Here's an intensive guide to 100 artists that inhabit the world of drones, ambients, noise and all the tiny variations within and between, both metal and beyond. One release per artist (aside from a few collaborations which I felt were of high quality and worthy of being mentioned). This is the world in which I am happiest, when structure is little more than a dot on the horizon of alien landscapes. This is where the mind drifts and consciousness and music become intertwined.
For those of you that have Spotify a large majority of these artists can be found on there. I've made two playlists incorporating them. The more drone and dark ambient oriented ones can be found HERE and the noisier ones HERE.

Along with that... check out Hlidolf, it's by the same dude from Hjarnidaudi but Hlidolf was actually first.
I know that Hjarnidaudi's debut is one of his favorite albums of all time. Same with me... one of my nine 10s.
Hell yes, worth checking out. Most of it is probably a bit too disturbing to keep me interested, but I'll check out some titles later. My personal favorites from this list are Barn Owl, Pocahaunted, Earth and Lurker Of Chalice, I think. Certainly some of the more accessible albums listed, too. I prefer Grouper's two previous albums. And I don't think Deaf Center are exactly dark ambient so I won't mention them, even though their style is more my cup of tea.
I should make a "Floating In The White - A Guide To Ambient And Modern Composition" to combat all this dark and dreary stuff, but that wouldn't fit the concept of a metal forum. Ambient is best served beautiful, man.

I tend to agree about Deaf Center not necessarily being dark ambient (though it's certainly a constituent in their sound), it was just convenient for me to put them under that umbrella for the purposes of this list. I think they sit quite well here though.
I really didn't expect to see some list related to dark ambient in this site. There are so many hidden gems. Abandoned Place for example is not well known; I'm glad to see it included there as well. I feel Grouper is way too dreamy for this list, though. Maybe you'd like to check out Lacus Somniorum, E.V.P. and Beneath The Lake.

I more often than not preffer my ambient to hit me hard in the stomach and to force me to sit in a corner terrified. I feel most alive while listening to music that makes me feel like I'm staring death right in the eyes.
Damn Abruptum's latest album really grew on me....
I stumbled on this exceptional droning/psychedelic doom band the other day which I will have to squeeze onto this list at some point. Their sound is awesome and expansive.
Just realised a riff from this song sounds remarkably like one from The Bees Made Honey... (Omens and Portents I: The Driver, to be exact)

If you like Barn Owl, you should check out Expo '70, Ulaan Khol and Asva (the album What You Don't Know Is Frontier), at least. I assume you know Earth, Boris, Nadja, etc. For a similar atmosphere and sound with more shape and songwriting, check out psych folk/droners like Ilyas Ahmed, Forest Swords and Mount Eerie. I imagine you could also like Heroin And Your Veins, though it's probably a little lighter and more post-rock. Kinda like Bohren & der Club of Gore without the jazz, in fact.
That's all I can think of, off the top of my head and browsing my playlists. I imagine some Last.fm investigation might yield more results.
