This list was created to help anybody in searching for very nice albums (or artists) if you are into modern melodic bands with dark atmosphere within (but no proper gothic here, just 'melodeath based/derived' music). Albums are filled in order from the best to the worst (according to my honest opinion) and followed by recommended songs (for purpose of giving the albums a try). :-)
Other bands (albums) maybe worth considering:
- Noumena (Absence)
I am going to add more spectacular albums as soon as they appear on the scene! :-)

Well, of course! It would be nice to discuss about my favourite genre(s) and inspire myself as well! The only important thing to mention at the beginning is that I tried to avoid gothic kind of stuff (I want to list it separately later on). I think that not many people are interested in this "dark melody" way of metal music (associated mainly with melodic death metal and it's subvariances as you can see in this particular list)... And that's why I created this list - what do you think about it and do you have any ideas about some other bands/albums?
Just to inform, I would like to make some other lists (in other genres with maybe quite similar focus as I simply orient myself strongly in dark/cold/winterish kind of music if we talk about metal) but need to wait a week per every single one =/ |

Well, first of all, we have very similar preferences, even in the genres that aren't prone to "winterish" feel, I try and seek out bands with coldness or dark emotion in their music and I believe many people are too, so that's why I'm always angry when someone ridicules me for using labels like "melodic metal" and "dark ________ metal". I believe the genre tags of today have become more like guidelines, so really one could make of them something suited for their own perception of music. I mean, I'm not saying we should go out and make up genres, but this "dark and cold" feel has never been recognized. Maybe in Suomi metal - that's the first reference ever to a genre that isn't gothic but operates with similar emotions.
I think you've covered a lot of it with these bands really if we're talking about melodeath/extreme power, I'd perhaps add Noumena's Absence, and maybe two classic albums from Eternal Tears Of Sorrow, A Virgin And A Whore and Chaotic Beauty. Dark Tranquillity also has some dark magic on Projector, but not like most of the bands on this list. But I've found that a lot of Finnish bands, not just in melodeath/similar but in all sorts of genres have business with winterish melodies, themes and the like. |

I cannot say anything against the first paragraph, it corresponds with my opinion very well! Maybe the given name, "suomi metal", has always sounded quite strange to me... But I accepted it - I even have one genre category called "Dark/suomi rock" in my music library
I am REALLY glad to chat with someone like you, really nice to share ideas about these metal music styles (mainly as it's not as "transparent" as trash metal, black metal etc.)!
You've mentioned bands (and albums) that I am really aware of:
Noumenna - Absence: Oh yeah, nice album but could also be mentioned in a category related to folk/viking/pagan metal I think (I am also going to create a list for that). The problem with this band (the reason why I do not have any album in my library) s that their efforts so far have been quite repetative - but I clearly see a lot of potential anyway!
Eternal Tears of Sorrow and Dark Tranquillity - I am really desperated about these two... Tried to get into them for hundred times but I simply haven't liked any simple album that much to remain it on my harddisc... What should I do or listen to in order to improve my opinion on them?
- Dark Tranquillity - lack of variability, songs sounding almost the same (I liked Fiction the most for good keaboards and production that differs from the previous two albums a bit)
- Eternal Tears of Sorrow - Well, I like for example albums like Nightwish - Dark Passion's Play or Epica - Design Your Universe but EToS is maybe too much symphonic and out of my range... I don't know exactly why but I haven't found them that spectacular as so many people did.:noidea:
If you are interested, I can tell you more about other lists I am going to make... It will be in the same scheme - few albums but the strongest ones! It can possibly clarify which bands I am aware of... It will be nice to get some recommendations from you then! |

