My Top For 2011

Thumbs up: +1
The top 10 is more or less set so far, I'm still listening to many albums from the rest of the pack plus some not on the list so it is most likely going to change. Although, I don't believe Peste Noire will be taken out the first spot.

1. Peste Noire - L'Ordure à L'état Pur (When a band takes Black Metal to uncharted territories and does it well, you end up with a masterpiece.)
2. Devin Townsend - Deconstruction (I'm not familiar with his work, but this album reminds of Peste Noire's by its creativity and ability to surprise and please.)
3. Lifelover - Sjukdom (Catchy, dark and their last one. It got mixed reviews, I find it very entertaining, from start to finish.)
4. Moonsorrow - Varjoina Kuljemme Kuolleiden Maassa (The Finnish release an album that can be described as atmospheric/folk. No Kylaan Paassa here, a great album nonetheless.)
5. Taake - Noregs Vaapen (After an excellent self titled, Taake had a tough task ahead with the new release...Mission accomplished.)
6. Craft - Void (The long awaited album from those Swedish misanthropes is finally out. More complex than the previous one, it still delivers pure hateful Black Metal, nothing less.)
7. Vader - Welcome To The Morbid Reich (Veterans from the Polish Death Metal scene, they put out one of their best albums without a doubt.)
8. Arafel - For Battles Once Fought (From Israel, those guys mix Slavonic Folk with Black Metal/Death Metal/Thrash...A very interesting release and great musicianship.)
9. Fleshgod Apocalypse - Agony (Mixing Death Metal and classical is not new, but doing it well can be tricky, those guys pulled it out nicely on their newest album.)
10. Shining - VII - Född Förlorare (After a disappointing VI, the newest album from the depressed Swedish provided me with an agreable surprise. Too short to get any higher on my list.)
11. Demonaz - March Of The Norse (I would describe this one as a mix between Viking area Bathory and At The Heart Of Winter. A solid first album by the Norwegian veteran.)
12. Kroda - Schwarzpfad
13. Aenaon - Cendres Et Sang
14. Septicflesh - The Great Mass
15. Vreid - V
16. Sarke - Oldarhian
17. Rotten Sound - Cursed
18. Wolves In The Throne Room - Celestial Lineage
19. Burzum - Fallen
20. Einherjer - Norrøn
21. Falkenbach - Tiurida
22. Kampfar - Mare
23. Arkona - Slovo
24. Morbid Angel - Illud Divinum Insanus (This one is most likely going to remain at the bottom.)

Currently listening to Septic Flesh, Obscura and Omnium Gatherum. Also planning on giving Blut Aus Nord's first two album of the 777 trilogy a listen.

Not a bad list thus far... The definitions are a nice touch too. Keep it up.

That's funny, to me this is a list of everything that's a bit rubbish this year (apart from Wolves and Vader) =P Sorry Troy and psychofrench...

You're just upset because there's no ambient/drone/noise/experimental black metal. >>

It is admittedly lacking in those wonderful spheres of music but it also look like to me all those albums which are kinda in vogue at the moment but not really anything special. Or just plain pants or letdowns.

I was just happy to come across a list that wasn't "top 5 'band x' albums" or "best power metal albums of 2011".

I was just happy to come across a list that wasn't "top 5 'band x' albums" or "best power metal albums of 2011".

The lists thing has become a bit ridiculous and pointless. Most of the top year ones look more or less the same and variations on the same bands.

Well, I didn't call best of 2011 for a reason, it's more of a reflection of my personal taste and like most lists, you can only bring the discussion about the best or the worse. I gave Some bands a listen because they were raking very good reviews, like Obscura and Omnium Gatherum, but none of those really got my attention. I need to move Taake up because it is not disappointing at all. The first 2 are there to stay, truly unique albums that really cross the conventional boundaries of metal.

Wolves isn't really set in the top yet, I haven't got a chance to listen to it with my full attention but so far it's not really pleasing me like some of their previous release. And you are absolutely right about the rubbish part if you think about it, this is what Peste Noire is singing about...Rubbish (Ordure = garbage/rubbish).
