A collection of all of my personal favorite black, black/thrash, black/death and black/doom metal. One album per band and in no particular order other than alphabetical. List will be updated semi-regularly so remember to stop by every so often!

The signifies an album that is borderline perfect. Can you find them all?

Check out my other lists!
Death Doom Heavy Thrash

Enjoy!

I think this might be a very helpful list for me. I see a lot of albums I have not heard before!
Erik M. - 29.07.2013 at 00:28
Lots of great stuff on here, so I gave you a . But I'd recommend to limit the amount of albums per band to 3 or so. Your call though, but it would improve the list since even then it would still be huge.

Just did a trim of my list. Removed around 50+ on this list. How's this?

Better.

But did you remove a lot of albums of the same bands or also bands of which you had only 1 album of?

A little bit of both really

Not exactly the type of albums I'd choose for a list like this, but then again I like a bunch of far left-field black metal, so that's not really saying much
Nevertheless, you got some great picks on here. The Goat Of Mendes is by far my favorite Akercocke album, it's cool to see that you picked that over Antichrist or Words That Go Unspoken, Deeds That Go Undone like most people do. Thumbs up on Oranssi Pazuzu, Klabautamann, and Gris too. It's also cool that you picked Paracletus for Deathspell Omega, that album usually has a somewhat "ehhhhhh" vibe around it for not living up to Si Monumentum and Fas, but when you come off of such perfect albums like those, it's almost impossible to do anyway. It's really not that bad an album.

Paracletus is personally my favorite DSO album and is the one I find myself going back to most often though I consider the other two albums to be fantastic as well. That album feels like pure chaos at first listen but is extremely well written the more you dig into it.

Good to see Rivendell in this list. Just discovered them and as you might expect, I love this kind of music. Definitely checking out the other two albums as well, which I expect won't be any less great than the debut.

Added The Crevices Below because psykometal is so nice

Interesting to see that you have given a star to Memoria Vetusta II. I only heard MV I and really like that one (would rate it an 8-8.5 I think), so MV II really is better it seems (according to you).

And even though I'm a huge Summoning fan, I wouldn't give Oath Bound a star (as in 10/10). But then again, all Summoning albums are excellent (except for Lugburz ), so there's not a general consensus about which album is their best... well, actually most would say it's Stronghold, but for me it's Old Mornings Dawn and for you Oath Bound. So yeah, not really a general consensus about this.

MVII is one of the better 'space metal' albums out there imo and it is my favorite BAN record though Works is a very very close second.

Oath Bound is still my favorite Summoning record (Stronghold is #2 and OMD is #3 or #4). Its one of those few albums that I can have on repeat for the rest of eternity and not get bored

Damn man, you weren't kidding about MV II. This stuff is awesome and I might even like it more than MV I and The Work Which Transforms God. Always felt the latter to be bit on the short side and MV II is a truly massive album, so that's a good thing for me. Not jumping to any conclusions now, since I need to spin it more than just once to form a proper opinion on.

Oath Bound is an excellent album, no doubt about that. But compared to Stronghold and OMD it's lacking in some way that I can't quite figure out. Minas Morgul is at the bottom for many people, but I also really like that album. Some melodies on there are some of the best they ever composed and are unparallelled if you ask me. I'm then talking about songs like Morthond for example... that intro alone is stunning to me:

Can never get bored of this song. Hell, it's easily one of my favourite Summoning songs.

Paracletus might be my favorite DSO album, too. For me, time has not been kind on my enjoyment of Si Monumentum. I think Fas is where they truly hit their stride.

I used to hold MV II in such high esteem. But the sound has grown stale to me now. Other than the second to the last song, "Antithesis of the Flesh" (that choir part right at the beginning, especially), it just doesn't do it for me anymore . I have heard MV I a few times and I enjoy it much more. Then again, I dig the early BAN sound more than what followed.

As for Summoning, I have the same passionate feelings. Oath Bound used to be my favorite, so I can understand the author's inclusion. I'm most fond of Let Mortal Heroes Sing Your Fame. They nailed the Summoning formula it utter most perfection, if you ask me. Although with my recent listen of Old Morning's Dawn, it might be just as good, or a close second.

I have to agree. First few spins of MV II were awesome but somehow more spins didn't do it for me, sadly. Have maybe listened to it 6-7 times now and wouldn't label it as awesome, just a very good album and I also prefer MV I to it.

Most of the time I'm pretty good at deciding which albums of a certain band I like more than others but in Summoning's case I'm really at a loss. Even though Old Mornings Dawn is my current favourite by far, I can see this change in the future. I used to love Stronghold but grew a bit bored of it, as I realized it's far less epic than most of their other albums (hence the downgrading to a 9, as albums that eventually interest me less don't deserve a 10). Pathetically I still haven't listened to LMHSYF as I want to buy it and simply didn't have the money to do so in the last 4 months (but now I'm making money and will buy it immediately when ordering my next batch of CD's ). It goes without saying that I'm extremely curious to hear LMHSYF as it's regarded as their best album by many.

I'm in the process of making a new list that's all about non featured bands and you can be damn sure that Nhor is going on it

Did a big change on the readability on my lists. Split each of the pentagram lists into 2, a short and a long one. The short list contains the bands that were previously starred and is a way to make them easily visible. The long list is simply like what the list used to be and is for the crazy motherfuckers who can't get enough music

All the lists (except the omission list) have been changed into this format.
