I know most of the albums on here, and yes some of them are quite underrated and overlooked. Igorrr and Ram-Zet are good avant-garde bands, though I didn't think much of Mortal Love as I thought their music was boring. Gonna keep my eye on this list if your going to update more

Lots of precious stuff to listen to yet so little time...:(
Erik M. - 15.09.2013 at 23:34
Quite a good idea for a list, but some of these aren't overrated or overlooked at all. The best example would be The Work Which Transforms God, which might even be the most popular BAN album of them all, so I don't see why it's on the list. Also, the albums on this list must be good, right? So why do you have Load (Metallica) on it?

Anyway, I do have some suggestions of underrated and/or overlooked albums. Here are the suggestions that are all an 8/10 or higher in my opinion:
- Aarni - Bathos (totally underrated and overlooked, but a gem of an album)
- Akelei - De Zwaarte van het Doorstane (overlooked, but great Dutch atmospheric doom)
- Aquilus - Griseus (overlooked, barely anyone knows this masterpiece)
- Arcturus - Apera Hiems Symfonia (overlooked, since everyone gives credit to The Sham Mirrors or Le Masquerade Infernale)
- Desire - Locus Horrendus - The Night Cries Of A Sullen Soul... (an overlooked masterpiece)
- Dimmu Borgir - Spiritual Black Dimensions (underrated and overlooked... Enthrone Darkness Triumphant is praised into oblivion while this gets often ignored)
- Kauan - Lumikuuro (underrated and overlooked... this debut is fantastic and doesn't get the amount of praise it deserves)
- Moonspell - Sin/Pecado (overlooked, since pretty much every other Moonspell album gets more recognition)
- Paradise Lost - Shades of God (my favourite PL album and it's really underrated and overlooked because of the albums Gothic, Icon and Draconian Times)
- Saturnus - Paradise Belongs to You (most people give either the albums Martyre or Veronica Decides to Die all the praise, while they forget about the debut, which in my opinion is the best album of them all)
- Shape of Despair - Shades Of... (underrated, especially compared to the (in my opinion) inferior Angels of Distress, which is easily the most popular album)
- Summoning - Minas Morgul (the first totally unique Summoning album and most people prefer every other Summoning release to this one, except for of course Lugburz)
- Vordven - Towards the Frozen Stream (some people might be laughing now, since I recommend this album to everyone on the site, as well as spamming it in the shoutbox quite often anyway, this masterpiece is totally overlooked and deserves to be well-known)

That's all the albums I could recommend for now. Lastly I want to say I agree with quite a few albums that are already on this list.
Erik M. - 16.09.2013 at 00:04
How is this list ordened by the way? I'd suggest ranking the albums alphabetically, so it's easier for others to find a certain album.

Why Work Which Transforms God? Because in my opinion its one of the best black metal albums and it has only 100 votes and this album is generally not really that popular on this site. For example Sons Of Northern Darkness by Immortal has 700 votes (Master Of Puppets over 2000). So I just think that more people should discover this album (and this band).

Why Load? This list is very subjective. It has some controversial titles like Load, Untouchables, A Dramatic Turn Of Events, Heritage, etc because I THINK that they are underrated. I like Load. Of course you can hate that album and disagree with me... But thats ok This is my list so I add albums that I like

Why no alphabetic order? Oh come on, don't be so lazy Look at this list - http://www.metalstorm.net/users/list.php?list_id=58 That's my comment

And thanks for suggestions, gonna check them out

Actually, The Work Which Transforms God is very popular as it's on many lists on MS. Lots of people (elites and staff mainly) have that album on their list (including me). I think you should view the albums relatively, meaning that 100 votes isn't necessarily few votes for certain bands (like BAN, in this case). If you compare this album to other BAN albums, it's easily the most popular (aside from maybe the latest few albums, but those are in more lists because of the ridiculous amount of year-lists that are currently on MS ) out of them all. The debut of BAN would fit this list way better in my opinion, but it's your list so your call.

Fair enough about the other albums, as it's indeed your opinion. For Opeth I would've chosen Orchid, which seems to be disliked by many simply because of the bad production but is still better than the majority of Opeth albums (in my opinion).

