A lot of bands have great debut albums. Obviously this list is just a fraction of all the great debut albums out there, but it's a start. I'll keep expanding this list continuously, so all suggestions are welcome (granted they are featured on MS). All the albums here are ranked according to genre and then alphabetically. If a certain album belongs to the (in your opinion) wrong genre, then definitely let me know.

When searching albums of a certain genre, just press "Ctrl + F" and then enter the genre you're looking for. For example, when looking for death metal albums, simply enter "[death]" after you pressed "Ctrl + F" and you'll be at the right place in no time, so it works perfectly.

*Yawn* list is *yawn* too long *yawn*.

And yet you have given a thumbs up to lists such as strade's 2012 list (200+ albums), Guib's thrash list (250+ albums) and MechanisT's 2011 list (about as long as this one, so 300+ albums). And those are year-lists and a specific list while this one is a general list with albums from many different genres and many different years. So in that sense this one could actually be considered less boring. Oh, and I can assure you that this list will keep growing.

yeah Arjen is one hell of a kind. Though I'll never forgive him for covering The Alan Parson's Project masterpiece "Some Other Time", I like him.

Oh and do you have any news from 40 Watt Sun?

What news from 40 Watt Sun are you talking about? Oh, and I never knew about that cover (but honestly, it doesn't interest me either ).

Trust me, you don't wanna listen to that cover.
I mean, any "recent" news? The last time I heard of them, they were getting ready for another gig in London on October 11th. Still nothing about a new album.

Haha, now you made a bit curious after all so I might even check that cover out.

I haven't heard any news about them, sadly. While they made a great album, it's still far less great than Warning's Watching From a Distance, at least in my opinion. If you haven't heard that one, then do check it out, it's awesome.

Watching From a Distance

Yeah I checked it out. solid doom stuff.

Such a shame. Walker seemed a little gruffy on his interviews, but I like his "I feel no need to adhere to any formula" attitude.

Yes, i gave my thumbs up for those lists when it was around 50 or something and then i lost my interest later when it piled up to 150+.

I don't know it becomes tiring to just scroll scroll scroll scroll and keep scrolling until it finishes. I believe lists should be restricted to 50 or maximum 100. After that, it becomes too tiring.

it seems I was wrong about the In The Woods... album. It's their second album I was thinking of, which is in a lot of lists unlike the debut.

yet their debut (Heart Of Ages) is so much better than anything they released after that it's not even funny any more.

Ah, that explains it then. I was wondering how you were going to talk yourself out of that one.

All my other lists are equal to or shorter than 75 albums by the way. This one is just pretty damn long and it will keep expanding. Why? Because there are always great debuts to be found. While there are 300+ albums on here, it's still just a fraction of the total amount of great debuts in metal. That being said, seeing as there are lots of doom and black metal albums already (my favourite genres, obviously), I'm now trying to add more of other genres such as (classic) heavy and thrash metal, but also death metal.

Haha, you often seem to be in the minority when it comes to the best album of certain bands. That being said, I'll definitely check out that one. It seems like it's black metal while the following albums are avantgarde post-metal or something.

Your effort is much appreciated. I'm not denying the fact that they're less great debuts available, even if it crosses 500 plus, we shouldn't be surprised with that.

I said only in the context of longevity of any lists that crosses 100 mark, it started losing interest.

Hehe, thanks. Well, I'm taking it easy and won't add 10 debuts each week anymore... now more like 10 debuts each month. So it'll be a while before it reaches the 500 (if at all).

But I get what you're saying about the list length. Have you seen this list before: http://www.metalstorm.net/users/list.php?list_id=2971&page=&message_id=? What an utterly ridiculous list. Genre-lists shouldn't exceed 100 albums if you ask me (sorry Fearmeister ).

Told you so, hahaha. Now my list suddenly doesn't seem that long anymore, does it? Indeed one of the most ridiculous and totally useless lists on MS, if not the most ridiculous/useless list. Also, buber's supposedly "death doom" list (http://www.metalstorm.net/users/list.php?list_id=1447), this list is crap because it features lots of gothic (doom) albums as well) comes to mind and is a great contender for being the worst list on MS, not to mention my own "death doom" list (http://www.metalstorm.net/users/list.php?list_id=3131) is so much better it's not even funny anymore (but sadly it's far from finished yet, so that brings the list down, admittedly).

