Thrash // Lacklustre and disconcerting. The vocals, in particular, are so abysmal that it'd be better to put on some plugs to escape the ear rape. Ugh.
292. Morbid Angel - Illud Divinum Insanus
Industrial/Experimental Death // The horror, the horror...okay, melodrama aside, this album sucks. As in REALLY sucks. Listen to it "for teh lulz", or mark it with your territorial piss. Your choice.
293. The Browning - Burn This World
Trancecore // What is this I don't even...
294. Queensrÿche - Dedicated To Chaos
Pop-influenced Hard Rock // Way to troll everybody with this stinking pile of horse manure. Seriously, what gives?
295. Metallica - Lulu

In a way, yes. I still enjoy some of them (Amon Amarth, In Flames for example), but yeah overall they're pretty much disappointing.
And well, words cannot describe my hatred for Lulu, so I figured the heck with that, I'll just illustrate it.

Awesome album. And hell, it's not even ranked at that position. Definitely will be going even more upwards.

Don't know if I'll like it. Heavy-Power doesn't sound all too enticing. I'll give it a shot, regardless.

Saxon ain't really Heavy Power. Just Heavy, more in the veins of Accept and Judas Priest.

Ah, I see. Not a huge fan of Heavy but what the heck... will check them out soon. Thanks.

Seeing Toxic Holocaust at the bottom has utterly killed my faith in this list.
It's one of the best Thrash albums of the year right with Warbringer's Worlds Torn Asunder, Skeletonwitch's Forever Abomination and Vektor's Outer Isolation.

Meh. I found them really underwhelming. Both of the other thrash albums (Skeletonwitch and Warbringer) were of much higher quality, in my opinion.
Vektor is already a standout in the list.
strade - 02.01.2012 at 03:08
Yeah, the Toxic Holocaust album isn't good at all. Most modern thrash isn't, though, so no real surprise there. Vektor, Antichrist, Havok (to an extent) and (newer) Helstar are definitely exceptions however.

Enjoyable to see your perspective on such a variety of music.

I have to think that the only reason Vengeful's "Vengeful" isn't on this list is you haven't yet heard it.

It's atmospheric black metal infused with flamenco, acoustic elements.
And you should venture into atmospheric black metal. It is a genre where the vndergrovnd is very strong.

I love it how even Itch Guard managed to find its way to my list. A true indication that my list has gone... global.
EMols86 - 07.03.2013 at 23:39
This list is insane! In a good way that is.

That being said, there are a lot of great albums to be found here, although the majority is unknown to me. I'll be following this list every now and then if I need more new music.

However, I might remove my +1 if you don't remove Lulu!

Ah, good old '11. I was at my prime and my zeal for discovering as much "new" music as I could was at it's zenith. Thank you for the kind words.
Lulu is staying, unfortunately. People need to be notified that there are evils far beyond the scope of imagination, in reality itself. :|
