Thumbs up: +14
This is a list of almost every album/EP/demo I listened to from 2012. It is primarily composed of the better albums I listened to as I tend to forget about bad albums (and rightfully so).

NOTE: Most of these ratings don't stand anymore.

How many times you listened to each?

Mostly twice, the one's above 7.5 are more like 4 or 5. The one's closer to the bottom are more like 1, it's pretty easy to tell if an album is bad.

Lol why is Lunar Aurora so low? I found it worth an 8 at least.

I've never liked Lunar Aurora. I was never able to get into them, something about their music just bored me intensely

Rating Eclipse with a 3.5 is a crime against humanity.
IronAngel - 18.08.2012 at 01:21
Well, since you asked for recommendations: Pike need more love. Their debut LP To Cross the Great Divide is this interesting blend of melodic doom with a bit of sludge and pretty catchy riffs and goes all over the place in terms of tempo. The vocals are shouted and mostly clean, with the best comparison being Primordial or older Anathema. It's a really unique album and almost nobody seems to have picked up on it, so there we go!

There's more in my 2012 list, but it's mostly non-metal and you seem to feature most of my favorite metal albums of the year already.

Well, since you asked for recommendations: Pike need more love. Their debut LP To Cross the Great Divide is this interesting blend of melodic doom with a bit of sludge and pretty catchy riffs and goes all over the place in terms of tempo. The vocals are shouted and mostly clean, with the best comparison being Primordial or older Katatonia. It's a really unique album and almost nobody seems to have picked up on it, so there we go!

You've intrigued me, i will have to check this out.

Oops! I mean to write older Anathema, not older Katatonia.

It's on Spotify if you use it, but also here:

I listened to it, and it sounded really great for the most part. The thing that kind of ruined it for me was the vocals. The singer couldn't seem to stay on pitch a lot of the time. That didn't really ruin the listen for me though, because of the long instrumental breaks. A 7.3 from me.

I have no clue where i found that Abest demo, but goddamn it is fine.
And i'll try listening to Internal Impact again, but i'm not sure my opinion will change

Lawl, I just noticed you put my demo in there. Dude, it can't be better than Drudkh and Dodecahedron.
Thanks anyway. Very much.

Well Drudkh's was decent-ish, but overall incredibly boring, and Dodecahedron's release was a soulless conglomeration of dissonant technical wankery, which in essence, fucking bored me to death. Your demo was short sweet and to the point. As a musician, you aren't Drudkh obviously, but i actually did enjoy your little demo (at least it wasn't Deadwood). [edit] i moved yours down a little after listening to it again, it's now on the same level as Drudkh and Dodecahedron

Haha, many thanks (and take it easy on Deadwood, Tanner's not been playing for a long time ).

When that was released that was 3 months of playing electric guitar :/

My New Ep will be better, A LOT better.

I already liked that Myrskyy thing, so yeah, you have clearly improved

Oh damn, I decided to give Ancestors a shot. There's so much generic stoner crunch out there that I wasn't very enthusiastic. The first track was quite OK, but then the second one came on. Aaah what the fuck is this? It was really good. I'd label it progressive rock over, or at least as much as, stoner metal. It gets a little slow after the halfway mark, but not disruptively so.

Was gonna recommend the new Eagle Twin but I see you already have it there. Just got my hands on it.

I got bored of adding genres, so most of them will probably turn into nonsense

Thanks for 'featuring' M-81 anyway.
Also add Poo to the description of Gnaw Their Tongues.

Meshuggah - Koloss lower than Whitechapel self-titled, Beneath the Massacre and Lamb of God?!? I know its not quite the same as Nothing or Chaosphere but still, it was a good effort.

I've actually never liked Meshuggah so it's not really fair of me to put it on this list :/

I could recommend Khors - Wisdom Of Centuries, although it is black metal.

Sorry but Indesinence on place number 5? You got to be kidding. In extreme doom alone there were four or five albums better. It's a gopod album but nothing great. It's a pure repetition of what they have done before

Nah, best extreme doom record this year for sure. They stepped up their sound and songwriting significantly on the new one Evoken ballsed up the production, Worship were just a bit underwhelming so they're out.

Anhedonist were far better as were Faustcoven, even Faal with their Esoteric sound. Indesinence were just like on their previous album, good but that's it. Live they are so mych better than on album where they just don't know when to stop. Worship were on the same ball as Doooom, so I guess you only like their none studio albums

I liked Dooom because it was the first album of their sound. The new one is just average f-doom replication to me. Nothing to go crazy about unless you like hearing the same thing again only not quite as well done.

Faal was indeed very good, definitely a contender, but Indesinence wins out for me. Anhedonist was ok, enjoyable enough and Faustcoven I haven't heard.

Rosemount Hill demo?

I kid, but I definately agree with most of the stuff here to some extent. Checking out some of teh BM bands that aren't on MS as we speak.

Well Marcel seems to think differently, that old bastard
And thanks for that. I was trying to decide which doom album I thought was best so I revisited all of the highlights throughout the year and Indesinence's really stood out. I know Marcel thinks Worship kicks the ass of everything else, but I personally found that album to get pretty old pretty fast, a good album nonetheless, but no where near the same replay value as Indesinence (or a few others for that matter).

edit: Oh and Elysian Blaze is a very close runner up for doom AOTY from me

Well you know Marcel

Yeah I need to have a revisit of quite a few albums. That's the problem with best-of lists, much of the time only recently released stuff makes it high up as stuff released in January etc. seems soooo far away and often forgotten altogether.

I've been meaning to go through this thing and check to make sure the ratings still stand, but that would take so damn long. I'm sure a few of these ratings would change if I did that, but not drastically enough for it to be entirely worth it