Seems like a good suggestion judging from the high score here on MS. Will definitely check it out. I always add either 5 or 10 bands at once, so it might be weeks from now until I add it. Oh, and thanks for the +1.

Haha. Yeah, for months I added 10 albums each week, but the last 3 months way less than that (I became less interested), so the rate of adding albums has decreased dramatically.

Anyway, you're right. That album is indeed missing and I'll add it soon, probably.

I updated the list just now. Everything is now ranked according to genre and then alphabetically. Now it's way easier to search for albums of a specific genre.
Marcel Hubregtse - 01.12.2013 at 13:45
Sadness avantgarde?

oh yeah and there isn't anything avantgarde about Celtic Frost - To Mega Therion either.

Anacrusis - Suffering Hour progressive? Straight up thrash albeit a little more technical than most thrash but certainly not progrssive that one.

And no Megadeth in the thrash list? wtf? Their debut was a lot better than quite a few you did mention.

Thanks for checking the genres... but I really didn't change those genres yesterday. It just is more obvious now because of the new ranking. And even though I think it's an improvement it's way more obvious now how few albums of certain genres I have here. But I thought we agreed on Sadness being avantgarde death doom? Or maybe it's just death doom with avantgarde elements which isn't enough to call them avantgarde. Celtic Frost is apparently being called blackened thrash but MS says they're avantgarde thrash.

Fair enough about Anacrusis, will change that too, even though they are labelled as being progressive thrash here on MS. Also, Megadeth's debut is added. The reason I didn't add it before is because so many people view it as inferior to many other albums of theirs. That being said, I just added it.

Definitely let me know if any other genres are off. Also, notice that I put everything with a "progressive" or "avantgarde" tag under those genres, so a "progressive death" album never falls under the "death" genre. I might change this, but I simply decided to do this because it was already a lot of work re-ranking this list.
Marcel Hubregtse - 01.12.2013 at 14:33
Celtic Frost only became avantagrde with their Into The Pandemonium album
Anacrusis became progressive thrash later on.
Sadness has loads of gothic stuff in that death doom album of theirs nothing avantgarde about it at all.

Check the albums then, I've changed the genres. Have spinned Sadness quite a few times when you posted it on my wall (Facebook) and then we agreed on that album being "avantgarde death doom". For now I'll leave it simply at "death doom" and will decide what it really is when I listen to it again today.

Just listened to it again. Yes, it has gothic in it, but also feels quite avantgarde to me. Totally unlike any album I've ever heard. Calling them "avantgarde gothic death doom" is a bit pushing it though, hahaha. I'll probably just go with gothic death doom though.

Holy shit, I shouldn't have invited you to comment here. Just kidding, thanks for the suggestions.

As is obvious, this list can never be complete because there are always albums missing according to someone, as I already said. But then again, initially I didn't even intended to make a huge list as one year ago it just was 20 albums long and those were my favourite debuts.

I was actually totally not sure where to put that album. Either in the "sludge" or "death" genre, but went with sludge because to me it sounded quite sludgy... disturbing sick album, that one. And now that album falls under the "death" category, the "sludge" section is even more pathetic. I guess Acid Bath is an essential in that genre, but I'm sure there are others, so let me know if that's the case.

The sludge element stems from the dirty guitar tone and feel of it mostly.

For sludge I'm sure there are hundreds of great debuts. Too many to remember from memory to be honest, especially as sludge comes in different forms like hardcore-driven sludge, blackened sludge, extreme sludge etc. Even thrashy sludge.
R'Vannith - 02.12.2013 at 02:05
Nice, you've neatly ordered things here. One suggestion I have is, seeing as your list is quite long, dividing some of the genres into sub-categories (under death you might make a separate melodic death section, for example)
Slim pickings for Power metal debuts... I'll return with some suggestions you may like.