The most popular list on the site isn't alphabetical either, so what? Again, your call, but seeing as I'm pretty adept at making lists (check them out if you're interested ) I think it's better to alphabetically rank them, or at least rank them, whether it's by genre, release date or whatever. Let me know when you added most/all of my suggestions.
Erik M. - 17.09.2013 at 02:05
I have a few more albums for you to check out:
- Kamelot - Siége Perilous (seriously, this album is so underrated it's ridiculous... the low rating will scare people off, but in reality this album is just as good as most other Kamelot albums, albeit different)
- The Gathering - Always... (because it's the only death doom album in their discography (not sure about the 2nd album though) it doesn't appeal to most fans of the band, but it's a great album nonetheless and doesn't get the recognition it deserves)
- Tristania - Ashes (of course Widow's Weeds and Beyond the Veil are by far the most popular and praised albums of this band, but somehow Ashes is pretty underrated... don't get me wrong, it's not as great as the first two albums, but definitely better than people make it out to be)

Erik M. - 19.09.2013 at 19:46
Nice to see the list alphabetically ordened. In my opinion surely an improvement.

But just for the record: when an album has more than 100 votes as well as a rating equal or higher than an 8.0, it doesn't fit this list, right?

In that case, it means that some of my suggestions don't qualify for this list anymore. Still, the following albums still do qualify:
- Akelei - De Zwaarte van het Doorstane
- Paradise Lost - Lost Paradise (yes, I recommended Shades of God, but it doesn't fit this list since it has more than 100 votes and an 8.1 as rating)
- Summoning - Lugburz (yes, I recommened Minas Morgul, but it doesn't qualify either... and Lugburz is actually a very good pure black metal album, but has its low rating because most Summoning fans probably can't stand/don't like pure black metal )
- Vordven - Towards the Frozen Stream (it's safe to say this album does qualify seeing as it only has 5 votes and will NEVER reach 100 votes, at least not unless it suddenly gets popular)
- Kamelot - Siége Perilous (totally underrated as I already said, because it's different from the Kamelot that everyone knows, but a great album nonetheless)
- The Gathering - Always... (7,79 rating and I doubt it will reach the 7,95 rating)
- Tristania - Ashes (7,58 rating and also this won't reach a 7,95 rating)

Why not the others?

Aquilus labelled as "atmospheric doom"? Wtf, there's no doom in Aquilus at all. It's highly atmospheric, progressive and even has quite a bit of folk elements in it. For my lists I label Aquilus as "atmospheric progressive neoclassical folk". Plenty of neoclassical parts in it too.

True enough. Anyway, gave you a thumbs up because you added most of my suggestions (I think), but most importantly, you added Vordven, which is essential for this list in my opinion.

Stargazer is labeled avantgarde black metal/death metal here on MS. I don't care what it's called but I like it. Regarding The Ruins Of Beverast, Svartidaudi, Vreid, and Ancient Rites, just look at the number of votes or the average rating. I'm not saying that all the albums I've mentioned should be on this list. These are just my suggestions and Hex Omega should decide if he likes them or not. Maybe you should suggest some other albums and not just criticize other people's choices.

Actually I'm not a big fan of Beyond The Veil. Widow's Weeds is by far my favourite. Ashes sounds good, vocals are also nice, but songwriting is quite poor in my opinion. This album is nothing special... or maybe I need right mood for it.

As you have probably found out, this band features some members of Root and the lyrics follow the story which started on Root's album Kärgeräs. They released two albums so far and they are working on the third one called Death Mission at the moment.

Isn't it a little soon to call an album which has been released just one month ago underrated or overlook?

I guess you are talking about Dreadnought. This album was released in May, now we have (almost) October(5 months). Secondly it has only 30+ votes, so it is overlooked (less than 100 votes). And finally I really like that album, so I added it.

You are right and I made a mistake. For odd reasons I thought that album was released in early 2013 but I still think that it's too soon to call that album overlook. Moreover, how could it be overlooked while it was staff picked and rescinded a very positive front page review?
Now, I stop bitching. Would definitely check some of these albums featured on the list

'3. Only overlooked albums (less than 100 votes)' Overlooked within the meaning of my list.