Yeah, it sounded strange to me too but it sounds totally logical now I've listened to most of the bands in the genre, I only enjoy Charon and Sentenced as a whole, but I do spin some For My Pain, Embraze or early Poisonblack when I'm in a light mood
Hmmm, I do not hear a lot of folk in Absence, just very old In Flames influences, but they do have some playful melodies and vocals that could also be used in the folk scene without being too far off
as for EToS, I'm not much into them myself, for the exact reasons you mentioned, but those two albums I named are pretty cool in making that cold atmosphere
As for Dark Tranquillity, some people do find them a bit samey, that's not the case for me, all of their albums pretty much stood out from the start when I listened to them. If you're not impressed by The Gallery, then the rest of their 90's music isn't for you and Fiction is their best newer album, I agree, and certainly the catchiest. But if you tried a lot of times, maybe you just need to give yourself a few years off and try again, that's what I sometimes do with albums
Oh, please do! I love hearing about those things. |

Oh my god, I have almost finished my answer for you and accidentaly hit a key that brought me in MS Adds site So now I will have to write all the things once again (and as my english is not so good it will take a moment... well, go on!)
To finish off this particular list, I will definitely think about adding the Noumena's Absence (thank you very much for the reminder, really!) As for Etos and DT, I just don't like them enough to let their albums be present in my list - however, I assume that every metalhead already know them well...:)
I have some suggestions about possible lists to create:
1) Modern Cold-Atmospheric Black Metal Albums (stuff from artists like Thulcandra, Totalselfhatred, Coldworld, Astral Winter, Silencer, Dark Funeral, Astral Aeon)
2) Modern Cold-Atmospheric/Doom Metal (Black Sun Aeon, Dawn of Solace, Draconian, Routasielu, Swallow the Sun)
3) Modern Dark/Suomi/Gothic Rock Albums (Charon, For My Pain, Entwine, Shadowgarden, Negative, Sinamore, Theatre of Tragedy, To/Die/For, Unsun, Within Temptation, Sirenia, if I substract bands that are "metal enough" to be present at MS site )
4) Modern Melodic Death Metal Albums (In Flames, In Mourning, Norther, Kalmah, Synestesia, Imperanon, Children of Bodom)
5) Folk/Viking/Pagan Metal (Amon Amarth, Catamenia, Eluveitie, Ensiferum, Equilibrium, Moonsorrow, Wintersun)
These are the possibilities according to my musical taste... I can certainly join some categories into one or reorganise them - as you see the proposals means as I feel these bands correspond with each other ). Do you have any suggestions about them? We can talk about any single band or album if you want (as I only stated proposed bands right now to give you the basic idea)... You can also give me suggestions, I would really like to find some new bands!
One small explanation - the word "modern" means that I just like how metal (and music in general) sounds and is composed nowadays (if I don't take Loudness War in account =/ )... It rarely occurs that some older album appears to be REALLY interesting to me. This is why I added the word in the lists' proposed names. :-) |

Nice ideas to avoid fights with genre purists, I'd suggest renaming "doom" in #2 in "doom-influenced" or "doom hybrids" since doom purists insist that a lot of those bands don't have a lot of things to do with doom. Same is with "gothic rock" part in the #3, since gothic rock is a genre from the 80's which typically has nothing to do with metal, except for the fact that gothic rock merged with various types of metal created gothic metal back in the 90's this article explains the difference between those bands the media calls gothic rock (like Unsun and Within Temptation) but it's a bit long and difficult to read
Some of our interests in music overlap. People tell me Charon is "gay" and Wintersun is cheesy, but I can't listen to prog or "proper" melodeath or heavy metal all the time, I need a bit of variation You've reminded me of Synestesia, since I always wanted to hear some harsh vocals in Finnish, and in fact, I'll go on a mini-melodeath-roll these days! Suggestions will come on each of the separate lists, I promise, I can't think of all the things right now |

No idea how I got here but having read throught the comments I found them to discuss exactly that, which I'm really into music-genre-wise. I applaud the creation of lists like these

For the #2 list I would like to add this awesome, not well known band. Ghost Brigade. "Isolation Songs" being one of my all-time favourite melancholic-doomish-whatever metal albums.
Anyways, this actually inspired me to make a similar list of melodeath/doom/etc albums that I really like listening to atm. |

I am going to create all those lists with another bands I have discovered in recent months :-) It seems like there are people who are interested in similar metal music!
Also, I've updated this particular one with Be'lakor's latest which is finally the first album from them I consider really great! |
