A lot of bands have great debut albums. Obviously this list is just a fraction of all the great debut albums out there, but it's a start. I'll keep expanding this list continuously, so all suggestions are welcome (granted they are featured on MS). All the albums here are ranked according to genre and then alphabetically. If a certain album belongs to the (in your opinion) wrong genre, then definitely let me know.

When searching albums of a certain genre, just press "Ctrl + F" and then enter the genre you're looking for. For example, when looking for death metal albums, simply enter "[death]" after you pressed "Ctrl + F" and you'll be at the right place in no time, so it works perfectly.

LeKiwi and mz also gave a ton of suggestions of which I still have to check most albums out.

I have new suggestions for you =p. Not sure if I haven't suggested them before:

For you avantgarde section:
Devil Doll
Dog Fashion Disco
Polkadot Cadaver
Fleurety

Also, it seems that you are, like me, a sludge noob. I like these bands (listened to some of these just last week for the first time):
Subrosa
Khanate
Primitive Man
Obscure Sphinx
Also, Flourishing is really good sludge tech death.

Other suggestions:
Zaraza
Svartidauði
Wormphlegm
Jesu
Battle Of Mice
Beyond Creation
Chaos Echœs
Code
Desolate Shrine
Agruss
And P.H.O.B.O.S of course =p
mz - 10.12.2013 at 10:16
You can also make this list a lot better by eliminating the genres I don't like
Dark†SymphonY - 10.12.2013 at 21:26
More avantgarde stuff for you Erika,
Akphaezya - Anthology II: Links From The Dead Trinity
Polkadot Cadaver - Purgatory Dance Party

You can also check out the debuts from bands on my Avantgarde list too as you got most of the albums I would have suggested.

Like having 200+ suggestions isn't more than enough you decide to drive me even more nuts and recommend a ton more.

Seriously though, I will at least check out those avantgarde and sludge debuts as those sections are pathetic(ally small) right now.

And why do you keep suggesting Beyond Creation? I told you 10 times already it's on this list for many, many months.

Nah, I'm trying to do the opposite: having more variety in this list. Btw, which genres don't you like?

well I told you that I might have suggested some of them before. This turned out to be true for Beyond Creation case.
Also, I was just joking about that elimination thing obviously but if you ever wanted to take my advice seriously, you should delete your power and gothic metal section

Haha fair enough then.

And delete my gothic metal section? That will never happen! Too many favourites of mine there. Hell, I think it's way too small actually.

I know that you persoannly don't like their "No help..." and also agree that their debut is weaker than that one. No worries that you consider the debut a bad album.
Also, you've heard a shitload of sludge and probably have higher standards than me when it comes to this genre. I don't deny that I probably get impressed too easily.
Apothecary - 14.12.2013 at 01:06
Knowing you're almost as big a black metal nerd as I am, I'm surprised you don't have this one yet. Granted, he released a bunch of demos beforehand, but this is the official debut.

Haha, there's some truth in that I guess, but I think you're definitely the bigger BM nerd.

To be totally honest, I listened a bit to that debut and weirdly enough I didn't like it a whole lot. Maybe I wasn't in the mood for it back then... or it was Marcel who influenced me by saying that debut is "extremely generic". Anyway, will listen to the album again and then decide whether to add it or not.

Compared to some of the other Leviathan albums, yeah, it is. Wrest's best is easily Massive Conspiracy Against All Life, I think, because of the great ambient touch of it. But The Tenth Sub Level is still pretty great in itself.

Seeing as this isn't a purely metal debut list...

the best ever debut album isn't on it...

Van Halen - Van Halen

Added. Yes, I don't like it but that album is a classic so I decided it deserves a place here.

I listened to it again and while I'm totally not blown away by it (way too long of an album as well... I would've settled with 45 minutes but instead it's 71 minutes ), I liked it more than the first time and so decided to add it after all.

Yeah, but the difference is that I don't hate Van Halen at all (just not my cup of tea), while I do "hate" Guns N' Roses. So I don't think I'll add this one.

Please recommend other classic albums if you want them added. I've become more flexible in that sense, so I'm open to most suggestions.

You only have one sludge album? That's shameful.

Redeem yourself by adding these:
High On Fire - The Art Of Self-Defense
Down - NOLA
Coffinworm - When All Became None
Eibon - Entering Darkness
Eyehategod - In The Name Of Suffering
Buzz*oven - To A Frown

Haha well, what can I say other than that I simply am not a Sludge fan? But fair enough, I will look into your suggestions.

That being said, there's more sludge, just not under the "sludge" section. I can't have the same album twice on the list now, can I? For example, I had Dragged Into Sunlight in that section until Joe told me they're actually more death metal. I also have Regarde Les Hommes Tomber, Ortega and Mastodon here.

Dude, I didn't forget about them you know. Still have to listen to the whole album though. I really liked that song you linked (and a few others as well), even though the music is incredibly soft.

You're wrong about the genre though... I honestly don't see how you can call them atmospheric, neoclassical, post, folk and doom and NOT mention gothic, which is from what I've heard a huge part of the music. So this album will almost certainly be under the "Gothic" section in this list.

My first thoughts were that its not very metal, but there are a few moments on the album that are gothic and doomy, but most of it is neoclassical and atmospheric music.
I'm also trying to attempt to upload the full album to youtube as well. As its around 80 mins long, its taking a long time.

Ah I see. Maybe it's just that one track that sounded pretty gothic then... anyway, it would be great if you'd upload the album, seeing as (like you said) many tracks aren't on Youtube.

No, I don't like (European) power metal at all. But don't worry, if an album doesn't totally get on my nerves I'm inclined to add it to this list.

So I will look into your suggestion.

Not sure if it belongs on this list. Then again, I also have extremely mellow stuff such as King Crimson on here, so why not add Led Zeppelin as well? Under which section would you put them? Heavy, progressive, hard rock (not yet as a genre here)?

Well, since you already have a category for heavy metal and not one for hard rock I'd say heavy
Alex Fenger - 10.04.2014 at 20:11
Goddamn this list is long. I'm really glad you added genre categorizing, it was getting way too cluttered before that. Simple change made the list quite a bit better (now if only you would add non-MS albums)

It certainly could be shortened quite a bit (there's about 75+ albums I would remove), but I still think it's a nice way to introduce people to random bands.
Edit: Make that 150+ albums I disagree with, and I've heard nearly all of them

I know it's really long and I haven't added albums for months now. The reason is that I got kind of bored with lists in general, or at least updating them. I agree that categorizing them into main genres is better. I won't add non-MS bands for two reasons: 1. as I said I got bored with updating lists , 2. even with only MS featured bands it's already a very long list.

This is a relatively objective list (aside from my obvious preference for some genres, indicated by the amount of albums of those genres), so I obviously won't remove albums just because you disagree with them. Well, if you can give me a good reason why a certain album shouldn't be here, I'd consider removing it. But 150 albums, or even 75? No way.

And as I told you before: you're exaggerating quite a bit with that statement, because around 350 debuts is hardly "pretty much every debut album out there". Yes, it might be too long for some people, but that's one of the reasons I categorized them into different genres.

Well, I can remember liking it enough to put it here, not to mention quite a few people kept recommending it, so I don't see the harm in including it. Not to mention the category Power Metal is damn tiny as it is, so for now I'm keeping it on the list.

How can a list like this be objective at all? If this was solely influenced by popular opinion as to what's a great debut, you'd have to include every pop album ever. I know that's a bit of an exaggeration, but I really can't see how this is objective? If you could explain that to me I'd actually be interested in seeing how you go about actually adding an album in an "objective" manner.