Well, I don't doubt the fact that there are many great sludge debuts. As sludge is pretty far from my comfort zone I'm only really interested in the essentials, like for example Acid Bath's debut. I don't really aim to find a ton of sludge debuts for this list, but I do feel the list needs more than just a couple sludge albums (yes, there's progressive sludge as well on here).

Thanks man. It was hard for me to decide which album belongs to which genre. I eventually decided to just throw everything that had a "progressive" tag in that section, and the same goes for "avantgarde". As you might have noticed, I didn't do the same for "symphonic" and "melodic" stuff. I know it's not consistent that way, but there's so much of those last two it didn't really feel right to me that way.

Anyway, your suggestion might be a good idea although to be honest I can't be bothered right now. I'm just glad I managed to rank the albums like I have them now. So I might do that in the future.

As for power metal debuts, don't worry about me liking them because I probably won't. That being said, I need some non/less-cheesy power metal on here, so I guess non-European power metal would be best then. But I'm totally at a loss when it comes to finding such debuts, so I'm counting on you (and others who feel like they can help).

Well before you entirely give up on the European bands I'll shoot a few your way; first suggestion I have would be the now disbanded Kiuas' debut The Spirit Of Ukko. One of my favourite power metal albums and really original. They steadily declined after that album so it represents the highest point in their discography, a debut they never managed to top.

For something on the folky side, Falconer and Elvenking's debuts are well worth a listen, especially the former (many consider it their best work).

Another is Adagio's debut, comparable to Symphony X (not sure if your into them) but with more of a power metal sound.

You might like Pagan's Mind, their debut Infinity Divine is very strong as far as debuts go.

And I was going to suggest Pyramaze also, but I see they're already here under progressive, which is probably a more fitting genre tag for them honestly.

You also have Helloween there so you'll likely find something to enjoy in Blind Guardian's debut.

Fair enough, I will give them a chance. Will check out at least a couple of songs from each album, or the whole album if I like it enough (which I don't think will happen often). And yeah, I have a couple of "progressive power" debuts here, so there's actually more power metal in the list than you'd think initially, but still not much at all of course. Oh, and I have to say Helloween's debut is one of the few power metal albums that I actually didn't totally hate, hahaha. That being said, I think I highly prefer progressive non-cheesy power over the regular power metal. Anyway, thanks for the suggestions.

Avant-garde suggestions for you:

Mr. Bungle - Mr.Bungle - This one might be too experimental and weird for you
Pin-Up Went Down - 2Unlimited - Same as above, but with female vocals
Stolen Babies - There Be Squabbles Ahead
Ved Buens Ende - Written In Waters
Kayo Dot - Choirs Of The Eye

The first 3 might not be to your tastes though.

Okay, thanks for these suggestions, I appreciate it.

When I'll add albums to this list from now on those will mostly be non-doom and non-black albums because I have a huge amount of those already.

When I dropped that listwhore mass of addition suggestions last week (including Jag Panzer - do not ignore!) I was bearing in mind the general reception they all enjoy[ed] from fans; you might be surprised by taking a look at their ratings. On that note (and Blind G talk above) I should also point out Demons And Wizards & Lost Horizon

And a couple... non-power powerhouses from your neck of the woods, Pestilence and Asphyx... as well as, from a similar time period (or at least half-similar styles), Pan.thy.monium Dream Death and Dreaming Dead... oh, and maybe Acid Witch (perhaps Holy Grail (half-PM)) more DM options: Altar & Vader... Nervecell, Rudra... Wormed? Psycroptic? Vallenfyre?

Sahg (doomy/stoner, not death)
I and Demonaz, and Armageddon... CoB? - more formed by famous/accomplished/seasoned metalheads
Sortilège - old French heavy
old SAmer extreme - Sarcófago, Criminal
various extreme - Deströyer 666, The Haunted, Absu?

edit again - Obtained Enslavement, Enslavement Of Beauty... in case it didn't go w/o saying, I don't have much of an idea if you'll find their sounds appealing (or appalling) :p

You do realize no other person here has suggested more debuts than you, do you? Well, LeKiwi and mz also gave a ton of suggestions of which I still have to check most albums out. But thanks anyway. In about one year I might have added them all.
