You guessed it. The best black metals from the land of garlic and cheese. Generally regarded as the Unholy Promised Land of the most colourless genre of metal, and for good reason.

I've probably missed quite a few bands off this list so some helpful reminders would be nice. I've only included one band from the LLN, because quite frankly I could only think of one band from that silly scene even half worthy of being mentioned on such a list.

I love Blut Aus Nord's 777 Cosmosophy, too bad It didn't make the list (pss it's not black metal)

Well I went for 1 album per band, and The Work.. is pretty much BaN's definitive one. And yeah, there's no black metal in Cosmosophy Purely industrial I would say. Great album though.
3rdWorld - 17.10.2013 at 23:33
That Reverence album is breathtaking.

That Reverence album is breathtaking.

And criminally overlooked by the general metal world I think. I'd swear it barely exists outside of MS.
Unhealer - 17.10.2013 at 23:41
Joe, you gotta get Stagnant Waters into MS somehow. You are the only one who can (?)
3rdWorld - 17.10.2013 at 23:50
I was going to a make a suggestion but seeing as what you posted here, I think I may have to agree with you as I remember not finding anything good about that release the time I checked it out.

Have no idea about their other records anyway.

Haha, yeah I did consider that for this list as a lot of people really dig it. If people start moaning at me about it I'll put it on here.

I'll have a listen. I nearly put Nuit Noire on here, but from a quick skim of their music they sounded less impressive than when I heard them a while back. Darkenhöld and possibly Borgia are possibilities (at least I think I've heard those).

My pleasure. I find it useful for myself to have this as a list too.

I'd throw in Diapsiquir and Regarde Les Hommes Tomber, other than that pretty solid picks!

Hesitant about Regarde Les Hommes Tomber. I guess I still think of them more as a blackened sludge band, rather than a sludgy black metal band. I may add it anyway though.

It's definitely debatable, but I guess you can say the same about Alkerdeel and Lord Mantis in that case. This track is pretty BM

If I find 8 more suitable bands I shall add that and Diapsiquir. Don't want uneven looking numbers
Erik M. - 19.10.2013 at 21:17
Damn, this list is impressive. +1

Don't even have suggestions for you as everything that I can think of is already on the list. I think you pretty much covered the whole of French BM. And although I haven't heard Le Secret, I would have Alcest's debut on here but that's just me. Btw, now that I'm here anyway, you might take a look at my most recent list as many of those albums seem favourites of yours. Just added some albums to it and I'm pretty much out of suggestions, but I'm sure you'll have some suggestions for me.

I shall have a look through at some point soon

Problem with Souvenirs D'un Autre Monde is that it's almost completely devoid of black metal. Just a few vocals here and there if I remember right. It's a great album, but I do prefer the original version of the debut EP (over the inferior remix of it).

Okay then. And damn, I forgot about the lack of BM in the debut just now, haha. So yeah, it definitely makes sense not having it on here in that case, despite the fact that I like it way more than the 2nd album (which many people seem to prefer out of all Alcest's albums, but it doesn't appeal to me as much as the debut even though it's more BM).

I'm not really keen anything after the debut album myself. Love the first two records, but then I don't think Alcest really offered much else for the world.

Pretty sure they are. The CNK - Industrial Symphonic black, Herrschaft - cyber/electro black.

But CNK is black.

I checked out 5 tracks on youtube and all I heard was industrial metal with some screamy vocals and some symphonic elements. Nothing that sounded like anything on this list. Even their black metal covers sound nothing like black metal (Impaled Nazarene cover for example).
